Staff Development Unit Title: What is a Wiki? Designer: Dottie Barrow Audience: Kindergarten through 8 th grade teachers at St. Simons Christian School Time Frame: Two lessons Resource link : http://sschris tianschool.pbworks.com/Fron tPage Summary of the Unit: In this staff development unit, teachers will learn what a wiki is, some valuable uses of wikis that have been created by others, and how to create, edit and link web pages to a wiki that they create thems elves. Teachers will be ins tructed on some ways to use wikis in the classroom that will enhance instruction and aid in communication and collaboration. At a time when finances are a primary concern for all everyone, including educators, it is helpful to be aware of some of the many free technologies that are available and appropriate for the educational setting. Wikis fit both of these categories and are a technology that can be beneficial to both teachers and their students. Learner Analysis:  The learners include the entire staff of kindergarten through eighth grade teachers at St. Simons Chris tian School. There are 10 females in th e group, with experienc e ranging from 10-18 years. All grade levels of the school are represented (K-8 th grade). There is some level of comfort with technology. None have heard of a wiki.  Stage 1-Desired Results Establishe d Goals: To implement ISTE-NETS-T Standards: 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning  Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representa tive of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers: a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation c. communicate relevant informati on and ideas effectively to students , parents and peers, using a variety of digital-age media and formats d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning 5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership:  Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstra ting the effective use of digital to ols and resources . Teachers: a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning b. exhibit leadership by demonstra ting a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making, and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others c. evaluate and reflect on current research and professiona l practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning d. contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and their school and community.
