The Fellowship ClubThe Fellowship Club began as the Couples Club in 1936. The group has sponsored missionaries, gathered toys for children in the hospital, and regularly met for potluck meals, Bible study, and fellowship. The Fellowship Club has decided that it is time to conclude. We rejoice in all the good that this group was able to achieve through the years. And although the Fellowship Club has run its course, may their work inspire new ideas for service and fellowship in our congregation.

Fifteen MinutesFifteen minutes—that is about how much time I get with you

on Sunday morning in the sermon. Maybe it seems like a long time—like I am straining your attention span. But to me, it is neverenough.

Sometimes I make the goodhearted mistake of trying to squash as much into the sermon as possible because I know my time is limited. The good news is that you need not be limited to fifteen minutes hearing the word of God each week.

I am a strong advocate of daily Bible reading. And if this is not your practice, let me encourage you to begin. A good study Bible will help. I recommend The Lutheran Study Bible available through Concordia Publishing House. We can order one for you in the Office.

I have become a fan of podcasts, especially long form podcasts. An interview on the evening news lasts thirty seconds. A sermon lasts fifteen minutes. But there are important discussions that require more time and thought. And podcasts allow you to do something else while you listen—exercise, cook, clean, drive, garden, or even shovel snow.

Now, don’t just google religious podcasts. Much of what you will find out there is false teaching. Let me recommend a few podcasts for you to try. And these should be available on most podcast platforms or have websites or smartphone apps where you can listen: Issues Etc.

Core Christianity.KFUO Radio.Just and Sinner Podcast.Lutheran Hour Ministries.

There is this great story in Acts 20 where Paul talks with the Church in Troas and the conversation takes a while. “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight.” And although the story ends with a tragedy and a miracle, it shows you the importance of long fruitful conversations.

We need to talk and think about real issues. We need to be ready to give an answer for the hope that lies within us. 15 minutes on Sunday morning just isn’t enough. Daily Bible reading and podcasts might help. His Blessings, Pastor

AdventDuring the Advent and Christmas season this year, the Board of Elders and Planning Council have decided to offer Holy Communion at all our Sunday Worship Services. We think this is a great time to offer the Sacrament of the Altar at every opportunity we can. Think on one of the hymns in our hymnal, ‘I Come, O Savior, to Thy Table’ (LSB 618). The hymn’s first stanza and refrain say so much as to why we need the body and blood of our Lord.

I come, O Savior, to Thy table,

For weak and weary are my soul.

Thou, Bread of Life, alone are able,

To satisfy and make me whole.

Lord, may Thy Body and the Blood,

Be for my soul, the highest good.In the Advent season, we are preparing our hearts, souls, and minds for the celebration of the Incarnation of our Lord at Christmas. We plead for forgiveness to come to us, in Christ, the Babe of Bethlehem, but also the Christ of the cross and empty tomb. We hear the Word coming to us from God the Father, and know his reason for coming was to save us from sin by His true body and blood.

How many times have you ever watched a movie or a play or sporting event, and something happened and you had to leave for a bit and came back and felt like you missed something in it? Something major happened and you did not get to see it or take part in it? How about at a meal, you had the salad, the beverage, the vegetable, the dessert, but forgot the main entrée or meat? You feel as if you have missed something. The same is true with not having the Lord’s Supper. We are missing what God gives us, thru His Son’s Body and Blood. We have Confession and Absolution, we pray, we hear the Word, we sing, we are preached the Word but we are not getting fully filled up, for we are missing the Body and Blood, given and shed for us for the remission of sins. We need the full substance of God’s gifts given to us.

In this Advent season, join us around Word and Sacrament every Sunday. Partake of the good Gifts given to us by the Father, through His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Let it strengthen and preserve you till life everlasting! Amen. Kurt Flathers

Clinton Lutheran Hour Radio Broadcast

Our Mission Festival project for this year! The Clinton Lutheran Hour has been coming into our homes, through KROS Radio

broadcasts, since 1950. For those who are shut-ins or who are unable to come to church, this is a wonderful way to hear God’s word, through Pastor Pool, and be a part of the worship service.

The Radio Mission League sponsors these broadcasts each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. on KROS 1340 AM or 105.9 FM. Donations made from St. John congregation make this possible.

Would you like to assure the continuance of these broadcasts with a donation? A broadcast may be sponsored for a specific Sunday for $35.00 by contacting Janice Wheelock, 321-4536.

Darlene Paysen records our services each week, Jeff Niebuhr is our announcer, Janice Wheelock schedules the broadcasts, and Sharon Brown is the treasurer.

We’re Celebrating Fall in the Preschool ClassroomWe are learning about Moses and his calling to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. We will learn about the plagues, how God provided manna in the desert, gave the Israelites commandments to follow and then lead them to the Promised Land. We sing, Pray and practice scripture. Our focus, as always, is God’s amazing love for us.

Pumpkins are next as we read about the life cycle of a pumpkin, and then weigh, measure, and experiment with real pumpkins. We will also talk about Monsters and all the feelings we feel inside. Along with these themes we continue to build a variety of structures with blocks and tracks, explore light and shadows, and create artistic masterpieces as we enjoy painting, gluing and cutting, playing in the kitchen with our babies and food, and building social skills with our many new friends.
