Citizens 2 CentsBy Zoë Lorenz-BoserBentley Coffee News Discussing the state of the Bentley arena with members of the community.

“In a perfect world, where money was no object, of course a new facility would be wonderful. But - the reality is, those funds are not available - not from the Municipality not the Provincial and Federal governments. Town Council and administration have worked very hard to keep our current facility in the shape that it is in. A new roof, both to the curling rink and the arena, was installed...an electric ice resurfacer was purchased...upgrades to the washrooms and dressing rooms were done. With some of these improvements, dollars also had to be spent for “background” improvements – for example, a charging station for the re-surfacer. Yearly maintenance is also undertaken. I am not convinced that a new arena/recreation facility would contribute to economic growth in Bentley...Visitors continue to come to our community and when their children are playing hockey or curling, they visit the businesses in the community.,”-Lynda Haarstad-Petten, Mayor of Bentley

“[The Bentley arena] is pretty cold, like extremely cold, because when you’re trying to play and your nose, you don’t feel it, and you can’t feel your toes, it’s not comfortable. I just think it needs improvement. It needs to be warmer and the ice needs to be better. It's cold and the ice is kind of hard and brittle...and I think the bleachers need to be painted to make it more attractive again. No [I don’t think these improvements will help the town grow], but I think it will make the rink better.”-Geran Christiansen, Goalie, AA Bantam West Central Tigers

“[The Bentley arena] needs improvement. It’s too cold. It is, have you been in that rink? It’s freezing. By the end of your practice your nose is frozen, your ears are frozen, your toes are frozen, your fingers are frozen, and your water bottle...by the end of [practice] you can’t drink it anymore because it’s all frozen. It’s like all ice. That’s how cold it is...Well, you would have a chance of getting the Generals back (but probably not) if you improved the rink, made it not as cold, made the ice conditions better, and made it so more people came out to watch, I think it probably would [grow the town],”-Easton Moore, Assistant Captain, AA Bantam, West Central Tigers

“[The arena] needs improvement a lot. It’s an old facility and just needs to get better. You would think [it] being rebuilt would probably help the town, but I don’t know if there’s enough money...You would think in theory maybe a new arena would attract more people, but I think sports is kind of lost its [appeal]. Now with all of the video games people would rather do that. Hockey is maybe a bit more challenging so video games are fairly easy so I think more kids are attracted to that than maybe sports.”-Kyle Gerrits, Captain, AAA Minor Midget, Red Deer TBS Chiefs

Canadian Politics Crumbling CBCAustin SieboldBentley Coffee News

At the Conservative leadership debate on November 9, Kellie Leitch declared her opinion that, “the CBC doesn’t need to be reformed it needs to be dismantled,” based on the idea that “taxpayers should not have to subsidize the CBC to keep it afloat,” She did, however, say the parts that provide emergency services to remote and urban parts of Canada will be maintained.

Other conservative leadership contenders suggested reforms to cut the $1.1 billion in subsidies it receives from the Canadian government. Maxime Bernier stated on the issue, “I do believe there is still a role in our media landscape for a public radio and television network, but it has to be something other than what the private sector offers,” He also claimed he would review spending for the CBC to reduce it to under $1 billion per year.

American Politics What do Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania Have in Common?Austin SieboldBentley Coffee News

The states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania have supported Democratic candidates for president since 1984, but this year supported Donald Trump by fairly narrow margins. All of these states are also being looked at for a voting recount based on the possibility of the voting machines being hacked. These recounts are being driven by Jill Stein and supported by Hillary Clinton.

The Wisconsin Election Commission announced on November 25 it “is preparing to move forward with a statewide recount of votes for the President of the United States,”

Obama’s administration is defending the results against the claims of hacking, saying, “We stand behind our election results, which accurately reflect the will of the American people,”

Donald Trump has called this investigation a “scam,” and tweeted, “In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,”

Regardless of the various opinions the Presidency could be taken away from Trump if the recount in Wisconsin turns out in Clinton’s favour, and if similar recounts are approved in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Clinton lost by 22 177 votes in Wisconsin, 10 704 votes in Michigan, and 70 368 votes in Pennsylvania, which are close margins, considering that there were millions of ballots cast in each state.

Meeting Nickie Hislop, Owner of Bentley’s Newest Business: Body TalkBy Austin SieboldBentley Coffee News

Owner of Body Talk, Nickie Hislop, sits down with Bentley Coffee News’ Editor, Austin Siebold, to discuss her new business, her target audience, and the services that Body Talk offers.

Austin Siebold: So you run the Body Talk Health & Wellness, what types of things do you offer here?

Nickie Hislop: We have a variety of things that we offer; we do blood typing, which will help determine your blood type and then we talk about you eating for your blood type, if that’s something you want to do. We also have a young living scan, that will determine what oils will be beneficial for your body. We also have a nature sunshine scan, that talks about what supplements could be beneficial for your body at that time. I also do a nutritional microscopy, where we do live blood and dry blood education. We also have all of these supplements.

AS: What brought you and your business to Bentley?

NH: Well, my family and I have lived around Bentley since August of 2005, so quite a long time. When I did my nutritional microscopy, my husband didn’t want me to do it out of the house, just because he didn’t want strangers coming to the house. We just looked for a building that we could use in Bentley, and since we are close to Bentley, this was the easiest option. I have two kids that are older, and they will sometimes come after school and help out, they are excited. That’s exciting for me too, to see how excited they are to come and work, and do stuff with the business.

AS: What’s your target audience or demographic that you’re hoping to offer services to?

NH: I don’t know if I really have a target, just people who are interested in the natural health field.

AS: Is there anything you’d like to say to people who haven’t heard of the Natural Path field and what it offers?

NH: Well, the Natural Path is a little bit different than my line of work. I wouldn’t call myself a Natural Path. We call ourselves Nutritional Microscopists, because we talk to people about their nutrition. A lot of issues that we see in the blood have to do with their nutrition and them not eating right for their blood type. So I don’t believe there’s a right or wrong way, it’s just whatever you personally choose. If you personally choose this versus the other routes, then that’s totally up to you.

Bentley Garage (4941-50 Avenue) Was originally built by Frank and Percy Thorp after the 1916 fire destroyed their first garage. They had the North Star Oil Agency and sold Overland and Willys-Knight cars. The Thorps generated electricity from here to service some residents of Bentley. Upon retirement, Wilfred Thorp and Eugene Blish succeeded Frank and Percy Thorp. They were followed by Bill Peterson. Ian Martin bought Bill Peterson out in 1943 and changed the name to Bentley Motors. Ian also bought the North Star Oil business from Frank Thorp. In 1949, Lawrence Greif moved to Bentley and joined Elmer Calkins in a school bus operation that Elmer had previously established. Elmer and

Lawrence purchased this garage from Ian Martin which included a Dodge sub dealership and an oil agency. In later years, Elmer became the sole owner of the garage. Elmer and Lawrence decided to install gas pumps out front. To do this, one of them got some dynamite and proceeded to lay the charge. The partner was skeptical and wanted to know if the dynamite expert knew how to handle the explosive. He was assured there would be no problem. His partner thought that they should cover up the glass front. The dynamite expert ensured all would be fine; he knew what he was doing. After all was set, the dynamite blew. After the air cleared, all of the windows in the front of the shop were broken. Needless to say, the glass expert had to pay for the damage out of his own pocket. Lawrence Greif passed away in 2012 at the age of one hundred years. Mr. Coatta was the next operator and in 1956, Walter Schnelle purchased the garage. Alvin Snow teamed up with Walter and they operated Donelle Motors. Alvin and Winter started out as Dodge and DeSoto dealers, but then switched to Pontiac and Buick. They also sold North Star products, Goodyear and Shell, and also oil and gas. The building was put to other uses in the following years. In 1970, Niel Rietema used the building as a storage building for his business. Derek Dickau purchased the property and operated Bentley Agencies in the front of the building. The back was leased to various businesses: Turnbull Plumbing, Lorne Elliot, Al’s Garage, and the Car Clinic. Bentley Agencies built a new building in 1993; the old building was sold to Doctor Roger Giesbrecht in 1994. Roger currently operates the Bentley Chiropractic Health Centre. -Adapted from Bentley Historical Society 2005. Bentley, A Gateway Through Time. Red Deer: Prolific Graphics, 2005. Print.
