Mission Statement

“Promoting academic excellence and fostering spiritual growth through a college-preparatory curriculum in a Christian environment”

Statement of FaithThough St. John’s Christian Academy does not ascribe to any one church or denomination, we believe these basic tenets unite all Christians:

We believe that there is one infinite, holy, loving and personal God, eternally existing in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and that He speaks to us in scripture and reveals Himself to us in creation, salvation, and renewal. As finite human beings created in God’s image, it is our purpose and privilege to worship, honor, serve, and obey Him.

We believe that the world belongs to God, who created it and faithfully sustains it by His providence, mercy, and grace.

We believe that the Bible is God’s written revelation to man, and that it is divinely inspired, authoritative, and without error in the original manuscripts.

We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, sinless life, the miracles He performed, His death on the cross to provide for our redemption, bodily resurrection, and His ascension into Heaven.

We believe in the personality and deity of the Holy Spirit, that He convicts us of our sinfulness, performs the miracle of the new birth in unbelievers, and dwells within the believer, enabling us to live godly lives.

We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin, was alienated from God. Only through faith, trusting in Christ alone for salvation which was made possible by His death and resurrection, can that alienation be removed.

We believe that God, in His own time and in His own way, will bring the world to its appropriate end. According to His promise, Jesus Christ will personally and visibly return in glory to judge the living and the dead in righteousness.

We believe that God creates each individual as male or female, and these genders reflect the image of God and complement one another.

Morning Duty, Break Duty, Lunch Duty, Dismissal Duty and Detention Hall. The schedules and responsibilities will distributed during the first faculty meeting of each year.

Morning DutyMorning duty begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends when the first bell rings at 7:45 a.m. The primary focus of morning duty is safety. Lower school students should stand on the sidewalk and grassy area on the East side of the building. Running and playing are not allowed. In the case of inclement weather, morning duty will be held in the cafeteria. Again, running and playing are not allowed. Students are not allowed to enter the building before the bell rings. When the bell rings, K-3 students will proceed into the building first, followed by each higher grade in order.

Upper school students should be outside behind the high school hallway. In inclement weather, students will be allowed to sit in the hallway next to their classroom. No students should be inside the building until the bell rings, except in the case of inclement weather. Mr. Reeves will monitor upper school students.

Break DutyThe teacher on duty should report to the lunchroom at the beginning of the break period. The teacher is responsible for keeping students under control and should watch students inside and outside until the end of the break.

Lunch DutyAll teachers in grades K-5th grade should eat with their students. Teachers should insure the tables are clean before the students leave the lunchroom. Teachers are responsible for keeping students under control and should remain with their students until the end of lunch.

Students in grades 6-11 eat lunch during two different periods. The teacher on duty should report to the lunchroom at the beginning of the lunch period and remain with the students until lunch ends. When the students have finished eating, they may go outside. The on-duty teacher should check the tables to make sure they are clean before the students assigned clean-up duty are allowed to leave the lunchroom. Be alert and watch for missing students. Students may try to leave for lunch. ONLY SENIORS ARE ALLOWED TO LEAVE FOR LUNCH AFTER SIGNING OUT IN THE FRONT OFFICE. No lower class student may accompany a senior off-campus for lunch. Students may not be in the locker rooms or behind the curtains on the stage. Try to keep the majority of students together. Place yourself so that you can monitor all students or periodically walk from place to place. Students should not be in the building during lunch unless they are making up a test or serving detention. They may do research in the Library with consent. If the above privileges are abused, the alternative for all students will be to sit in the lunchroom the entire lunch period.

Remember that there is a classroom adjoining the lunchroom and noise should be kept at an appropriate level.

DismissalAll lower school teachers should take their students to the East side of the building and keep them in lines until they are picked up. Running and playing are not allowed. At 3:00 p.m. all remaining students will be left with the teacher on duty and escorted to Extended Care. Teachers should watch for unfamiliar faces. Do not allow children to run across the parking lot to meet their parents. Students should not be on the playground or in the building.

DetentionThis duty refers to detentions given by the administration. Detentions are not meant to be pleasant experiences. Detention begins at 3:05 p.m. Students will be told to report to the administrator on duty. The administrator should remain with the students throughout detention. They cannot have visitors. They must do the work assigned. If the detention given is one hour, the student must stay one hour. Students who do not report for detention should be reported to the administration as soon as possible.

Extended CareStudents who generally go to Extended Care or who know they will be going on a particular day should be escorted to the room immediately after dismissal. Only those students whose parents are unavoidably late will be supervised until 3:00 p.m. They should then be turned over to Extended Care.

Note: The upper school teacher on duty should monitor the parking lot to insure a safe exit of all driving students. The teacher should monitor the activity in the parking lot and be aware of non-SJCA students. They should not be on the property. All students should be out of the building shortly after dismissal with the exception of those serving detention or working on extra-curricular projects with a teacher. Students may not be in the Computer Lab unattended. Students may not be in the Library unattended. All students in grades 9-12 who are not involved in an extra-curricular activity should leave campus. Students are not allowed to leave campus during regular school hours or during Extended Care. favors, verbal or written communications, gestures or physical contacts of a sexual nature unsolicited and/or unwelcome will be considered sexual harassment.

Inappropriate Behavior Prohibited of All SJCA Staff, Employees and Board MembersNo administrator/supervisor or any other employee of SJCA will create a sexually hostile offensive work environment for any other employee by engaging in any sexual harassment.

No administrator/supervisor or any other employee of SJCA will assist any individual doing any act which constitutes sexual harassment against any other employee.

Any employee who feels that he/she has been the object of sexual harassment is encouraged to file a complaint with the Headmaster (except for situations covered in the following paragraph).

Under no circumstances will an employee be required to first report allegations of harassment to an administrator/supervisor if that person is the individual who is accused of the harassment. In such cases, the employee will contact the Chairman of the Board of SJCA.

No employee will take any action to discourage any other employee from reporting alleged sexual harassment.

Retaliation in any way against an employee who has provided information as a witness to alleged sexual harassment will not be tolerated.

HeadmasterThe Headmaster is available to anyone in the SJCA community. An appointment is suggested.

Leave & AbsenceEach staff member working full time (30 hours or more a week) is granted eight days of sick/personal leave per contract year. Each staff member working part-time (less than 30 hours a week) is granted four days of sick/personal leave per contract year. All Personal days taken must be approved by the Headmaster in advance of the leave.

Faculty & Staff Handbook Page 32 of 51

Page 33: ST€¦  · Web viewSt. John's Christian Academy (SJCA) is a college preparatory school organized within the framework of academic procedure and tradition. With the conviction that

The Headmaster must approve the use of more than eight days sick leave. Special permission for absences of more than twenty days may be granted by the Board of Directors. For leave and absence beyond these limits, one day's pay will be deducted for each day absent. Excessive absences may be grounds for dismissal. A leave statement with the official record of attendance will be furnished upon request.

Maternity Leave Maternity Leave will be granted to faculty and staff of SJCA. The applicant will utilize any remaining accumulated sick/personal leave days with pay and up to six (6) weeks without pay.

Sick LeaveThe absence of an employee for the following reasons shall be charged against earned sick leave: an illness, injury or temporary disability incapacitating the employee to perform assigned duties; an exposure to contagious disease substantiated by a physician's statement; an appointment for medical or dental examination or treatment when such appointment cannot be reasonable scheduled after school hours and the illness of a child or spouse. Leave for medical appointments must be approved in advance by the Headmaster.

SubstitutesA master list of substitutes is maintained in the school's main office. Your presence in the classroom guarantees the best growth for our students; however, you may require a substitute at some time. Therefore the earliest notification of a need for a substitute is advisable. Whenever possible, avoid calling to make arrangements on the morning you need to be away. All substitutes are arranged by the front office.

After returning to school, fill out an absentee slip in the secretary's office. Keep in mind a running tally of days absent to avoid over-extension of the given allocation.

The school in all cases will pay substitutes. It is inappropriate to pay a substitute as an alternative for being absent beyond the allowed limit of days. SJCA is contracting for your services, not that of a substitute.

Lunch ReportsThe Café Manager and Business Manager are acting on behalf of the Headmaster for the ordering and payment of lunches. They will establish procedures for the reporting of this data.

MoneyAll money collected and spent by or in the name of SJCA is monitored in detail by the Chairman of the Board of Directors. At the local level, teachers are often asked to collect money and occasionally are asked to make a purchase. No money may be raised or funds collected without the approval of the Headmaster. The first condition for approval is that a faculty member sponsors the event and is responsible for the collection and accounting of the money. Students give money to the adults sponsoring the events, and the sponsors will give the money to the Finance Office for deposit. The following guidelines must be followed when handling money:

Charges No one may charge or take on credit for anything without the express written consent of the Headmaster, and then only for one specific purchase with a purchase order.

Check/Reimbursement Procedures The Business Manager or Headmaster will issue all checks. No check will be issued unless documented by a written check request signed by the Headmaster. Do not purchase then ask. You must get the check request signed before you make a purchase if you expect to be reimbursed. Receipts and invoices are crucial and must be maintained.

Purchasing No one may make or authorize a purchase except the Headmaster or his or her designee.

Student Collections All monies collected must be turned in to the Finance Office with an explanation for the collection. The teacher is responsible for keeping up with individual student tallies. Continuing projects such as annual ad sales must be receipted individually by the sponsoring faculty member and turned in daily. No money should be held by a faculty member outside of the school accounting system, and all collected money is to be deposited with the Finance Office. All checks are to be made out to SJCA or endorsed over to SJCA. All book orders are to be deposited in the school account and a school check used for the purchase.

Note: Faculty members are responsible for all funds they collect and will reimburse the school for money lost when handled outside of these procedures. Any unsecured money (e.g. left in a desk drawer) lost or stolen will be reimbursed to the school by the faculty member.

Pay

Faculty & Staff Handbook Page 34 of 51

Page 35: ST€¦  · Web viewSt. John's Christian Academy (SJCA) is a college preparatory school organized within the framework of academic procedure and tradition. With the conviction that

Each person's salary or compensation is a private matter negotiated initially between that person and the Headmaster within the guidelines of the salary schedule. All salaried persons will be paid in 24 equal checks on the 5th and 20th of each month beginning on September 5. Persons paid by the hour will be paid on the 5th and 20th of each month as earned. Compensation must "pass through the books" of the school and be subject to withholding taxes.

Professional ConductProfessional conduct is lost when a teacher makes uncomplimentary and unseemly remarks about another teacher. When personal conduct is suspect, the Headmaster will address it. It is a constant part of Christian education that the staff of a Christian school is held to a high moral and ethical standard. We are to provide for the needs of the students; to serve as role models in our conduct, grammar, behavior, and work habits; and to establish the cordiality implicit in a relationship between concerned adults and children.

Public RelationsGood public relations results from running the best school SJCA can be. Professional conduct and devotion to quality education mirrors the teachers' greatest contributions to the school program. The best tools of public relations are happy children who are achieving at their highest levels and teachers who belong to a staff committed to professional excellence. If you observe a breach of conduct, let the Headmaster handle it within the school. Avoid negative conversations with parents concerning other teachers/staff. Speak highly of the school and be proud of its accomplishments since they are very surely your accomplishments.

P.T.O.The Parent Teacher Organization is an agent of communication for the parents to address each other, the Board, and the Headmaster while accomplishing the mission of supporting SJCA. The President is an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors.

Room ParentThe Board of Directors through the PTO has established a network of parents for the purposes of assisting the classroom teacher in special projects and activities.

Student Data

Faculty & Staff Handbook Page 35 of 51

Page 36: ST€¦  · Web viewSt. John's Christian Academy (SJCA) is a college preparatory school organized within the framework of academic procedure and tradition. With the conviction that

The Headmaster is responsible for the recording and dissemination of grades, attendance, discipline records, and other data collection for students. He/she will establish procedures for the reporting of this data.

Student GovernmentSixth through twelfth grade will be represented on the Student Council through an elected representative. The Council provides a vehicle for the students' communication among themselves and to the faculty through the sponsor. It also serves as a conduit back to the student body at large. The student council allows students the opportunity to assume responsibility and become more involved in the activities of SJCA. To be eligible to serve on the council, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher and not have been suspended from school the current school year.

Instruction and AssessmentInstruction involves making the student aware of objectives, carrying out plans for those objectives, restating the objectives and their relevance of the lesson and evaluating the learning of the student. The individual presentation of the lessons involves the art of teaching. Making the instruction relevant for the learner greatly increases the probability of accomplishing the goals and objectives of the curriculum of the school; pace and scope will be evaluated by both the teacher and headmaster. The teacher's primary role consists of providing effective instruction that leads to student learning. Teachers are charged with four responsibilities: (1) planning, (2) instruction, (3) assessment, and (4) selection of supporting materials.

CommunicationExcellent teaching demands communication by the teacher to the parents of students concerning progress and behavior. This communication should be written and/or oral and should contain positive as well as negative reports. It is imperative that teachers communicate frequently with parents of students whose academic progress is unsatisfactory. Documentation of communications and conferences should be kept on file by each teacher. Telephone calls and face-to face conferences are highly recommended. Our goal will be to strengthen support and relationships with the parents in order to influence greater student achievement.

A student in danger of being retained needs to be notified by the end of the third nine week grading period. A conference, initiated by the teacher, should be held with the teacher, administrator, student, and parents.

Grading

Faculty & Staff Handbook Page 36 of 51

Page 37: ST€¦  · Web viewSt. John's Christian Academy (SJCA) is a college preparatory school organized within the framework of academic procedure and tradition. With the conviction that

Teachers will refer to Student Handbook for details about our grading system. Grades will be reported eight times during the year -- at the end of each quarter and at a time designated or interim grades during each quarter. Grades will be reported by letter and number grades (such as A/98). No grade below 40 should be entered into the grade book if the student turns in the assignment. In the case an assignment is not turned in, a grade of 0 (zero) may be applied. Grades will be posted on RenWeb. These grades will be posted in the computer reporting system. The Registrar will handle permanent records. Teachers may access records through the guidance office. No one has direct access to records except the immediate staff of SJCA. All grades and standardized test scores are confidential and should be handled accordingly.

HomeworkAs a Christian school, we like to encourage our students to attend church/youth group on Wednesday nights. Therefore it is recommended that little homework be given on that night or that homework due on Thursday is given on Monday or Tuesday to give the student the option of doing the work ahead of time.

Note: No homework is to be assigned during the week of Stanford Testing.

Note: Holidays are meant to be a break from school work for both teachers and students. Therefore, homework specifically assigned over a holiday should be restricted to reading only. (This does not apply to long-term projects that the student has put off until the holiday to accomplish or complete.)

PlanningLong and Short Range planning are required. In long-range planning, the teacher is charged to work with the Headmaster in preparing and updating the curriculum and instructional guides. Those guides spell out expectations for the content used in the yearly goals and objectives. Short-range planning should reflect the teacher's plan for instruction on a daily basis and should be completed for at least the upcoming week. The daily plans should be entered in RenWeb. Each book should contain at least the major objectives and plans for each day's lessons. THREE-DAY EMERGENCY LESSONS PLANS MUST BE TURNED IN TO THE HEADMASTER AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

Movies in the Classroom Movies watched in the classroom should have a connection to the students' learning and the objectives of the current unit of study. Plans for watching a movie must be submitted to the

Selection of MaterialsTeachers are expected to evaluate teaching materials to include textbooks, workbooks and supporting materials. Generally, textbook series are to be reconsidered every 5 years. The Headmaster and Assistant Principal will be responsible for selection of books and supplies. The Registrar is responsible for distribution, accounting, and ordering of educational supplies and books.

SJCA Communication PlanLack of communication breeds suspicion; miscommunication causes mistakes; but clear and effective communication creates collaboration and harmony. We have many modes of communication at SJCA. Below is an outline of many of those electronic modes and their purposes.

Faculty & Staff Handbook Page 42 of 51

Page 43: ST€¦  · Web viewSt. John's Christian Academy (SJCA) is a college preparatory school organized within the framework of academic procedure and tradition. With the conviction that

RenWebThis is our primary online school management system. You should have the Ren Web icon on both your school and home computers or devices as you have access to it wherever you have Internet. Make sure you post student grades and major tests and assignments on Ren Web on a weekly basis. Ren Web is linked to our website. If you have your own website that you want students and parents to access, provide a link to it from Ren Web. You have access to student and family contact information through Ren Web. Ren Web also contains an e-mail and text alert system to notify school families of critical information. All school-wide e-mails and alerts must be approved by the headmaster or his designee.

School E-mailMost inter-school communication is done through e-mail. Each of you should have a school e-mail address that includes [email protected]. This is the e-mail address that should be used for school correspondence. Check your e-mail throughout the day during non-instructional time. All school-wide e-mails must be approved by the headmaster or his designee.

School Websitewww.sjcacavaliers.com. Its purpose is to positively promote the school to the public and prospective families and to communicate important events and information within the school family. To post information on the website, contact Mrs. Brooke Overholt or Dr. Denton. Lisa Kelly is our webmaster.

Social MediaSJCA utilizes social media such as Facebook to highlight student success and school activities. If you have positive information to post to school social media sites, send them to Mrs. Kelsey Villeponteaux or Dr. Denton for approval. Those SJCA faculty and staff members who use social media are strongly encouraged to use it responsibly and not to post any private student information or information that is critical of the school.

All electronic communication to students should be to groups or teams rather than to individual students. If you need to send a note to an individual student, copy his or her parent.

Discipline Guidelines for St. John's Christian AcademyIt is the intent of SJCA to provide a safe, disturbance-free environment where all students will feel secure and where learning is a top priority. To accomplish this goal, the administration, teachers, students, and parents must work together as a team.

Teachers will each develop their own class management systems that handle minor infractions of the rules. The administration will handle all major infractions.

Teachers should post class rules and consequences so that they are clearly visible to all students in a classroom.

Teachers should communicate their rules and consequences to the parents at the beginning of each school year, both in writing and at Open House.

Strategic Plan (2018-2023)A planning team of parents, staff, community members, and board members began the creation of a five-year strategic plan for St. John’s Christian Academy in the spring of 2018. This new plan serves as a catalyst for the school to stretch and develop higher levels of excellence in academics and deeper depths of spirituality. The innovative plan includes a mission statement, objectives, and strategies centered on five major goals for improvement: Academics, Security, Facilities, Communications, and Athletics. Strategies and action items have been developed to move the school towards the achievement of our mission.

Mission

“Promoting academic excellence and fostering spiritual growth through a college-preparatory curriculum in a Christian environment”

Plan Execution

Vision: SJCA will be known as an academy providing quality, college preparatory Christian education for families willing to sacrifice for their children.

• Help students successfully transition from one level to another within our school with the goal of 100% enrollment in a college program at the end of their high school career.

• Provide students with opportunities to compete successfully on athletic teams, which are competitive at the regional/state levels, while promoting Christian principles.

• To provide facilities that attract future families and maintain current families and to offer competitive salaries and benefits to employees while keeping tuition affordable.

• SJCA will be known as an academy providing quality, college preparatory Christian education for families willing to sacrifice for their children.

• To further develop relationships with local churches, the community and the SJCA family.• To provide staff, students, and visitors a safe and healthy environment.

Enrollment and Budgeting Goals

Since 2013, SJCA’s enrollment has ranged from 327-336 students from pre-school through high school. Over the next five years, SJCA would like to exceed 380 students in enrollment through continued school improvement and effective marketing.

Increasing enrollment will provide additional income to fund necessary capital improvements and increase salaries and benefits for employees.
