Northern Ireland Anti-Homophobia and Transphobia Week 2014

The Equality Unit within the BSO is responsible for Equality, Diversity and Human Rights within the BSO and its client organisations across the Health and Social Care Service.

The Unit works with BSO colleagues and client organisations to promote and facilitate best practice in diversity and inclusion and assist those organisations in meeting their statutory equality obligations.

An important part of the job is keeping in touch with colleagues in the third sector, where a range of expertise across equality strands has been developed. Staff within the Unit meet with and engage a range of organisations, on behalf of client organisations, to stay on top of emerging equality issues to ensure that their clients get the most up to date advice and best practice guidance.

Each year in May, Northern Ireland celebrates Anti-Homophobia and Transphobia Week and this year staff from the Equality Unit attended the launch of the week, which featured a calendar of events, many of which were directly relevant to the Health and Social Care Sector, such as an Adoption and Fostering event for lesbian, gay and bisexual people and an event exploring person centred care for older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Staff should note that a forum which provides a safe and welcoming space for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people working within health and social care currently operates with the aim of creating an inclusive environment, and improving wellbeing.

Staff that would like to join the confidential mailing list should email [email protected] or visit http://www.lgbtstaff.hscni.net/ for further information.

Anne McCormick, HSC leadership Centre and Elaine

Keheely, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

Celebrating our Coaching success with our Customers

The HSC Leadership Centre’s Anne McCormick and Paul Comac were delighted to join with the Belfast

Trust in receiving an Outstanding Achievement Award for Coaching Excellence at the Irish Institute of

Training Development’s National Training Awards on 7th March 2014. The application was one of

twelve from across Ireland.

Anne McCormick said, “Paul and I count it a privilege to collaborate in building coaching capability with

the largest HSC Trust in Ireland. We had a lead role in designing the Coaching Framework and

developing the first group of internal coaches using the ILM Level 5 Coaching qualification. Coaching is

a learning conversation with outcomes valued by the individual and the organisation.”

“We are pleased to acknowledge the great work of the Belfast Trust. Through the development and

implementation of a multi-faceted Coaching Framework, the Belfast Trust has established an in-house

register of accredited coaches, access to coaching across all staff groups and coaching skills

programmes for line managers.” – Association for Coaching, IITD awards

The HSC Leadership Centre is continually learning and developing the coaching we have on offer. We

want to increase the visibility, understanding and impact of coaching. If you want find out more about

coaching, please contact Anne McCormick at [email protected] or visit our website

Community Relations Week 2014

Each year Community Relations Week sees a series of events celebrating good relations in Northern

Ireland rolled out. It is an opportunity to showcase the great work that goes on quietly all year round to

build and sustain relationships. It is a time to celebrate the ethnic and cultural diversity of our

community and the many imaginative ways in which we are building a shared cultural region.

The theme of this year’s Community Relations Week is Building a United Community.

Each year a series of events across Northern Ireland is organised by voluntary and community groups,

District Councils, schools, libraries and other public bodies. Community Relations Week is packed with

great examples of the united community that is being built all around us right now. Most of the events

are open to the public.

Events across Northern Ireland are organised across council areas, including BSO Office areas, such

as Armagh, Ballymena, Derry and Belfast.

These range from celebrations of world culture featuring workshops, performances from schools and guest artists in Ballymena to a wide programme of activities will be held over two days covering good relations, health and wellbeing and community involvement in Armagh.

The full series of events can be found at the Community Relations Council website (http://

www.community-relations.org.uk/about-us/community-relations-week-2014-16th-22nd-june/).

Forthcoming Board Meeting

The next meeting of the BSO Board will take place on

Thursday 26 June at 2:00pm in the BSO Boardroom,

BSO Leadership for Success Initiative

If you want more information about BSO programmes email [email protected] Participants commented on aspects of the programme which they found most useful to them in their job role, how they could use their learning at work. See these highlighted below. What was most useful for you? Great programme helped me understand about different personalities that you have to interact with and adapt too.

Time out to think and revaluate. Considering who I am and how I manage myself. What I can do better, how this will help me to work more effectively in my team .

Self-learning and awareness / emotional intelligence and Conflict management Recognising different leadership styles and how others through life have had a positive or negative effect on developing and moulding the person you are today.

I found getting others people’s perspectives on what has shaped their leadership style and what drives/motives them.

Discovering a range of leadership styles and the particular attributes of each, will be useful in the workplace as I already feel more confident that I can adapt my style to gain the maximum from each potential member of staff.

How will you use the learning or material? I will report back to my team on what I learned, what we do well and what we don’t. I will share my

learning. I know more about leading my Team and feel more confident now. Application in day to day work, as reference points and for discussions with staff. To bring back to my team to help improve working relationships. Try to re-evaluate working relationships and review how I communicate with certain colleagues. Reflect on my approach to others As part of my appraisal I need to think what’s next for my personal development plan I know more about change and service improvement tools that can support me – sometimes we need

fresh ideas and need to involve others. Any overall comments you would like to make? I think this course should be compulsory for all managers I am going to use my new skills and

knowledge to look at my work area and make some improvements. Very beneficial and relevant course. Tutors both very engaging and encouraged participation with

group work and activities. Excellent content and delivery would highly recommend the course. Would highly recommend to other staff. Very enjoyable and will help me in my job I feel confident and

able to manage change better.

The final cohort of the ‘Developing your Leadership potential’ programme was completed last month. This programme was attended by both BSO and PHA staff (see picture below of celebrations after completing their Change Improvement presentations at the Leadership centre).

Dementia Awareness Week 2014

“Don’t bottle it up” is the message from health

and social care professionals this week during

Dementia Awareness Week 2014. (18th-24th of

May)

The Public Health Agency and Health and

Social Care Board are working jointly with the

Alzheimer’s Society, the Dementia Services

Development Centre and local Health and

Social Care Trusts to implement Improving

Dementia Services in Northern Ireland. This

regional strategy aims to promote a culture

which ensures people with dementia are

supported to live with dignity and without stigma.

Eleanor Ross, Nurse Consultant with the Public Health Agency, said: “People can find it difficult to talk

about it when they think that they, or someone close to them, may have dementia.

We would encourage people to open up about worries they might have about their memory and to

seek help as soon as possible.

By talking openly about dementia and its impact on daily life people, family members and carers can

begin to access the practical help and support available. Timely diagnosis allows people to receive

treatment and care which enable them to live independent and fulfilling lives. Early diagnosis and

support also enable people to plan for the future and to make their own decisions about their care.”

Seamus McErlean, Commissioning Lead for Older People and Adult Services at the Health and Social

Care Board said: “Often people are reluctant to seek help with memory problems as they feel that

nothing can be done. Through the implementation of the Dementia Strategy investment in memory

services provided by local Trusts ensures individuals can avail of assessment and referral onto

appropriate care services.

“Statutory health and social care organisations are working in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society

and the Dementia Services Development Centre to make the public aware of the supports which

promote independence and support families and carers. These include supported housing, care at

home, lifestyle advice and information on local support groups. It is vital therefore that we encourage

people to open up and have the confidence to ask for help.”

The principle of supported living and promoting independence are key principles which support the

delivery of the recommendations of the Transforming Your Care Review (2011). These represent a

radical change to how and where health services are delivered in communities through a shift of

service provision, moving care out of institutions and hospitals and into the community.

If you, or a member of your family, have concerns about Alzheimer's disease or about any other form

of dementia the Alzheimer's Society Dementia Helpline 0300 222 1122 can provide information,

support, guidance and signposting to other appropriate organisations.
