THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER April 30, 2017

You have made known to me the paths of life;

you will fill me with joy in your presence.

-- Acts 2:28

ON THE ROAD One central metaphor employed to describe the Christian life is a journey. In today's second reading, Peter addresses the early Christian community: "Conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning" (1 Peter 1:17). When we think of a journey, we normally think of some kind of movement from point A to point B. The Christian journey, begun in the waters of baptism (point A) has as its ultimate destination eternal life with God in heaven (point B). Unfortunately we find ourselves on all kinds of detours along the way. Because of sin, we make foolish turns and sometimes seem unable to detect the presence of the Lord. Today's story of the two disciples on their way to Emmaus illustrates for us the fact that, even when we are dejected or on one of our many detours, the Lord is there, walking right beside us.

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners, The first step toward discerning (selecting) new members of our Parish Pastoral Council will take place next weekend, May 6-7, at all Masses. You will have the opportunity to put forth in writing the names of individuals you believe would be good candidates for this

leadership ministry. (You can also suggest yourself.) Please consider the following qualities as criteria for Council members: ♦ being a fully initiated Catholic, experiencing the

Lord as someone real and influential in her or his life

♦ actively participating in Sunday Eucharist ♦ motivated by the desire for spiritual growth in

oneself and others ♦ optimistic and enthusiastic about the future of the

parish ♦ desirous of working within a model of shared

leadership, i.e., one based not on power, but on collaboration and consensus

♦ capable of careful listening to others’ ideas, of articulating their own ideas, and of practicing the art of building consensus

♦ eager about facilitating parish efforts to identify its mission and goals

♦ open to inviting, delegating, and encouraging parishioners to bring the parish plan to fruition

♦ committed to devoting the time and energy required of the yearly cycle of planning efforts

All those identified as potential Councilors will be invited to attend an information night on Thursday, May 11. At this session attendees will learn about the role of the Parish Pastoral Council. After this evening, all will be asked to reflect and pray on this information and discern whether they feel called to this ministry of service and leadership. The following week on Wednesday, May 17, a prayerful discernment night will be held. The new pastoral council members will be presented and blessed by the community at the weekend Masses on June 3-4. May the Spirit that is Holy be a source of our guidance and inspiration, Father Norm

DISCIPLES FOR THE DYING The First Friday Mass will be at St. Sebastian on May 5 at 5 p.m.

The schedule is as follows: St. Bernard - June 2 - 12:10 p.m. St. Vincent - July 7 - 6:30 a.m. All Are Welcome!

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES

Too many families take too little time to talk about their faith. Try an Emmaus family journey. Talk about Jesus and your faith on the ride to church. Or, make time this week to meet with a trusted friend with whom you can talk and pray and even share a meal. Where two or more are gathered in His Name, Jesus is present in their midst.

PARISH PLANNING MEETING

The two parish committees which have been focusing on parish adult faith formation/spiritual development and on parish outreach will have a joint meeting this Tuesday, May 2, at 7 p.m., in the Scullen Room.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWLY BAPTIZED!

Welcome to the St. Vincent Parish Community HARLYN S H A Y N O R D B E R G ,

or 3 for $5 and bouquets at $10 each will be sold after all Masses. Please say “Thank you for the gift of life!” to wives, moms, grandmas, godmothers, and loving friends with beautiful flowers and support Right to Life of Northeast Ohio’s continuing efforts to promote the dignity of all human life from conception to natural death.

PRAYER AND SCRIPTURE STUDY TEAM

St. Vincent has a Prayer and Scripture Study Team. We meet on the first and third Mondays (May 1 and May 15) in the Scullen Room at 7 p.m. for the Scriptural Rosary and Bible Study. All are welcome!

" Saying the Hail Mary and the Rosary: Those who accept this devotion should have a great love for the Hail Mary, or, as it is called, the Angelic Salutation. Few Christians, however enlightened, understand the value, merit, excellence and necessity of the Hail Mary. Our Blessed Lady herself had to appear to men of great holiness and insight (St. Dominic) … to convince them of the richness of this prayer. " Passage from The Secret of the Rosary St Louis de Montfort

Grief is a normal and natural reaction upon the death of a loved one. It can begin a journey that we did not choose to take but, when shared with others, can often help us heal and grow. STREET EVANGELIZATION TRAINING Ever wanted to share your Catholic faith with others, but didn’t know how to get the conversation started? Come learn how! St. Paul Street Evangelization provides a non-confrontational avenue for you to share Jesus Christ and the truth and beauty of the Catholic Faith with a hungry culture. We have developed a practical method for breaking the ice and asking some simple questions to quickly determine where a person is in their faith journey. This method provides you with a road map of how the conversation will go and how

to plant seeds by sharing your own personal experiences to help the person move to the next step. Basic Evangelization Training will be held from 9am to 5pm at St. Francis de Sales

Parish on May 13, 2017. Space is limited. Sign up today! Register at www.streetevangelization.com and click our link under Upcoming Workshops or scan this QR code. Registration ends May 6th. For more information call Mike Powers, 330-618-7688, or email him at [email protected].
