#1-016Dear Parishioners, Mystagogy

As a Church we continue to celebrate Easter. We do so for 50 days. Throughout this Easter Season we are called to reflect upon our experience of how Jesus has graced us with forgiveness, recovery, Easter and New life. These recollections are meant to reassure us that Jesus, who has been with us in the past, will be with us in the future.

The questions to ask yourself daily during the Easter Season are, “How has Jesus been at work in my life?” “How did Jesus grace my life during Lent with forgiveness, healing, recovery, Easter, and new life?”

May your recollections grace you with a heightened awareness that Jesus is indeed risen, alive and at work in your life. It is no wonder that Christians, aware of the faith, love and goodness that Jesus has brought to life in them, proclaim ALLELUIA over and over again throughout these 50 days.

Mother’s Day Mass IntentionsAll Masses on Mother’s Day will be offered

for our mothers, living and deceased. On the tables with the bulletins, there are cards and envelopes for you to enroll your mother. Please use a large envelope if your mother is living. (This large envelope has a mother’s day card which you can give to your mother.) If your mother is deceased, please use a small envelope.

“A Lottery Thank you”The monthly Lottery Drawing that we have

had to raise needed funds for the School has come to an end. As it does so, I am most grateful to all who made the Lottery a successful fundraiser for the parish.

Thank you, sellers! Every month you asked people to support us by buying a ticket. Your dedication and commitment, your love for Saint Anselm was seen in all you did.

Thank you, buyers of the tickets! Your generous support enabled the Lottery to be successful.

Thank you, volunteers who separated and packed the tickets.

Thank you, Kathy Zaremski, for serving as bookkeeper, treasurer, secretary, and cheerleader for the Lottery Drawing.

Seller’s Prize – April

The Lottery Seller’s Prize for the month of April has been won by Betty Vernalis.Catholic Charities Appeal –

Showing that we careEveryone is asked to make a generous,

charitable, financial contribution to the Archdiocesan Catholic Charities Appeal.

Approximately 250,000 people are served annually in some way by the Appeal. Through the generosity of the people of the Archdiocese – children with special needs or in need of foster homes and adoptive families – the sick and infirm – the homeless and the poor – people in need of counseling and social services are cared for.For more information visit

1 st Holy Communion This weekend, 88 children in our Parish

received their first Holy Communion. May the love, joy, and faith that are so alive

within our children and their families at this time continue to grow and remain healthy and alive within them. May they always remain in communion with Jesus who will nourish, strengthen and energize a spirit of faith, hope, and love in them.

I am most grateful to all who helped prepare our children for their 1st Communion. I am grateful for the parents, guardians, teachers and catechists Mrs. Milligan, Mrs. Montag, Mrs. Meehan, Mrs. Scanlon, and Ms. Mastalsz. Thank you, Mrs. Leonetti, for enabling our children to sing with such joy and love.

Carnival “Thank you” (Part I)Carnival Chances: Thank you, Marie

Druding for all your help behind the scenes organizing and processing our Carnival chances.

Thank you to everyone who distributed chances to your neighbors’ homes. I am especially grateful to our Grade School and High School students who helped deliver the chances.

Set-up: Jack Tolchin, Jack Finnegan and Vince Hollister have returned once again to assist Jerry McGuckin, Director of Maintenance, in erecting the booths and helping with the carnival set-up.

Thank you to John Masterson, Sr. and Franny Jackson who have traveled about picking up donations and supplies for our kitchen and midway.

Thanks also to Wayne Stevens for distributing the posters advertising the Carnival.

God bless you, Father Dunleavy

Honoring & Celebrating Mary

~~Our Lady of Mount Carmel~~

Mount Carmel Mount Carmel is a mountain located 20 miles from Nazareth on the border between Samaria and Galilee.

Mount Carmel stretches 15 miles across Palestine. It overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. In Greek Carmel means Garden of God. Mount Carmel is known for its beauty, majesty, rich vegetation, and abundant variety of beautiful flowers. Mount Carmel is a place of fruitfulness and beauty.

Mount Carmel is revered as a holy mountain by Christians, Jews, and Muslims. God is given a place of priority in those who resided or visited Mount Carmel.

Biblical references to Mount Carmel illustrate both the unique beauty of this holy mountain and its spiritual significance.

Mount Carmel is the place where God gathered his people and conquered evil and idolatry (the Old Testament people had drifted away from God and were worshipping false gods - 1 Kings 18: 19, 20). God told Elijah to gather his people on Mount Carmel where a great spiritual battle would take place. The false gods are defeated. God is again worshipped. (Our Lady of Mount Carmel assists us in spiritual battle to bring about a victory of good over evil.)

The prophet Elijah lived on Mount Carmel. Elijah was chosen by God, as a leader, to bring the Israelites back to God and to restore the people to their covenant with God.

During a time of severe drought, Elijah prayed on Mount Carmel for rain. God answered his prayers; a cloud rose out of the sea bringing rain and the drought ended.

Elijah was among the Old Testament prophets who encouraged the people to live in right relationship with God. (Mary encourages the same.)

Carmelites Carmelites was the name given to Christian monks (hermits) who started to live on Mount Carmel in the late 12th and early 13th Centuries. These Carmelite monks strove for personal holiness through prayer and contemplation.

These Carmelites were known for their devotion to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. They built a chapel on Mount Carmel which they dedicated to Mary, calling it Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel.

The Carmelites sought Mary’s intercession. Like the cloud that brought the rains to a parched earth during the time of Elijah, Mary brings life – her Son – to a parched world.

From Mount Carmel, the Carmelite community spread to Europe and around the world. They are known as Carmelites.

Our Lady of Mount CarmelMary, our Blessed Mother became patroness of the Carmelite Order. The Carmelites look to Mary as a

Spiritual Mother. Carmelites see in Mary 1) a perfect model of the interior life of prayer and contemplation to which the Carmelites aspire, (2) a model of virtue, and (3) a person who was closest in life with Jesus. Mary is seen as one who points Christians to Christ saying what she said at Cana“Do whatever he tells you.”

Devotion to Our Lady of Mount CarmelDevotion to OLMC means a special call to the interior life, to resemble Mary in heart and spirit. We gaze

into Mary’s soul; we see that grace has flowered into a beautiful spiritual life. Mary’s soul is a sanctuary where God dwells. Mary’s Immaculate Heart is the perfect environment for God’s life to flourish.

We honor Mary, our Blessed Mother, and seek her intercession to help us grow in holiness and to remain close (in communion with) her son, Jesus. As our Lady of Mount Carmel, Mary, as our Mother, seeks to protect and keep us safe from the forces of darkness, evil, and sin that can separate us from God. As Mother, Our Lady of Mount Carmel seeks to keep us ever-close to her son, Jesus, whose merciful love will keep our hearts, souls, andlives fertile and fruitful.
