Stadiums

Both countries consider stadium renovation andconstruction to be of key importance to the de-velopment and promotion of national football.We will be providing eight state-of-the-art sta-diums for the European Championship Finals -four in each country. Sixteen of the 31 final roundmatches will be held in Austria, and 15 will takeplace in Switzerland. A detailed schedule ofmatches is to be found in chapter 1. Both associa-tions will supply the necessary technical infra-structure and will fulfil the basic requirements setdown in the schedule of conditions.Three of the eight stadiums are in use. The twomodern stadiums of Vienna and Innsbruck are be-ing extended; the stadium in Basle was recentlyopened (March 2001).Three other of the eightstadiums are currently under construction,(Salzburg, Geneva and Berne). Finally, the remain-ing two are in planning (Klagenfurt and Zurich).Six of the eight stadiums are multi-purpose com-plexes, which will continue to be used after EURO 2008.These complexes offer other ameni-ties, such as hotels, shopping centres, offices, busi-ness premises, retirement flats and fitness centres, aswell as football facilities.Thanks to this multi-pur-pose approach and the use of cutting-edge tech-nology (such as solar panels on the stadium roof toprovide energy) it will be possible for the stadiumsin both countries to be used cost-effectively on along-term basis.All the stadiums were planned in conjunctionwith the local security authorities and complywith UEFA security requirements for internation-al matches.This means that fixed surveillance cam-eras both inside and outside the stadiums and po-lice command posts with all the essentialsurveillance installations are part of the basicequipment in every stadium. We have examinedthe technical specifications of the draft stadiumagreement in the UEFA schedule of conditions indetail and included them in all our stadium proj-ects (see the 8 checklists in Volume II, chapter 5).Facilities such as segregated approach areas andseating areas for fans of each team, security equip-ment and UEFA-compliant media installationswere included in the plans.The wishes and needsof the major television broadcasters in both coun-tries were also taken into account in the plans

from the start.The projects will be monitored dur-ing the construction phase by experts from the te-levision broadcasting companies.The stadium projects are being financed in differ-ent ways in each of the applicant countries. InSwitzerland, financing will be provided primarilyby private investors. The government also con-tributed funds towards the construction of newstadiums as early as the late nineties. Thanks tothese initial contributions and investments fromindustry, three of the four planned stadiums forEURO 2008 are already complete or under con-struction (Basle, Geneva, Berne). The fourth sta-dium is at an advanced stage of planning. It is dueto be opened in 2006, irrespective of UEFA's de-cision on where EURO 2008 will be held.The stadiums in Austria are being financed byagreements between the government, the states andthe municipalities. In principle, the government,states and municipalities aim to provide a third ofthe financing each. In the city of Vienna, the costsare being divided equally between the governmentand the municipality of Vienna.The federal govern-ment is providing a financing guarantee for theAustrian stadium projects, backed up by relevantdecisions by the Cabinet. It is only supporting proj-ects which aim to set up stadium infrastructure.Allsuitable projects were checked and approved by ex-ternal, recognised experts in accordance with theFederal Law on the Promotion of Sports.

The following includes descriptions and illustra-tions of the eight stadiums.Details of each stadiumcan be found in the relevant checklist in VolumeII, chapter 5.The checklist shows that UEFA's re-quirements for each aspect of infrastructure (in-cluding media, security and VIP hospitality) havebeen fulfilled.We will support precise monitoring of the techni-cal requirements by a UEFA inspection commit-

tee.Moreover,we will be very happy to provide allthe documents and contact persons required byUEFA for the inspection of all the stadium facili-ties and for effective monitoring of progress inrenovation and construction work.All such workwill be completed by December 2006 at the latestas required.

Training Centres

We wish to offer UEFA proposals for suitabletraining centres close to both venues and hotels,and will accept the final decision of UEFA after ithas examined the proposals in detail.The criteriafor team hotels were also taken into account in theselection of training centres. Our aim was to find

premises which were centrally located but whichstill met participants' needs for rest and recovery.The proposed training centres have often beenused in the past by selected teams from both asso-ciations.As a result, we have an excellent workingrelationship with the owners and managers ofthese facilities, based on trust and ongoing part-nership. All training centres were selected in ac-cordance with the UEFA guidelines on trainingcentres. Particular consideration was given to theneed for press offices, stadium surveillance facili-ties and proximity to the team hotel.

In Volume II, chapter 5, pictures, plans and de-scriptions of all the training centres are shown.The proposed training centres are as follows:

The city

The visitor to Vienna never ceases to be amazed.The numerous sights and places for contemplation inthe Austrian capital are not easy to describe in a few words. St. Stephan's Dome, Schönbrunn Palace, theState Opera, the Burg Theatre, ... the list goes on and on:Vienna offers everything - a world city whosepulse continuously beats faster.This ancient capital of the Republic of Austria is the former home of emperors and its stately elegancegoes back to the years of the Austrian/Hungarian Double Monarchy. It also a showcase of daring mod-ern architecture, the colourful excitement of modern-day life, and the cultural riches of a major me-tropolis.The gateway to the east, it is small enough to feel homely but big enough to offer you every-thing you could wish for.

Description of location of the stadium within the city

The stadium is located in Vienna's 2nd district, in the Prater - one of the city's largest recreational areas,in the immediate vicinity of the Danube River.The area also contains the Ferry Dusika Bicycle Stadi-um, which will be the Media Center, the Krieau racecourse, the Freudenau horse-racing track, and theStadionbad, which is one of the largest outdoor swimming pools in Vienna. Close to the stadium area,there is a new Conference Centre, where the International Broadcasting Centre will be located.The stadium is located approx. 3.5 km to the east of the centre of Vienna.

Multifunctional use

The entire area under the first tier, as well as partsof the area under the second tier, contain meetingrooms, cloakrooms, building maintenance offices,workshops, storerooms and offices.The total sur-face area is 20,700 m2.

Security

The stadium is divided into three tiers and six sec-tors (A to F).

Security features include:

• Spectators separated from the pitch by strongconcrete walls: height difference between thefirst tier and the pitch is four metres.

• Strict separation of the three tiers as well as allsectors with strong, wire-mesh fences.

• Construction of a balustrade around the top ofthe stadium for police and other securityforces, separate from spectator areas.

• Telescopic tunnel between the pitch and theteams dressing rooms & trainer-cabins.

• Police command post and first aid centre locat-ed diagonally opposite each other.

• Security measures at admission points: barriers,turnstiles, wire-mesh fences, etc.

All necessary modernisation work will be com-pleted by 2006 at the latest; the measures will cov-er the following individual items:

• Upgrading of PA system

• Expansion of stadium capacity to 53,295 seats(gross) or 50,008 seats (net)

• New scoreboard

The city

Klagenfurt - the rose of Lake WörtherKlagenfurt is Austria's meeting point between North and South, East and West, where three culturalgroups intersect. It has frequently been awarded the "Europe Nostra Prize" for its exemplary preserva-tion of the old town, a signal of the love and care that is lavished on the city. Klagenfurt offers both pul-sating life and relaxation in pleasant surroundings. Lake Wörther is famous all over the world for thequality of its drinking water, and Klagenfurt is the rose of Lake Wörther.

Situation in the town

The new stadium location is in Klagenfurt-Westin Waidmannsdorf, between the Südring undSiebenhügelstrasse or Glanfurt, approximately 2.7kilometres from the town centre as the crow flies.Since the current Waidmannsdorf stadium wasconstructed, there have been long-term plans toextend its amenities by building sports, leisure andrecreational facilities on the south-eastern sectionof the site.The current stadium complex will beused as a centre for ball sports, connected to asports academy.There is also ample potential for the developmentof a sports park to the east, south and west of thesite.This would make for a smooth transition be-tween the stadium and Siebenhügel recreationalarea.The stadium is located to the south-west of thetown within the curve of the Südring, which runsfrom the west to the south of the town. The Sü-dring provides an ideal link to the main transportnetwork of the state capital. The stadium can bereached by car via the A2 southbound motorwayvia Klagenfurt West junction both from the eastand the west.Vehicles coming from the town cen-

tre can approach the stadium via Siebenhügel-strasse / Waidmannsdorferstrasse. It is approxi-mately 2.5 kilometres from the entrance to thewestbound A2 motorway in Minimundus, approx-imately 4.5 kilometres from the western motor-way junction of Hallegg, approximately 3.5 kilo-metres from Klagenfurt main railway station and4.5 kilometres from Krumpendorf railway station.A reliable link by efficient rail and shuttle bus serv-ices can therefore be guaranteed.The main railway station is close to the centre andcan be reached by bus. Lend and Viktring railwaystations are 10 to 15 minutes away on foot.

Description of the stadium

If UEFA decides in favour of the Austro-Swisscandidacy, a brand new stadium complex will beconstructed in Klagenfurt.The impressive sportingachievements of the Austrian league team, FC Ke-lag Kärnten, and the state of the current Waid-mannsdorf stadium helped accelerate the decisionto build a new stadium. UEFA requirements havebeen included in the plans of the new stadium asfar as possible.

All the main entrances are on the ground floor.There are five separate sections for paying guests,which can be adapted according to spectatornumbers. Every section has its own catering, secu-rity and medical facilities. In front of the westernentrance towers, there will be a two-storey struc-ture with the following functions: Accreditation,Organisation, Media and Prestige partner village.The VIP area will have a glass front offering VIPguests an optimum view of the pitch.There will bea large press conference area below the VIP area.The size of the TV compound is in line with theUEFA schedule of conditions and it is directlylinked to the football stadium.All relevant departments (fire service, building in-spection authorities, underground engineering,town planning, construction) of the city of Kla-genfurt were involved in the planning.An analysisof the feasibility of the structure has also been car-ried out.

Transport

The venue town of Klagenfurt lies directly on animportant motorway and a major Austrian FederalRailways route. It also has an international airport15 minutes from the town centre. Furthermore,there are some other international airports nearby:Ljubljana (Slovenia), Trieste-Ronchi (Italy) andGraz.The two-track, southbound rail route offersan excellent link between Vienna and Italy.At themajor transport hub of Villach, 40 kilometres fromKlagenfurt, further important routes branch off to-wards Germany and Slovenia.The A2 southboundmotorway provides a first-class road connection

between the town of Klagenfurt and Central Eu-rope, once again via the transport hub of Villach.From there, the A10/Tauern motorway leads to-wards Salzburg/Germany, and the A11/Kara-wanken motorway heads towards Slovenia. Com-prehensive parking facilities, combined with anexemplary shuttle service, ensures that motor vehi-cle traffic for major events flows smoothly.There isa total of approximately 5,150 parking spaces avail-able close to the stadium.These can be reached viathe A2 southbound motorway.Visitors will then betransported to the central bus stop west of the sta-dium at the junction of Siebenhügelstrasse and theSüdring. From here, spectators can reach the mainentrance on the north side of the stadium. Passen-gers arriving in Klagenfurt by train will be trans-ferred to shuttle buses at the main railway station.The shuttle bus service will bring them from thestation to the stadium (journey time of approxi-mately 10 minutes).Coaches will be directed to the Südring. Therewill be parking facilities for coaches to the southof the stadium.

Plan of next steps/financing

The stadium will be completed in December2006 in accordance with the deadlines set down inthe UEFA schedule of conditions. Financing willbe provided by the Austrian federal government.Discussions about dividing costs equally betweenthe federal government, the federal state and thetown are being held according to schedule.

Salzburg offers romantic walks, stays at historical locations and unforgettable encounters with the pastand the future.The city's most famous son is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. However Salzburg meets morethan just the highest cultural standards.At the so called "world stage" city you always feel at ease.The oldtown has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.


The new stadium is approximately 1 kilometrenorth-east of the Wals-Siezenheim centre betweenthe industrial track outside Schloss Kleßheim es-tate and the A1 westbound motorway.To the northand south, the rapidly growing industrial andcommercial areas with their large buildings andinstallations are clearly visible. To the east of themotorway, about 400 metres from the new stadi-

um, is the Salzburg district of Taxham, a residentialarea with multi-storey apartment buildings, rele-vant infrastructure and a large shopping centrewith a high volume of customers.The new stadi-um can be readily reached via a direct motorwayexit.Approximately 200,000 people live in the im-mediate vicinity of Salzburg, and there are a fur-ther 257 communities with around 980,000 in-habitants within a radius of 50 kilometres of thetown.


The brand new stadium of Salzburg is a single-purpose football stadium, and will be opened on asmaller scale in the summer of 2003 to seat18,000. The home ground of SV WüstenrotSalzburg, it has a total surface area of 15 hectares,including parking areas.The design by the architectural bureau, SchusterArchitekten Düsseldorf, was the winning projectin a Europe-wide architectural competition.Theirconcept reduces the height of the outside walls toa minimum and lowers the playing field as much

as possible.The internal stadium area is surround-ed by an external building. This "wall building"makes it possible to incorporate ancillary rooms, asupporters café, ticket sales, shops and sports of-fices in the stadium complex, as well as a numberof less typical premises, such as fitness and healthstudios, offices etc., without the need to cover thewhole stadium ground with additional buildings.The area around the stadium will be converted toa country park, so that the whole complex blendsinto the landscape. New leisure facilities will alsobe provided, from installations for trend sportssuch as inline skating to conventional amenities

Transport

The A1 goes directly past the stadium grounds,and suitable motorway entrance and exit roads arealready available.The southbound Tauern motor-way (A10) is only a few kilometres from the stadi-um,and the site is easily accessible by private trans-port. Salzburg airport is approximately 1 km awayand can be reached directly by motorway.The federal government and the federal state areinvesting a joint sum of EUR 160 million in a lo-cal public transport infrastructure programme.Thewestern railway route passes within 600 m of thestadium, and a stadium station (Liefering) is due tobe built on the Salzburg - Munich rail route, withlocal trains every quarter of an hour.The stationwill be approximately 1 kilometre from the stadi-um. A bus terminal will be set up specifically forcoaches, which will allow visitors to reach themain entrance without crossing any roads.The lo-cal bus routes will be extended to the stadium forthe matches. They will have their own approachroad - currently under construction - from thenorth to the stadium car parks.In addition, there isa direct rail connection to the west of the plannedstadium site, which is used for commercial andmilitary purposes.This ancillary track is only usedwhen necessary, and it could be included in theoverall organisational plans.

The stadium is 600m away on foot.There is also adirect bus line to Schloß Kleßheim. In addition, itis readily accessible by pedestrian/cycleway, and itcan be easily reached from the town of Salzburgand the surrounding communities.

Parking areas

The proposed parking areas can be seen on the enclosed plan of the site. They comply with theUEFA schedule of conditions.

Costs

Approximately EUR 44 million have been bud-geted for the total construction costs of the small-er-scale version of the stadium to seat 18,200. Afurther EUR 15 million will be invested in ex-tending the seating capacity to 31,500.The costs will be divided equally between the feder-al government, the federal state and the municipality,and the Austrian government will provide a guaran-tee for the overall financing.This guarantee is coveredby decisions reached in the Federal Council.More information at:www.salzburg.gv.at/stadion/index.htmFor technical details, see enclosed overview.

The project proposes using Salzburg trade fairgrounds for media facilities during the EuropeanChampionship Finals. The CD-Hotel in thegrounds has already been reserved for media rep-

resentatives.The trade fair site is only a few kilo-metres from the stadium, and a shuttle service willbe set up for the media representatives.Moreover, there are premises in the area aroundSchloss Kleßheim or the Kavalierhaus in the im-mediate vicinity of the stadium which will beavailable for use by UEFA.

Innsbruck - in the heart of the Alps

This city of 128,000 inhabitants is known as thetreasure of the Alps. Innsbruck is surrounded byhigh mountains and is set in a magnificent naturallandscape, which gives it a unique charm.The Ty-rolean regional capital can look back on a livelyhistory,with great names such as Maximilian I andEmpress Maria Teresa associated with it. Innsbruckhas twice been the venue for the Winter Olympicsand offers a mixture of natural wonders, culture,sport and tradition, along with the flair of an in-ternational conference and university city.Innsbruck's development has been determinedabove all by its central position at the intersectionof the most important north-south and east-west

transport axes. Innsbruck, located in the Alps at theheart of Europe, is a communications hub be-tween the economically flourishing, relativelydensely populated conurbations in the north ofItaly and the south of Germany. It also links theSwiss and Eastern Austrian/Eastern Europeancatchment areas. Moreover, Innsbruck's airport(with the latest aircraft approach equipment) is di-rectly linked to the international flight network.Innsbruck has twice staged the Winter Olympicsand is still an important sports centre. It offers awide variety of activities both in summer andwinter, and the citizens of the Tyrolean capital en-joy taking part in sports too: its 45 sports associa-tions, boasting more than 72 clubs and a total ofapproximately 33,000 members, offer somethingfor everyone.


Since 2000, Innsbruck has had its own single-pur-pose, modern football stadium,Tivoli-Neu, locat-ed to the south of the town on the site betweenthe Olympic ice stadium and the motorway. It isthe home ground of FC Tirol, the Austrian cham-pions from 2000 to 2002.Innsbruck International Airport is approximately15 minutes from the stadium,and 10 minutes fromInnsbruck main railway station. The nearest mo-torway connection is only 5 minutes from the sta-dium by car.The stadium enjoys the advantages of a central lo-cation and excellent accessibility by public trans-port.

Description of stadium

Tivoli-Neu was built in accordance with the win-ning design by Viennese architect,Albert Wimmer(in partnership with Rhomberg constructioncompany from Bregenz), in an architectural com-petition. The stadium is oriented north-south,with transparent roofing over the seating areas. IfAustria and Switzerland are selected to hold theEuropean Championships, it will extend its seatingcapacity to 31,600. A large, 10,000 m2 passagewaywith club premises, sports shops, a fitness centre,massage facilities, etc. has been cleverly integratedinto the stadium complex.The new stadium will be unique in terms of itssuccessful use of urban space and landscaping.

Moreover, the functional areas (training ground,climbing wall) are particularly well-linked and aresuited to long-term use.The Austrian Football Association has already heldinternational matches in the stadium, which cur-rently seats 15,400.

Stadium Operator

The stadium operator is the Innsbruck construc-tion company ISPA, which is owned by the townof Innsbruck.

Transport

The Tivoli sports facilities are currently linked tothe town centre and the main railway station bythree bus lines.The bus stops are at present west ofthe ice stadium in Olympiastraße. One of thethree lines also goes through Resselstraße. TheOlympiastraße, to the north of the current sportsfacilities, forms part of the east-west link betweenthe southern town centre and Innsbruck Ost mo-

torway exit. Resselstraße, to the east of the sportsfacilities, offers a link to smaller towns south ofInnsbruck. There are plans for both lanes of theResselstraße to be put together at the same time asthe work on the sports centre, and for a link fromResselstraße to the Inntal motorway.

Parking requirements at Tivoli-Neu will only bepartially met by parking facilities due to be con-structed for approximately 600 vehicles.The fol-lowing additional measures are proposed:

• Increase the number of parking spaces on thecompetition site

• Construct parking facilities in the northernsection of the Tivoli-Neu development area inOlympiastraße

• Provide further parking areas south of Wiesen-gasse

• Provide more generous bus parking areasCyclists and pedestrians can reach Tivoli stadiumvia the pedestrian/cycleways next to the road.Thislink will be greatly improved by the constructionof a pedestrian/cycle bridge over the tracks nearthe main railway station, which will continuethrough the north-south green belt.

The new Zurich Stadium will be constructed bythe end of 2006 on the site of the current HardturmStadium, in the booming suburb of Zurich West. Itwill serve as the home stadium for both the FCZurich and Grasshoppers football clubs.The stadi-um is approximately four kilometres west of the citycentre. The Zurich architects Marcel Meili andMarkus Peter, who enjoy an international reputa-tion,emerged as the clear winners of an overall per-formance study (in partnership with the Conzettengineering company and with Batigroup as gen-eral contractors).This means that the city of Zurichwill acquire a highly modern football stadium withcovered seating for over 30,000 spectators that willbe the only one of its kind in the world.

The Zurich Stadium will become a landmark inthis lively city. Corresponding importance will be

The largest city in Switzerland (about 1 million people live in the Zurich region) is a world centre forart, culture, design and architecture - a place that is constantly on the move.The English fashion maga-zine "Wallpaper" voted the Swiss metropolis "most attractive city 2000".All roads lead to the businesscentre of Zurich, a city that never sleeps and has important domestic and international connections.Withreference to the annual Mercer study (the 2001 edition that takes a closer look at 215 cities worldwide),Zurich leads the world in terms of quality of life, just ahead of Vienna.The cities were assessed accord-ing to 39 criteria such as political stability, economic development, medical services, public services andpublic transport.

The combination of apentagonal inner space with the rectangular play-ing area allows for the best possible seatingarrangement and privileged locations for the box-es and sky boxes.The shape of the stadium bowl isvisible as part of the cityscape from a long distance.The stadium has a generous outer space with twolarge squares that can be used as assembly areas forthe arena.

Pfingstweidstrasse with two stops is being con-structed. On the neighbouring site to the south aspecial station for large events is being built.The Zurich Stadium is easily accessible by road,with a motorway exit in the direct vicinity. Suffi-cient parking space can be made available for EURO 2008.This will involve the use of shuttlebuses to make more distant locations accessible.International transport connections are providedby the nearby Zurich main railway station (4 km)and the easily accessible Zurich Unique interna-tional airport (15 km).

Financing

The three landowners are making the ground forthe stadium interior and the multifunctional areaavailable free of charge. The stadium is being fi-nanced via the multifunctional outlets, which willbe rented out at prices in keeping with the loca-tion.The stadium itself will be placed in the handsof an operating company. This company will as-sume responsibility for organising and co-ordinat-ing all activities to make sure that the infrastruc-ture is exploited in the best possible way. Stadium operation

The operational and organisational features of theoverall complex meet UEFA requirements in fullby offering solutions that are rated as excellent byfootball, security and media experts.The stadium construction is divided into separatelayers to ensure that its multifunctional aspects (in-cluding retail and gastronomic outlets) can be op-erated simultaneously and independently. Onlythe hotel extends from the lower part of the build-ing into the ring of the stands, thus benefitingfrom the atmosphere of the stadium interior.The raised warm-up terrace can be reached via adense network of stairways from the eastern andwestern forecourts. The flow of crowds issuingfrom the stadium's own railway station and tramstop will be channelled directly to this terrace bymeans of passageways.Access to the raised area willbe subject to efficient controls.The pentagonal stadium interior practically elim-inates from the spectator area any restricted viewsin the corners of the playing area. The diagonalsections include inner facades, which are reservedfor balconies, boxes, bars and VIP areas due to theirdesirable location.On the other side, the hotel sec-tion completes the inner space, together withmore sky boxes and business clubs.This arrange-ment helps to reproduce the intimate atmosphereof English stadiums and at the same time strength-ens the impression of circular movement.The ground construction, admission of air be-tween the lower and upper layers and the semi-transparent roof afford the best possible conditionsfor growth of natural grass.As on the arena level of an amphitheatre, the func-tional level of the stadium includes the necessaryfacilities for operations, security and media, allarranged in a circular constellation around theplaying area.An interior walkway connects the in-dividual areas, which in turn have their own inte-rior openings.The arrangements for security, op-erations, dressing rooms and media are designed tooptimise each function and, thanks to the addi-tional space available, can be easily adapted to thespecial requirements of EURO 2008.

The city

Basle - meeting point of cultures

The city of Basle lies at the heart of Europe, where Germany, France and Switzerland meet.Around twomillion people live in the cross-border region of Basle.The centre, the city of Basle, enjoys a reputationas the Swiss cultural capital.The river Rhine splits the town into Big Basle and Little Basle.The city fea-tures not only medieval architecture, but also modern buildings designed by international contemporaryarchitects, as well as a number of important museums.


The opening of the new St. Jakob-Park Stadium inMarch 2001 marked the beginning of a new erafor Swiss football. Basle opened the way for a newgeneration of highly modern multifunctional sta-diums in Switzerland. The new arena, the homeground for FC Basel, was built on the site of theold St. Jakob Stadium. The stadium lies approxi-mately three kilometres to the east of the city cen-tre.This district, which is a well-known sports andrecreation area, includes the Basle Sporthalle (ven-ue for Tennis Swiss Indoors) and the new ice-hockey stadium (under construction).


The stadium was built by the world-famous Baslearchitects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron(their work includes the New Tate Gallery in Lon-don and the Munich Arena, venue for the openingmatch of the 2006 World Cup), in collaborationwith the Marazzi AG engineering company. Thefirst multifunctional stadium in Switzerland in-cludes an old people's home with 107 apartments,

a shopping centre, extensive office space and sev-eral restaurants.The St. Jakob-Park site is enclosed by the railwayline on its northern side, by the River Birs to theeast, the ice-hockey stadium and the Sporthalle tothe south and the motorway slip road to the west.

Stadium operations

The new St. Jakob-Park Stadium is a stadium de-signed primarily for football. It contains over30,000 covered seats and its VIP area offers thehighest possible level of comfort; this includes ex-tensive hospitality areas, eleven boxes (132 seats intotal) and a business area for over 1,000 guests, aswell as the stadium's own TV centre with over 200screens.The stadium is also equipped with a high-ly modern infrastructure that can be used to hostconcerts, shows and festivals.The arrangements for security,operations,dressingrooms and media are designed to optimise eachfunction and, thanks to the additional space avail-able, can be easily adapted to the special require-ments of EURO 2008.

The basement area of the stadium contains a largeshopping centre with total retail space of 16,100m2.Another pioneering aspect is the installation of asolar power generator on the stadium roof, whichis run as part of a feasibility study by the Green-peace environmental organisation.The solar mod-ules convert sunlight into electricity and supplyaround 130,000 kWh annually,which correspondsto the average electricity consumption of 40households. The generator is about 1,200 squaremetres in size and cost EUR 1.23 million. TheCanton of Basel-Stadt made a contribution ofEUR 582,000 towards the investment.

Transport

As at the other playing venues, great importance isattached in Basle to public transport links.The sta-dium has its own railway station (320-metre plat-form), where both suburban and inter-city trainsstop. There are also direct connections to the tramand bus network run by the municipal transportauthority. Basle main station is situated three kilo-metres west of the stadium.The excellent publictransport links mean that when the stadium is fullit is possible for all the spectators to embark incomfort on their homeward journey via publictransport within one hour of the match ending.The Basle-Mulhouse international airport is 10kilometres away.Sufficient parking spaces can be made available forEURO 2008. The stadium has its own under-ground car park, with 700 parking spaces (2 levelsbelow ground). There are additional parkingspaces in the St. Jakob Hall storage area and at the

St. Jakob car park.Other large parking areas can beaccessed by means of shuttle buses.

Financing

The whole new complex was financed by invest-ments totalling CHF 220 million.The main part ofthe stadium investment was borne by various Swisscompanies (Winterthur Insurance, Swiss AccidentInsurance Institute) and a pension fund. No signif-icant amount of public finances was invested in theconstruction, but the responsible office issuedownership of the land with building rights. Thestadium is being refinanced via its multifunctionaloutlets, which will be rented out at prices in keep-ing with the location. A management companywill take charge of the stadium's operations. Thiscompany will assume responsibility for organisingand co-ordinating all activities to make sure thatthe infrastructure is exploited in the best possibleway. It guarantees that operations are cost-effectiveand is responsible for maintaining the stadium.

The Swiss capital and seat of the Swiss government, has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritagesite, as the city's architecture has remained practically unchanged for centuries.Thanks to its traditionalsandstone buildings, historical towers and eleven unique fountains, Berne is one of the most attractiveand prettiest examples of medieval city architecture in Europe. Berne, the city of encounters, has muchto offer.Anyone who has visited Berne once is always happy to return.


The Wankdorf football stadium in Berne is famousfor having staged the 1954 World Cup final be-tween West Germany and Hungary. In terms offootball history, it therefore became a legendary lo-cation for many fans, particularly in Germany.Theold stadium was demolished in August 2001 and isnow being replaced by a new multifunctional con-struction that is due to open in 2005 at the latest.The new stadium,which will also house commer-cial properties, is situated 3 kilometres east of thehistoric centre of Berne. It has an athletics stadiumon its northern side, school and residential build-ings to the west and south, and a large open greenarea ("Allmend") to the east.


The stadium construction is included in theBerne-Wankdorf development plan.This develop-ment plan is a joint exercise between the city andCanton of Berne, the districts of Ittigen and Os-termundigen, the Berne exhibition centre (BEAbern expo) and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).The

planning project forms part of the promotion ofthe area as a location for exhibitions, sport, leisure,congresses and jobs.

Stadium operations

The new Wankdorf Stadium belongs to the newgeneration of multifunctional stadiums.When fully complete for EURO 2008, the stadi-um will seat more than 42,000 spectators. Con-struction started in August 2001.The structure ofthe stands in the western, northern and easternparts of the stadium allows for an increase of seat-ing capacity to the level required by UEFA for thestaging of quarter-final and semi-final matches ata European Championship.The operational and organisational aspects of theoverall complex are fully in line with UEFA re-quirements.The arrangements for security, opera-tions, dressing rooms and media are designed tooptimise each function and, thanks to the addi-tional space available, can be easily adapted to thespecial requirements of EURO 2008.Although the football stadium is equipped for theneeds of staging international football matches, it

can also be used for large-scale events such as con-certs and popular sports festivals.The stadium itselfand its additional commercial uses are separate en-tities and can be exploited without any mutual in-terference.The objective of the project, apart from giving thesuburb of Wankdorf a well-equipped football sta-dium, was to provide an urban, living centre forthe community.The stadium square connects theexisting suburban residences with the open greenarea and at the same time is the focal point for allsorts of uses, including sports events, a shoppingcentre, VIP rooms, restaurants, schools, offices,service industries and flats.A large, transparent,multi-storey entrance hall willconnect the stadium with the shopping centre.The shopping centre will cover a large surface area(17,000 m2), will include around 30 retail outletsand a COOP Super Center, and will be connect-ed by escalator to the parking levels.To increase the attractiveness of the stadiumsquare, all the services, exhibitions, restaurants andentrances to the shopping centre, offices, school,etc. are grouped around the square. The stadiumsquare is the centre of the development and, to-gether with the stadium and the shopping centre,can be used to stage large events.The two schools and the offices are accommodat-ed in a four-storey building to the south of the sta-dium.This, together with the cantonal administra-tive building on the opposite side, completes thegeographical arrangement. All the entrances arelocated in the stadium square.

Transport

Great importance is attached to public transport inthe area around the Wankdorf Stadium.The stadi-um can be reached by two existing public trans-port routes (one bus line and one tram line) and anew suburban railway station is also due to be inoperation by 2008 (approximately 300 metresnorth of the new stadium complex).The Wankdorf area has its own motorway junctionand links up with the motorways to Zurich/Baseland Geneva.The motorway slip roads are approx-imately 400 metres north-east of the stadium.Sufficient parking spaces can be made available forEURO 2008.The stadium will have its own un-derground car park, with 800 parking spaces.Ad-ditional parking space (multi-storey car park with

2 parking levels and space for 720 vehicles andthree parkings with space for 1600 vehicles) isavailable in the immediate vicinity of the stadiumon the site of the BEA bern expo exhibition cen-tre. Access to extra parking space at more distantlocations will be available via shuttle buses.International transport connections are providedby the nearby Berne main railway station (3 km)and the easily accessible Berne-Belpmoos airport(15 km).

Financing

The land required for the construction is ownedby the community of Berne and is being madeavailable with building rights.Construction of the stadium is guaranteed mainlyby the commitment of private investors.The sta-dium will be refinanced via the multifunctionaloutlets,which will be rented out at prices in keep-ing with the location. A management companywill take charge of the stadium's operations.Thiscompany will assume responsibility for organisingand co-ordinating all activities to ensure that theinfrastructure is exploited in the best possible way.It guarantees that operations are cost-effective andis responsible for maintaining the stadium.The stadium project (including multifunctionaluses) is being financed to the tune of CHF 300million by Credit Suisse,COOP and the Swiss Ac-cident Insurance Institution (SUVA).

The city

Geneva – smallest big city in the world

With its splendid setting on the shores of Central Europe's largest lake, Geneva exudes charm. Its ex-tensive concern for humanitarian causes is just as characteristic for the city as its cultural events, confer-ences and trade fairs.The Lake Geneva region has about 1 million inhabitants, more than one third ofwhom are from abroad. People from 157 different countries live there and enjoy the city's internation-al nature.Approximately 200 governmental and independent organisations, including the European of-fices of the United Nations (UN), are based in Geneva.


Geneva Stadium, the new home ground of thelong-established FC Servette club, is currently un-der construction and is due to open in March2003. It is located on La Praille estate to the westof Geneva, approximately 4 kilometres from thetown centre.The stadium is part of a multifunc-tional complex with a conference and leisure cen-tre, a shopping centre and a hotel.


The entire La Praille complex was designed toserve as a new meeting place to the west of theRhône metropolis. It will therefore have its ownbusiness centre on the same site.The stadium willseat more than 31,000 and the shopping andleisure centre will contain 70 shops, covering a to-tal surface area of 32,000 m2.The stadium and theshopping centre will be linked by an additionalbuilding, which will consist of a hotel and variousconference and office facilities.The three buildingswill surround a large, traffic-free square,which willbe an ideal meeting place.

The La Praille site borders on the Swiss FederalRailways track area to the west/north and thehighway from Geneva city to the airport to theeast.

Stadium operations

The new Geneva Stadium will be one of a newgeneration of multifunctional stadiums in Europethat also includes Basle, Berne and Zurich stadi-ums. Its architecture was inspired by the world fa-mous, classical football grounds in England. How-ever, unlike the English stadiums, the GenevaStadium will have amenities for more than justfootball. It will also be equipped with a highlymodern infrastructure that can be used for con-certs, shows and festivals.The stadium itself and itsadditional commercial facilities will be usable in-dependently of one another and without any mu-tual interference.The operational and organisational aspects of theoverall complex are fully in line with UEFA re-quirements. The stadium will have more than30,000 covered seats, as well as 22 VIP boxes (seat-ing 10 each) and 1,500 corporate seats.The facili-

ties for security, operations, dressing rooms andmedia have been designed to allow them to fulfiltheir respective functions in an optimum mannerand, thanks to the additional space available, can beeasily adapted to the special requirements of EURO 2008.The stadium complex will also include a panora-ma restaurant, TV studios and a number of VIPboxes.The stadium's own three-star hotel will havemore than 100 rooms.

Transport

As part of an urban development project in therapidly expanding west of Geneva, the GenevaStadium complex benefits from optimum accessconditions:

• The stadium is located near the Geneva bypassmotorway exit and Cornavin railway station. Italso has direct tram and bus connections.

• Geneva main railway station is approximately 3kilometres from the stadium.

• The stadium is situated only 15 minutes (3kilometres) from Geneva International Airport.The airport offers direct scheduled flights tonearly 80 international destinations, as well asover 100 conveniently scheduled transfer-flights. It has its own rail connection to Gene-va main railway station and to the venues ofBasle, Berne and Zurich.

• Sufficient parking spaces can be made availablefor EURO 2008.The stadium will have its ownunderground car park,with 950 parking spaces.Access to more parking spaces at more distantlocations will be made available using shuttlebuses.

Financing

The entire new complex is being financed by in-vestment totalling CHF 250 million.The stadiumitself will cost CHF 93 million. Most of the fi-nancing is being provided by Credit Suisse and Jel-moli chain store. The public sector (federal gov-ernment, canton of Geneva and city of Genevaand the local community of Lancy) is supplying afurther third. As with the other new stadiums inSwitzerland, Geneva Stadium is being refinancedvia the multifunctional outlets,which will be rent-ed out at prices in keeping with the location. Amanagement company will take charge of the sta-dium's operations.This company will assume re-sponsibility for organising and co-ordinating allactivities to make sure that the infrastructure is ex-ploited in the best possible way. It will guaranteethat operations are cost-effective and will be re-sponsible for maintaining the stadium.

Stade de Vidy training centre is next to LakeGeneva, south-west of Lausanne city centre. Fromthe teamhotel, the Lausanne Palace & Spa Hotel,in Lausanne itself, it is only 5 minutes away by bus.The training centre is 66km from Geneva Stadi-um, 60km from Cointrin airport, 93km fromWankdorf Stadium in Berne and 94km from Belpairport in Bern.

Next to the main training ground (108.2m x60.5m with floodlights), which has a fence andhedge around it, there are five further trainingfields (all about 100m x 60m), three with sufficientfloodlighting. The complex is equipped withdressing rooms, restaurants (in and around thesite), covered tribunes for more than 1'000 specta-tors. There is are parking spaces for approx. 200cars and 6 coaches.

Just 6km away from the Stade de Genève and 3kmfrom the Cointrin airport, lies the training centreof Meyrin. From there it takes 10minutes to theteamhotel "La Reserve" (Geneva-Bellevue). Thevenue in Berne is 150km away.Basically the training centre is split into two stadi-ums.The Bois-Carré training centre's main train-ing field (100m x 60m with floodlights) has an un-covered tribune for 500 spectators and a mediatribune (30 seats covered). It also has a Buvette for80 people (convertible into a conference centre), afully equipped office and a club restaurant. Fur-thermore there are three grass pitches (two have

floodlights) and one artificial turf pitch withfloodlights, all surrounded by fences. Eight chang-ing rooms, each for 22 people (all with 8 showers)and two changing rooms for referees are integrat-ed in the clubhouse.There are parking spaces for500 cars and 60 separate for players and officials.The Stade de Vaudagne has two pitches. Next tothe main pitch, there is a further pitch with flood-lights and a fence. This stadium has 4 changingrooms with showers, a sauna and a changing roomfor referees. It also has a buvette for 40 people. By2008 a whole new stadium complex will be builtat the centre Bois-Carré with at least six grasspitches and one artificial surface pitch.The Stadede Vaudagne won't be in use then any more.

Geneva Stadium and Gene-va airport are approximatley 100km away andWankdorf Stadium in Berne 80km away.

The training centre is on a hill amidst magnificentscenery.The main pitch (105m x 68m with flood-lights) has a track around it. Next to the mainpitch, there are two further training pitches. Thechanging room facilities are adequate.A big sportshall with larger and more modern changing facil-ities is in the pipeline and will be ready by the endof 2007.

The sports centre,1.000m above sea level, is to the west of Bienne bycar.Distances to the venues: 46km to Berne, 92kmto Basle, 118km to Zurich and 175km to Geneva.The airport in Basle-Mulhouse is 115km andZurich airport 125km away.The centre, which was already used by the Braziland the Swiss team at the World Cup 1954, has aswimming pool (open and covered) as well as sev-eral saunas. There are excellent doctors, physio-therapists and massage experts available in thissports science institute, which is equipped accord-

ing to the latest medical knowledge.Macolin has atotal of seven pitches. The main pitch and threeother grass pitches are all 105m x 64m.The otherpitches are sand and artificial turf. Mobile tribunesand fences can be put up (i.e. as Juventus Turin wastraining here). There are eight changing roomswith showers next to the pitches and a further 10changing rooms with showers are within 300m.Press conferences can be held in the teaching fa-cilities (20 classrooms), which are all equippedwith the latest multimedia facilities.The complexalso contains a restaurant, a cafeteria and othercatering facilities.There are parking spaces for 400cars and 30 coaches.Various other sporting facili-ties are available around the complex.

Rankhof training ground is just outside of Basle,close to the German border and right beside theriver.The teamhotel, the Radisson SAS Hotel inthe middle of town, is a bit more than five minutesaway.A ten-minute ride will take you into the city

of Basle. In addition, the international airport ofBasle-Mulhouse is just 25 minutes away. From thetraining ground, the distance to Zurich interna-tional airport and to Zurich Stadium is the same(87km = 1 hour).Rankhof training centre has seven traininggrounds: the main pitch (100m x 64m) in a flood-lit stadium, a tribune and space for 7.600 specta-tors, six all 100m x 64m (four with floodlights),and one smaller training pitch (90m x 57m).Thewhole area has a fence around it and the stadiumcan be closed separately.There are two restaurantswhich can accommodate approximately 80 peo-ple. Parking spaces for 60 cars are available andthere is a drop-off zone for coaches (the latter canalso park in the car park).

Schützenmatte training centre is in the heart ofBasle, 6 minutes from the teamhotel, the RadissonSAS Hotel. It is also not far from St. Jakob-Park inBasle (4km) and the airport Basle-Mulhouse(30km). It takes just over an hour to reach the ven-ue in Zurich and to the international airport,Zurich-Kloten.The main training pitch is 100m x 64m and has atrack around it, and the whole complex has 5 ex-tra training pitches (four 90m x 55m, all withfloodlights).The Stadium has floodlights too and it

can accommodate 11.700 spectators (1,995 seat-ed).Walls surround the stadium to keep unautho-rised people out of the ground. Sufficient parkingspaces (approx. 100) are available and there is adrop-off zone for coaches. Furthermore, the stadi-um complex has got dressing rooms (all with 6showers) for two teams and referees, a first aidroom, a doping control room, catering facilities,TV- and radio cabins, a press conference room aswell as an interview room. It is equipped with sur-veillance cameras, telephone lines and a score-board.Moreover, it has good public transport con-nections.

The venues in Zurich andBasle are 1 1/4 hours and 1 hour 20 minutes awayrespectively.Zurich's international airport is 87km(1 hour 20 minutes) away.There are four different, easily accessible trainingpitches on Lake Lucerne.The main training pitch(104m x 70.3m with floodlights) has got a club-house with a tribune (400 seats), and there are 3

further training pitches: the first (90m x 65m) withfloodlights, the second (90m x 65m) withoutfloodlight and the third is an all-weather pitch(40m x 40m) with training floodlight. A 2.5mfence surrounds the whole complex. There are500-600 parking spaces, four spectator entrances(two with ticket sales), access for wheelchairs andtwo large entrances for trucks. Furthermore thereare 6 changing rooms (players, referees) all withshowers, one big first aid room, plenty of toiletsand two large shoe cleaning troths.There is a kioskwith a bar and a grill, and a restaurant close to thetribune. Plans are underway for a site extension,which will open in 2008.
