QUESTION OF THE WEEK

How will I stop acting like a self-appointed judge of “latecomers” and begin serving as a member of God’s “welcome wagon”? After all, God has welcomed even me.

CALL UPON THE LORD The very first line of today's first reading summons us to seek the Lord and to call upon God. This sentiment is echoed in the refrain for today's responsorial psalm: "The Lord is near to all who call upon him" (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of someone who constantly sought the Lord. In the excerpt we read today from his letter to the Philippians, we find Saint Paul toward the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant with Christ. He writes, "For to me life is Christ" (Philippians 1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord with Christ we need look no further than today's Gospel. There we find that God's love and mercy are immeasurable for all those who seek and call upon the Lord. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

WEDDING BANNS

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Today’s gospel contrasts equality with generosity. Often, we think our worth is measured in what we are paid. But this is false—our true worth is not measured by money or possessions. God is generous to us all. Fairness is an important family value. However, families function better by first promoting generosity and gratitude rather than feeding envy by promoting equality and a preoccupation with keeping score.

FROM THE PASTOR

Thanks to all who are participating in the Parish Gathering this Sunday. Please read the following reflection I wrote as a foundation for who we are called to be and what we are called to do as a parish.

The parish does not exist for itself, but for the Mission of Christ. The parish is an intentional community charged with growing in faith, sharing faith, and transforming the world through faith. Vital parishes are mission driven. Gathering at the Lord’s Table on the Lord’s Day forms us into the Body of Christ and compels us outward as his ambassadors of compassion, mercy, reconciliation, and justice for every human being, from conception until natural death. It is from this table of gratitude that we go out to share all that we are and all that we have with others. It is in the midst of the parish that the Gospel is proclaimed, liturgy offered, and the sacraments celebrated. It is in the company of fellow Catholic Christians that we discern and live out our daily life vocation. It is in the midst of the parish that the beginning and end of our earthly life is celebrated. Jesus calls us to a living faith and to becoming a vibrant faith community reaching out to an often wounded and fearful human family.

October is “AWARENESS MONTH” in Catholic Charities’ Heroin/Opioid Awareness Campaign When addiction dominates a family, knowing where to seek help can seem elusive. This Fall awareness campaign’s monthly focus features bulletin blurbs and social media posts on how to break the silence, raise awareness of where to turn for help, and how communities can decrease opioid availability. Look for Catholic Charities supported panel forums near your parish in October. For information on raising aware-ness of how we can all have an impact, visit the Catholic Charities “Hope and Healing Beyond Heroin” page at www.ccdocle.org or the Greater Than Heroin initiative at www.greatherthanheroin.com.

SECOND COLLECTION TODAY Today, we are taking up the collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Your support helps the CCC

connect people to Christ, here and around the world, through the internet, television, radio, and print media. Half of the funds we collect remains in our diocese to support local efforts. Be a part of this campaign to spread the gospel message and support the collection today! To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/ccc.
