My dear Parishioners, Twenty years ago, Marianne Wilson saw a need; thousands of people with critical illnesses were going hungry in her area of Southern California, and she just wasn't going to stand for it. She began cooking healthy meals and delivering them to men, women and children dying from HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other diseases at no cost to the recipients. Today, the organization is known as Project Angel Food, and every year produces over 400,000 meals and delivers them to more than 1,600 people. On its Web site, it says, "We act out of a sense of urgency because hunger and illness do not wait." It had been barely twenty-four hours since the miracle of the loaves and fishes; thousands had found nourish-ment. Jesus and his disciples had crossed the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum, and still many in the crowd from the day before found him, wanting another miracle. But Jesus offered them and us a greater miracle; if we are only to believe in the Son of God, we will never hunger again. Our faith is our work; this work will be generously rewarded. In the Lord's Prayer, we pray, "Give us this day our daily bread." Fully understanding today's Gospel reading from John enables us to comprehend the dual meaning of this petition: our bodies will hunger, please provide nourish-ment, and our souls hunger, please provide through our faith the bread of life that is faith in Jesus Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that "the drama of hunger in the world calls Christians who pray sincerely to exercise responsibility toward their brethren, both in their personal behavior and in their solidarity with the human family" (CCC 2831). What preparations did Blessed Pope John XXIII en-act during the spring and summer of 1959 to prepare for the ecumenical council? Fifty years ago, newly-elected Pope John XXIII an-nounced his desire to convoke an ecumenical council. His announcement encountered a variety of reactions and objec-tions. However, John felt compelled to pursue his Spirit-led desire for a council. In May 1959, John established an Ante-Preparatory Commission whose task was to survey the world's bishops and other interested parties on topics the council should address. The commission, led by Cardinal Tardini, wrote an open letter requesting suggestions of topics and areas of con-cerns that the council might address. The letter of June 18, 1959 stated "the Venerable Pontiff wants to know the opinion or views and to obtain the suggestions and wishes of their excellencies, the bishops and prelates who are summoned." Some 2,598 letters were sent, and 1,998 responses were returned, an excellent response rate of seventy-seven per-cent. The shortest response was six lines from the bishop of Wollongong in Australia, while the longest response was twenty-seven pages from the cardinal archbishop of Guada-lajara, Mexico. The information gathered in response to the June letter filled twelve volumes. This comprehensive and consultative preparation set in motion the groundbreaking ecumenical council.

July2009 ST. WILLIAM

Stewardship is what I do after I say “I believe!”

The Christian Community, described in the Acts of the Apostles, understood and practiced stewardship. The be-lievers did not claim anything as their own, but held every-thing in common, and distributed to each whatever was needed.

YEAR FOR PRIESTS

The Year for Priests was pro-

claimed by Pope Benedict XVI to begin

on June 19, 2009 through the same date in

2010. What do you think is the reason

why the Holy Father has instituted this

Year for Priests? The Decree on the Min-

istry and Life of Priests of the Second

Vatican Council (Presbyterorum ordinis)

states : “The holiness of priests is itself

an important contribution to the fruitful-

ness of their ministry. It is true that God’s

grace can effect the work of salvation

even through unworthy ministers, but God

ordinarily prefers to show his wonders by

means of those who are more submissive

to the inspiration and guidance of the

Holy Spirit, and, are able to say with Saint

Paul: I live, but no longer is it I who live, it is Christ who lives within me.
