Vincentians and volunteers at all levels can participate in our works. They can participate with other Vincentians in home visits, pantry work, serving in our Diocesan programs and/or other works of the Conference. Once a new member has obtained a basic knowledge of the Society, has discerned their call to our vocation, and is comfortable in participating in the life and works of their Conference, they should be encouraged to attend OFE classes. Our Formation Policy was designed to enhance membership, not to be a barrier to it. New members need to feel valued, supported, and encouraged to grow in their Vincentian vocation by completing the OFE requirements; but, no one should ever feel they have to leave the Society if a course is not readily available to them.

“It is for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give them.” St. Vincent de Paul

Beyond The Ozanam Formation Experience

By Shirley Smalley President, St. Bernadette Conference

It is essential that the Society continually promote the formation and training of its members and Officers, in order to deepen their knowledge of the Society and their spirituality, improve the sensitivity, quality and efficiency of their service to the poor ... (Rule: Part I: Article 3.12)

Between the years 2000 and 2002, the Phoenix SVdP Diocesan Council embarked upon the task of creating a formalized, consistent, and mandatory training program for all full members of the Society. In March of 2003, the General Membership approved the Formation Policy that created our Ozanam Formation Experience (OFE) program. Easter Message

Easter is a celebration of life and an occasion of consummate joy which focuses our thoughts on our Redeemer’s almost unimaginable love for us. This sacred season has special significance for Vincentians because our Society’s inherently redemptive mission brings an inner peace and joy to our lives which I believe is one of the most meaningful aspects of being a Vincentian. Pope Francis noted that “Holy Week is a time of grace which the Lord gives to us to open the doors of our hearts, our lives…and to step outside toward others, to draw close to them so we can bring the light and joy of our faith. Always step outside yourself! And do this with the love and tenderness of God, with respect and patience, with our hands, our feet, our hearts…” His exhortation brings to mind my favorite quote of Blessed Frederic Ozanam: “The poor have brought me out of myself. That is why I love them so.” As was true with Frederic, we are afforded life-transforming opportunities to offer a loving, caring response to the needs of God’s children. Jesus called us to follow Him in joyfully serving His poor. He provided the perfect example of a gift of self by His birth in a stable and death on a cross. It seems to me that giving ourselves to the service of others is precisely the role God wants us to play in His plan for our lives. Our Vincentian vocation is a precious gift from God guiding us to relate to each other as Christ did in His servanthood and humility. We have been blessed with a new way of seeing the suffering of others because of our common cause with Christ’s own ministry of love and compassion. One of the great privileges of our calling is to participate directly in the uplifting process of extending our Creator’s love to our brothers and sisters in His universal family. Together with 800,000 Vincentians in nearly 150 countries we bring to life our founder’s magnificent vision of a global network of charity. It is a gift beyond measure to be part of such a noble endeavor which spreads Christ’s boundless, unconditional love so far and wide and touches so many lives. In celebrating the Resurrection, Christ’s ultimate miracle which changed everything for everyone forever, let us pray that we will always be responsible stewards of God’s life and love within us as we “step outside” ourselves to serve Him. Let us be grateful for His grace which makes our actions fruitful and fulfilling in a way that transcends the flawed values of this world. And let us rejoice in the blessings we receive from those who make Him known to us as we care for them in His name. By Joe Riley

Jubilarians Honored At

Sacred Heart Prescott Thrift Store #804

Society of St. Vincent de Paul March 2018

The Sacred Heart Prescott Thrift Store held it’s annual Christmas Party in December. At the event the six very special people were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for 21 years each of dedicated volunteer service at the Sacred Heart Prescott Thrift Store. We wish to thank these conscientious volunteers who have been very instrumental in keeping our store running smoothly and providing a steady stream of income for our Conference.

Shirley Diemer volunteers pricing shoes received, Joe Oliver tests electronics donated, and Kay Monagle and Agnes Mason run the cash register and greet customers as they come into the store. Jennie Garcia prices linens and helps with store displays while Paul Diemer tests electrical appliances and fixes donated cuckoo clocks.

The recipients are from left to right: Shirley Diemer, Joe Oliver, Kay Monagle, Agnes Nason, Jennie Garcia, and Paul Diemer.

This is a story about a homeless woman, Marie, who found permanent housing last year with the help of some Vincentians from St Bridget’s Conference. Our Conference met Marie and her boyfriend 5 yrs ago living in an abandoned fruit stand. The couple was allowed to live there in exchange for keeping the weeds and grass cut for the property owner. The structure had no electricity, gas or running water. A garden hose, camp stove and solar lights gave them the ability to cook, and the structure provided some shelter from the weather. Our Vincentians grew fond of the couple who would ask for a food box once a month. When the owner sold the property, a few

Vincentians put in extra hours to find them a new place to stay. Due to Marie’s age, physical and mental challenges, and no income, they were able to find her permanent housing at New Leaf’s La Mesita Apartments. This community provided her with not only a one bedroom furnished apartment, but support services to help Marie become self-sufficient. Marie is now working with a counselor who says Marie is one of her success stories. After being homeless for 5 years, she is back on her meds and now paying rent for the first time in many years. Marie pays for rent with her disability income that her counselor helped her obtain. She also has transportation to her doctors. One other note, Marie’s boyfriend is a regular visitor at her new apartment. A pair of Vincentians recently checked in with Marie. Her apartment was warm and homey, filled with all sorts of items that Marie created. Turns out she is very crafty! Her boyfriend was there too. When asked if they could write her story, she agreed along with a photo taken of the 2 of them with her cat, Buddy.

A New Life. Renewed Hope...

Volunteers Honored at Lake Havasu Conference

On February 19th, 2018 Our Lady of the Lake Conference St. Vincent de Paul in Lake Havasu held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. In total we awarded 25 volunteers with years served pins. We awarded one long time employee, John Bingle with 15 years of service as well as Cindy and Jerry Smith with 20 years of service. Two of our young Vincentians, Alexa and Ashleigh Alba, helped us release balloons to long time Employee/Volunteer Doris Vore who served 25 years with the Society but passed away in January 2018. We are so thankful for the hearts and hands that help us help others and allow for us to help those in need.

In 2013, Bertha and her 13-year-old daughter, Atheliah, were driving along the road one

cold day and Atheliah spotted a homeless man who was cold. Atheliah asked her

mother if they could help the homeless man. Bertha and Atheliah knew they had to do

something and began a door-to-door campaign collecting blankets for the homeless.

This project grew each year, and donations of blankets and/or money for new blankets

were solicited. Over 700 blankets have been collected or purchased and donated to St

Vincent de Paul since the project started. In December, 2017, 400 blankets were

collected and donated to St. Vincent de Paul at Holy Cross. We normally think only

adults solve problems, but the Lord works through young people as well. We are grateful

for both of them. Are you an angel?

Words of Inspiration From Our Founder Bl. Frederic Ozanam

Pardon me if I have waited so long a time to fulfill a most pleasant duty, that of congratulating you on your charitable efforts to establish in the town of Aix a little colony of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Your letter, communicated to our brothers in Paris, has moved their piety in a lively way; they have asked me to tell you how much the establishing of this new house of faith and love in the middle of religious Provence interests them…soon all towns that gather a studious youth around certain chairs will also have a conference to gather together Christian youth. “Life in Letters,” September 3, 1839

Words of Inspiration From Our Patron St. Vincent de Paul

The means of obtaining this indifference from God is constant mortification; both interior and exterior. I will give you no other means. In the first place, let us reflect in order to discover whether we have an inclination to one thing rather than to another, and what are the objects which attract us most, in order to be on guard against them, to labor incessantly at separating ourselves from them, to root out from our heart all these inclinations, to disengage ourselves from all creatures, and to mortify our passions and senses at all times and in all places.

“On indifference,” May 16, 1659

On Saturday, April 14th, we will need our Vincentian brothers and sisters to come out and

help the stores gather NEW volunteers. This is a biyearly event, which depends on all of us to take part. While the stores are a part of our Mission, their main responsibility is to make money for the Society’s programs to aid those we serve. They cannot do this alone; their main responsibility is to deal with customers. To do this, they require much support from us. This means willing hands and smiles. “Have you worked or shopped in our Thrift Stores? Have you noticed how welcoming the is? This is due, not only to staff, but to those unsung volunteers in the background. Why not be a part of this?” Good questions to ask while you sign people up! Blessed Fredrick went out to the poor in all situations. If you are unable to do Home Visits, please consider volunteering in your District’s store. There are many different tasks to be handled, and willing voices to instruct you. You can begin your journey by working the tables on the 14

th.

District Presidents will be receiving information on the Sign Up in mid-March. Let them know that you are anxious to serve that day. It can be a rewarding experience. On behalf of the Committee, thank you for your support. Peace, Joann Prendergast Serve Our Stores Committee Chair

This year, we are again going to give Conferences the opportunity to participate in a Summer Food Drive. At the Saturday, March 17

th Quarterly Meeting in the Hall of Banners at 420 W.

Watkins St. in Phoenix, we will have Food Drive supplies for all who wish to participate. After the Quarterly Program, Conferences and churches may pick up the free supplies which they have ordered for conducting their local food drives. These include grocery bags, holy cards, envelopes, and flyers suggesting appropriate types of food for donation by parishioners. Typically, these materials will be stapled together, distributed to parishioners one weekend, and returned with donations the following weekend. The MEN of OUR LADY of PERPETUAL HELP (Scottsdale) will be available to assist at the Quarterly Meeting. Lucy Meraz (602-850-6761) will be sending out further information asking Conference Presidents to sign up. If you need food supplies for the summer, please consider participating. “Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and passed them out to the people. Afterwards He did the same with the fish. And everyone ate until full!” (John 6:11)

For those who know Lora Trujillo, it was a “no-brainer” that the full-time volunteer who dedicates her time to the Poore Medical Clinic and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul deserved the honor of 2017 Arizona Daily Sun Citizen of the Year. For Trujillo, accepting the honor meant being rewarded for something she feels gives her so many rewards already, and being singled out when she feels that many people at the organizations deserve the same honor.

Trujillo divides her time between the clinic, where she is the front office coordinator and does the intake process and eligibility screening for new patients, and the traveler’s aid department of St. Vincent de Paul, where she and other volunteers help stranded travelers with money for gas, car repairs and other travel related expenses to help them get home. Trujillo previously served as the President and Vice President of Flagstaff’s St. Vincent de Paul Conference. “I grew up with parents who were very much volunteer-minded,” Trujillo said. “My family values volunteer work and the commitment that it takes, even as much as a paying job.” Trujillo is trained as a nurse but has not been a practicing nurse since she moved to Flagstaff, about 18 years ago. However, she said her training and background as a nurse helps her at the clinic when doing intake and processing for patients. “It’s nice to be in a position to help somebody in a difficult spot,” she said. Renee DeVere, one of several people who nominated Trujillo for the award, said she nominated her because “I see someone being so selfless of their time, and it’s a thread in everything she does.” DeVere said Trujillo always considers how much she can help others, even in simple instances, like buying gifts that also benefit a cause, so more people gain from her purchase than just the recipient of the gift. “She tries to drive home how much you receive when you volunteer,” DeVere said of Trujillo, who encourages her children to volunteer their time. But Trujillo is quick to deflect the spotlight onto other people in the organizations where she works, who she said are equally deserving of the honor.

“I get to do what I get to do because of other people,” she said. DeVere said Trujillo is “very much under the radar” about her volunteer work, and gets her joy from giving back to the community. “Her heart wells up when she helps others,” DeVere said. Trujillo has been involved with St. Vincent de Paul for about 18 years, and got involved with the clinic when Bill and Barbara Packard, who were also involved with St. Vincent de Paul, helped start the Poore Clinic with Henry and Nina Poore. “It just grew,” Trujillo said of her volunteer work. Flagstaff has diverse opportunities for volunteering, with several organizations available for those who are interested in trying volunteer work, she said. “It starts small,” she said. “You hear about something that you might want to try.” Volunteering at the various organizations lets her meet interesting people and be around people who like to help the community. “It’s inspiring,” Trujillo said. People who find themselves in unfortunate situations are really no different than anyone else, she said. “People aren’t very different,” she said. “When you have support, family support is a huge buffer from situations people find themselves in who don’t have that support. When you sit down with someone, listening is very important. You can learn a lot from it. We all have a lot to teach each other.”

Encounters in Cuernavaca By Steve Jenkins

St. Gregory’s Conference

Society of St. Vincent de Paul March 2018

On Tuesday, the 19th of September 2017 there was an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 near Puebla,Mexico – approximately 140km south-east of Mexico City. The earthquake affected many areas in the adjoining State of Morelos in and east of Cuernavaca. Within 10 hours, St Vincent de Paul in Cuernavaca was collecting food, blankets, and other items for the people affected by this disaster. On the days following, St. Vincent de Paul provided food boxes and clothing to many affected families and began Phase II work of locating families in areas most affected. In the following weeks and months, the Society provided much needed assistance to the areas, using donations from local families and businesses, the Phoenix Diocesan Council, and from the National Council of the United States (through the National Council of Mexico). The Vincentians in Cuernavaca partnered with Corazonespor Mexico (Hearts for Mexico), a non-profit organization, to build houses for four families in Hueyapan, a remote area east of Cuernavaca in the state of Morelos near the epicenter of the earthquake. SVDP also assisted earthquake victims in Jojutla, a large city closer to Cuernavaca. There, the center of the city almost completely leveled. In cooperation with local civic leaders, the Society provided mini-grants to families with small businesses to purchase equipment to resume working. On January 4, 2018, a team of four Vincentians and two guests traveled to Cuernavaca for a nine day visit to the SVDP Council and Conferences. They visited students and their families and assisted the local members in their normal activities. However, on this trip, on January 11, the team toured the areas affected by the September 2017 earthquake in the State of Morelos and met with families that were assisted by St Vincent de Paul.

The team: from Phoenix: Steve Jenkins (St Gregory); Dora Pitchford (Our Lady of the Valley), Dora's sisters Estella and Lenora, Dan Crowley (Our Lady of Perpetual Help - Scottsdale), Marc Neibergal (SVDP volunteer), From SVDP Cuernavaca: Elia Herrera, Gladys Herrera (President), Sr. Lourdes Gareazzi, Nora de Ochoa, and Gina Ocampo (Executive Director). Maria of the Ladies of Charity in Mexico.

When the team arrived in Hueyapan, many families and businesses were rebuilding hous-es and businesses. In the following photo, notice the walls of the building being constructed on the side and rear of the cleared property. And, as in the photo of the bell tower of the local Catholic church, many of the churches were damaged.

The first family that was visited was a young man, his wife, and their son, whose house had been destroyed. The father earns a living harvesting avocadoes from trees in the area; and they also have goats, chickens, and a cow. Located on the fault line, their adobe house collapsed during the quake. It has now been replaced through grants from St. Vincent de Paul and Corazonespor Mexico. The couple is standing on the slab of their home being built in the photo. A month later, they are standing at the entrance to their new home. Before After

Later that day, our team visited another area of Hueyapan, where SVDP and Corazonespor Mexico were assisting two other families with houses. These houses are constructed with block walls and cement roof and complete with electrical wiring and plumbing. A water tank is placed on the roof and a solar kit is installed to heat the water.

On Friday, January 12, we visited Jojutla, a city where the center of town was leveled by the earthquake. Since Jojutla is a fairly large industrial and commercial city, the Fed-eral and State governments, Red Cross and other agencies provided emergency ser-vices immediately after the earthquake and follow-up assistance to rebuild business and housing properties in the community. Tents were provided to families, and secure areas with access to facilities are in place until houses and businesses are rebuilt.

In Jujutla, St. Vincent de Paul, in partnership with community leaders, assisted many small business owners with micro-grants to resume business activities. For example, funds were provided to the couples in the photos below to purchase gas stove, gas tank, table, and equipment necessary to cook and sell tamales in one case and pozole in the other. The cost for each grant was about $250.00 ($US). St. Vincent de Paul has provided the means for many small business owners in Jojutla who lost everything to regain an income and return to normal life..

The response of the Society to the earthquake in September began with immediate emergency assistance using locally donated resources of food, clothing and some financial assistance. Donations from the Phoenix Council, St. Clement of Rome, and others in the Phoenix area were sent to the Council in Cuernavaca within weeks. The Council of the United States also solicited donations and sent them to the National Council of Mexico. In Cuernavaca, the Vincentians and their volunteers are continuing to work with local non-profits and community leaders to provide assistance to families and small businesses that will need help to return to a normal life. The Vincentians who traveled to Cuernavaca and worked with the members can testify to the wonderful response of our St. Vincent de Paul Society to this crisis. After many years, the Society has developed programs and attracted many volunteers to be able to significantly assist families in surrounding communities with resources to recover their lives.

On December 21, 2017, Christmas came early for more than 1300 elementary students from Palomino Primary School as they went on a shopping spree at the North Phoenix St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. The Thrift Store was transformed into “Santa’s Workshop” for one day just for the students. During this shopping spree, Students were able to experience the spirit of giving as they shopped for Christmas presents for their parents and siblings. Many Volunteer shoppers helped student pick out the perfect gift and student even got the chance to meet Santa. Thank you to all who made this another successful holiday event.

Palomino Project

Thanks to all who made this a success!

Requiescat In Pace

May the Angels lead them into Paradise, may the martyrs receive them at their coming and lead them into Jerusalem, the Holy City.

May the Choir of Angels welcome them and, with Lazarus, who was also poor,

may they have everlasting rest.
