PowerPoint in the Classroom

PowerPoint can serve a variety of purposes in the classroom.

1. Outline a presentation

2. Highlight key points and topics

This presentation has already demonstrated two

of those uses:

Page 12: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

PowerPoint in the Classroom

PowerPoint can serve a variety of purposes in the classroom.

3. Integrating digitized images including clip art, photographs, diagrams, schematics, maps, etc.

4. Providing a platform for Internet hyperlinks.

5. Creating WebQuests and movies

Other uses are:

The possibilities are endless.

Page 13: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

PowerPoint in the Classroom

We are now going to look at some examples of different ways that

PowerPoint could be incorporated into instruction.

Be sure to ask questions along the way about any of the

features, animation, graphics, and so forth that you see…

Page 15: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

PowerPoint in the ClassroomIn the Newton’s First Law PowerPoint,

graphics were used in a variety of ways:

1. The picture of Gabe was taken using a digital camera and uploaded to the computer. Then the file was inserted into the slideshow.

2. The pictures of Newton and Einstein were found using Google Images and Clip Art. I used Copy and Paste to insert the pictures.

3. The equations illustrated in the slideshow were created using the Equation Editor that comes with the Office Package.

The following PowerPoint slideshow demonstrates how PowerPoint can be

used to create WebQuests.

The activity was used as part of a review regarding

the atomic nature of matter.

Go to the WebQuest

Page 17: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

PowerPoint in the ClassroomA WebQuest can be a great learning activity for students. Notice that the

WebQuest had several key things:

1. Links in the presentation that the students can directly click. Creating a hyperlink in PowerPoint is really easy.

2. Clear, step-by-step instructions.

3. This particular WebQuest also used a Word document to accompany the activity. This is optional, but it adds an additional technology kick to the activity.

Page 18: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

The following PowerPoint slideshow demonstrates how PowerPoint can be used to integrate video into a lesson.

The Tacoma-Narrows footage deals with wave

motion.

Go to the Sound Presentation

Page 19: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

PowerPoint in the ClassroomWith the availability of streaming video and other Internet resources, it is really

easy to add video clips to a presentation.

1. Video can provide the students with a visual experience about the subject your are discussing.

2. In the Tacoma-Narrows clip, it is difficult to really envision the movement of the bridge through just a verbal description.

NOTE: The main disadvantage of video is the size of the clips. Video can make a PowerPoint very

large.

Page 20: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

PowerPoint in the Classroom

PowerPoint has many excellent features that can be used to enhance learning in the

classroom.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, PowerPoint can add

dimension to your class.

Now…we are going to practice some PowerPoint skills.

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

How can technology enhance learning?

1. Enhance the productivity of collaboration among students.

2. Encourage more participation and more contributions to a class.

3. Increase equity in the classroom.

According to Kuh and Vesper (2001), technology can:

Page 35: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

“Used appropriately and in concert with powerful pedagogical approaches, technology

is supposed to enhance student learning productivity. It does this by enriching

synchronous classroom activities and providing students with engaging self-paced and asynchronous learning opportunities that enable students to learn more than they

would otherwise at costs about the same as or below that of traditional classroom-based

instruction” (¶1).

Kuh and Vesper (2001) state:

Page 36: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

Hutchens (2006) states:“Studies have found that integrating

technology into the classroom creates a rich, effective, and efficient learning environment which improves student performance and

learning” (¶1).

Page 37: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

How can technology enhance learning?

1. Verbal information can be processed through auditory memory while visual information can be processed through visual memory.

2. Technology can be used to appeal to different learning styles.

Chambers, Chueng, et. al. (2006), relate how visuals and multimedia can assist learning:

Page 38: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

How can technology enhance learning?

3. Multiple representations can increase retention and transfer of information.

4. Multimedia establishes multiple pathways to understanding and comprehension.

Chambers, Chueng, et. al. (2006), relate how visuals and multimedia can assist learning:

Page 39: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

How can technology enhance learning?

1. Provide excellent learning opportunities for students.

2. Are relatively easy for teachers to locate.

3. Can teach students about assessing media.

Worsnop (2006) suggests that technology can:

Page 40: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

Language Arts – Analyze online texts for accessibility, bias, and objective language

History – Analyze how media influence history and current events

Science – Analyze different resources for information about ecological and conservation news

Music – Look at how music is influenced by TV and radio

The following ideas are suggested by Worsnop (2006) for a variety of different content areas:

Page 41: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

How can technology enhance learning?

1. Administrators and teachers are learning that “the technology assisted environment expands the implications of learning practices and theories, and offers educators a large arena for imaging, planning, and creating a variety of ways to enhance the quality of learning” (¶2).

Li and Liu (2005) conducted a study dealing with using the online environment in the classroom:

Page 42: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

How can technology enhance learning?

2. The study focused on the Online Top-Down Modeling Model of instruction using technology. This model “refers to the use of model projects or samples online to involve learners and facilitate active participation in learning activities” (¶5).

Li and Liu (2005) conducted a study dealing with using the online environment in the classroom:

Page 43: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

The steps include:

supporting stronger accountability for results

increased flexibility and local control

expanded options for parentsan emphasis on teaching methods

proven to work.(National Educational Technology Plan, 2006).

Page 46: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

The National Education plan was created to help local schools

district meet the demands that the No Child Left Behind Act has set.

The Department of Education provides a set of seven action steps and recommendations to

ease in the transition to the new model of education:

What about newly trained, technologically literate teachers?

Mary Anderson (2005) suggests “catching” them early:

1.They love technology and are well trained in educational pedagogy, but they’re not sure how to integrate these together in the classroom.

2.Media or technology specialists should seek these teachers out at the first orientation and let them know what resources are available to them.

Page 54: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

What about newly trained, technologically literate teachers?

Mary Anderson (2005) suggests “catching” them early:

3. New teachers and technology specialists can “build a bridge to instructional partnerships” (¶2).

4. New teachers can become role models for the more experienced teachers because of their excitement, enthusiasm, and technological knowledge.

Page 55: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating

Research Supporting the Use of Technology in Instruction

What are the implications for educators?

1. Students need to be encouraged early on to learn about and use technology.

2. Appropriate forms of IT (Information Technology) need to be made available for all students.

3. Schools need to be aware of how students are using technology and how IT affects student learning.

According to Kuh and Vesper (2001):

Page 56: STAFF DEVELOPMENT Integrating Technology into Classroom Instruction Designed by: Christine Campbell Mike Dillon Martin Lawrence Jeff Pierce CMP 521: Integrating
