April 2014

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome once again to our Academy Newsletter. I am delighted to be writing to you at the end of an extremely busy and exciting half term, packed with lots of fantastic learning and enrichment activities which have greatly benefitted our students!

Within this edition of the Academy Newsletter, you will find information on:

Our World Book day, which saw every member of staff dress up for the occasion. All staff chose a character from a book and some were able to choose their favourite character which required extraordinary effort in hunting down some very weird and wonderful costumes. Many students joined us in the activity and were equally as adventurous. Opportunities have existed over this last half term, for students to attend subject booster sessions through collapsed days, after school and indeed Saturdays. Large numbers of students have been attending these sessions. The interest has been so good, that the Academy is now looking to further extend the Saturday school very soon. We will update parents in the near future.

On the subject of exams themselves, mock exams enable us as an Academy to target the support and interventions required between March and May to ensure students have the best chance of success. Therefore, it is vitally important that students understand the importance of mock exams and try their very best.

Can I finally, take the opportunity to wish everyone a fantastic Easter break. I look forward to sharing more fantastic news with you all next half term.

The 6th of March was a day of great fun and excitement at the Academy as we celebrated World Book Day! Students and staff took part in a fantastic celebration of reading by dressing up as characters from literature and participating in workshops with published author John Rice and illustrator John Byrne.

Prizes were awarded for the best costumes and the day was a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to talk about the different books that they have been reading.

World Book Day has really added to the buzz that has been building about reading at the Academy and personally, I cannot wait for it to come around again next year!

The winners were:

Year 7: Jodie Smith (Queen of Hearts)

Year 8: Edward Catchpole (Mortal Engines)

Year 9: Davina Wilkinson (Where's Wally)

Year 10: Alex Sealey (Miss Havisham)

Year 11: Sian Maybury and Victoria Cole (Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum)

Year 12: Alex Nutting (Snape)

Year 13: Daisy Summerfield (Alice in Wonderland)

A message to all Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 students ...

The exam season is very nearly upon us. There are many resources available to help you prepare, such as revision lessons, past exam questions and papers and several websites. Make use of as many of these as you need.

If you work well online, then the following sites could be useful to you:

www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maths/

www.mymaths.co.uk

(note the username is ‗suacademy‘ and the password is now ‗multiple‘)

Planning your revision sessions well is vital and is easier if you are working towards specific dates. With that in mind, make sure the following are written down somewhere:

Year 11: Non-calculator paper on 9th June; Calculator paper 13th June.

Year 12: Core 1 on 19th May; Core 2 on 22nd May; Mechanics on 6th June.

Year 13: Mechanics on 6th June; Core 3 on 16th June; Core 4 on 18th June.

Intervention sessions

In order to give students the best possible exam preparation, revision sessions have been scheduled after school, twice a week, to ensure that everyone has a chance to attend.

The sessions will include a chance to work through past papers, focus on specific topics and make revision aids.

You can also bring along questions you have been stuck on in homework or class and get one-to-one help with them.

Here are some quotes from pupils who have attended so far:

―It gives me a good chance to achieve my target grade!‖

―It gives us time to practice exam questions and to ask lots of questions.‖

―It makes me revise more than I would at home.‖

Well done to Katie Rushton and Harriet Bubalo who have attended every week so far!

And finally, just for fun …

A little logic puzzle to keep your brains active:

Put each of the numbers 1 to 8 into the grid so that there are no lines joining consecutive numbers.

This half term after school in Science Year 11 students have been working hard preparing for their BTEC Science examination and completing their assignments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Attendance to the Thursday afterschool support sessions has been excellent; well done to all of those involved in classes 11Ar, 11Ne and 11Xe.

Thanks to all of the Science team have worked hard to deliver and support those sessions. Also a big thank you to all of the parents/carers of students in 11Kr and 10x1 who attended sessions in February half term to complete their controlled assessment ready for the Core Resit exam in June. We wish you every success.

A Science Tribute to World Book Day

Classes at Staffordshire University Academy were suspended for the day and replaced by new and improved classes such as Potions, Defence against the Dark Arts and Care of Magical creatures as part of the Science contribution to World Book Day.

Inspired by the Harry Potter novels by J.K.Rowling, students were able to make sparklers and Slytherin slime whilst visitors to Miss Orange‘s lab were able to get up close and personal with a number of Ravenclaws‘ reptiles including snakes and a bearded dragon.

Even the Science corridor got a full make over and took on a spooky appearance with the sixth form using their Science skills to apply filters to all of the lights to give various eerie colours, topped off by cobwebs, skulls and cauldrons that gave out a strange fog!

Miss Boot doubled up as the Quidditch teacher for the day winning second prize in the students nominations for best dressed staff member.

Year 7 ‗Cell‘ebration of Hard Work!

Year 7 students were asked to produce models of plant and animal cells as part of their Biology assessed homework. They were given one week over the half term holidays and the project involved them using what they had learned in lesson to make a 2D or 3D model of a cell, describing what the different parts of the cell are called and how they help the cell to function. The results were amazing I‘m sure you will agree!

Eggs-traordinary Space Project in Science Club

Inspired by the Mars Rover scientists in Science Club were challenged to build and construct a lander to deliver an astronaut safely to the surface of a planet.

At first they had to learn about the Science of forces on falling objects. Then they could select the materials and create the best design to protect their eggy astronauts, fondly named Neil ‗Eggstrong‘ as a tribute to Neil Armstrong one of the first astronauts to land on the moon.

Students then had to use their initiative and source the materials from all of the departments and staff around school in order to construct their lander. The final design was then put through a rigorous testing regime as they were dropped from the 1st floor of the Academy onto a target below. Not all of the ‗Egg‘stronaughts survived the hard landing but never the less a great deal of fun was had by all with Year 9 Scientists winning the challenge overall and taking home the Crème eggs!

Science Community News — Running for Rewards!

As a regular runner, Miss Boot has completed several events from 5k to marathons, so when Mrs Gregory signed up for her first half marathon she knew exactly who could help with the preparation and support on race day. Having recently lost a family member to cancer, it was clear how important the Rennie Grove staff were in supporting patients with life limiting illnesses in their final days.

The half marathon was an excellent opportunity for the whole Academy to come together and raise funds for this worthy cause. As a late entry Mrs Gregory had just 4 weeks to prepare and not being a runner it was the support of the students and staff that really kept those legs moving on the day.

The final results were Miss Boot completed the 13.1 miles in 1hr 57mins, Mrs Gregory a respectable 2hrs 15mins and the best result of all a sum total of £133.61 from staff and students towards the Rennie Grove donation pot.

The final total including donations from family and friends totals a massive £500. Thanks to our help many more families will receive this valuable help and support.

Art, Craft and Design in SUA Sixth Form is great. You get as much or as little help as you want. With each new unit you can add your own spin to make it individual. It‘s amazing to see how each piece differs depending on the viewpoint or media, even though some have the same theme.

I started SUA Sixth Form a month later than everyone else as I went to College to study BTEC Level 3 extended diploma in Fine Art. I soon realised College was not for me as I felt I did not receive enough support or guidance.

But here at SUA, the teacher is there to support you, but also encourages your independence, you‘re not told what to do every step of the way and being able to express your own thoughts and ideas is important. Art, Craft and Design is a fun course, it does require a lot of time and effort but it always pays off! Chloe Lawton Year 12

Art, Craft and Design A Level at Staffordshire University Academy:

You get your own individuality throughout the course.

If you enjoyed GCSE Art and Design then this course is perfect.

You work independently but if you need help it‘s there.

Great spacious room for any type of Art, Design or Craft work you want to do.

No limits to the size or scale of work you want to create.

Fantastic views! Georgia Kilgallon Year 12

Art is a relaxing, calming but hardworking subject that always strives for the best outcomes. You must be prepared to invest your extra curricular time and your full effort and ability into the subject to succeed. Believe me the end result is well worth it. Each piece of work you create, whether a painting, a drawing or annotation will require good time management. This subject generously rewards those who strive to be the best and push themselves to the limit. I can safely say that from this subject I have learnt that if you fail to prepare, then you should prepare to fail. Connor Richards Year 12

Recent visit to meet Luke Thomas, Pancake day and hosting an event.

The Catering Department recently took some year 11 and 12 Students to meet the Manager, Colin Rooney, Head Chef Luke Thomas and Sous Chef Johnny Prince at Lukes Dinning Room which is located in the beautiful Hotel called The Santum on the Green. Here is what some of our Students had to say; ‖We were given the opportunity to go and see the next Jamie Oliver! Luke Thomas the youngest head chef in the country. We went down to his beautiful restaurant ‗Luke‘s Dining Room‘ in Marlow. It was a fantastic experience to lighten our thoughts in the catering industry. We had the chance to ask questions and find out all about Luke and his career. Luke demonstrated different kinds of dishes to us sixth formers and some year 11 catering students. We watched him make new salads to put on his spring menu. It showed us that we can experiment with different foods to make one amazing dish. We also had the chance to try pigs head, which was actually really nice even if we did see the pigs head beforehand. We saw Luke and Johnny, which was the sous chef, use different techniques and methods in their kitchen. To finish a brilliant day off we got a signed menu off Luke and a group picture outside his restaurant. Everyone really enjoyed the day out in Marlow and learned a lot from it‖.

Lauren Moore Year 12

―Our fantastic teacher Mrs Jordan gave us a brilliant opportunity to go and see the Britain‘s next Jamie Oliver, Luke Thomas. It was a fantastic trip! We visited the sanctum on the green hotel near reading where we tried some of Luke Thomas lovely food. He cooked little dishes for us such as duck salad and coq ua vin. We also tried pigs head which Mrs Evans enjoyed! Luke showed us that very simple ingredients could be used to make extremely tasty dishes. We learnt from this trip that it is very hard work to be a top chef. You do have to be organised but if you have passion for cooking you enjoy it. The trip also got us to think about how to run a business and how important it is to communicate with in a work place‖.

Lewis Gosling Year 11

Here at the Academy, we have been very excited to mark the start of Lent with Pancake day. Students got to work in teams to prepare and cook pancakes. We had lots of fun, tossing different pancakes and eating them with many different toppings. The students then complete literacy and numeracy tasks connected to Pancake making to practice different skills.

The students at the Academy have also helped host a Germany themed meeting at the Academy for parents. The meeting gave information on the History visit to Germany that will take place next year. Key Stage 4 Students prepared, cooked and served a range of different German canapés using a range of different skills and techniques. Students then greeted parents and students and served them a range of different dishes. Students gave up their own time to take part in this after school event so a big thank you to Adam Bridgart, Lewis Gosling, Chelsea Murphy and Amy Parrish.

Child Development Curriculum News

GCSE Child Development

Students in Year 11 who are studying Child Development have been working hard on their three short tasks and Child Study Task.

The Child Study task has required them to carry a series of observations on a small child and then to rec-ord their findings. One of the students has recorded this on video and this will be a useful addition for evidence. Most have now completed part of their short tasks and will now be working on their report which encompasses all their research work and findings.

The Students have also been working hard in preparation for their exam in the summer term shortly by completing a mock exam.

Booster Sessions

I am available Monday from 3.05 to 4.05 for anyone who wishes to come along to do any extra work.

Well done to Amelia Hinder who has so far attended both sessions.

Jackie Edwards - Teacher of Child Development

Year 10 GCSE Religious Studies Trip to Chester Zoo

We had an amazing time at the zoo. Year 10 GCSE Religious Studies students visited Chester Zoo so that they could learn about the threats to animals, both here and abroad.

It was a real eye-opening experience to see the range of animal parts that people try to smuggle into Britain through our airports and ports.

Students were able to handle items such as a tortoise‘s shell to items made out of ivory, including a real tusk. The most ridiculous item, I feel, was the half rhino horn. Apparently these are brought into the Country to be used for cures for a range of diseases. As the horn is made out of keratin, this is like trying to make somebody better by giving them nail clippings!

We were informed about how animals are endangered by pollution. Our students were given a range of items and asked to get into a line, showing how long they thought it would take for them to degrade.

The scariest fact we were told was that a disposable nappy could take 450 years to break down.

The best part of the day was being able to see the animals, our favourites were the monkeys, the lions and the zebras.

Safer Internet Day 2014

This year‘s theme was 'Let's create a better internet together', offering the opportunity to focus on both the creative things that children and young people are doing online, as well as the role we all play in helping to create a better internet.

Safer Internet Day is organised in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre in February of each year to promote the safe and responsible use of online technology and mobile phones for children and young people.

Many students are currently studying how digital media is used by young people. This involved weekly diaries to calculate the amount of hours spent online.

One of the key findings from Year 9 was the diverse nature of technologies now being used to access the internet. These included mobile phones, PC, Smart TV, Tablets, games consoles and even smart watches. Activities were held across the Academy where young people had the opportunity to reflect on their own ‗Digital footprint‘ and celebrate what they enjoy about the internet.

Digital Media

The new digital media course has required students to take an in-depth look at how the technology used to access content such as news, magazines and sport is changing.

Media students have enjoyed the opportunity to experiment with emerging technology such as Augmented reality. The Aurasma App was used on an iPhone and iPad to show how content can be made more captivating.

Lead Learner Showcase

Year 9 have been busy developing their skills using the professional Adobe CS6 software for their final assessment. Many students have produced high quality videos, animations and graphics with consummate ease.

Joshua Groves has been managing his team to create an original comedy magazine full of a brilliant jokes and videos. Joshua has been awarded Lead Learner this month for his outstanding commitment and willingness to continually improve. Joshua is pictured here with a clown image that was produced using Adobe Photoshop.

Opting for Product Design at A-Level

This has been the first year that our current Year 12 students have done the AQA 3D Product Design course. To help those who are currently in Year 11 when considering their options, here are a few of the students views from the year so far:

―Product Design is a brilliant subject to choose at A-Level. The projects you do give you loads of independence and since you are given more time, there is a big window for creativity. At GCSE I studied Graphic Design but this hasn't held me back at all. The theory aspect of Product Design is challenging but since it is split 50/50 with coursework, it‘s a nice balance. I highly recommend this subject, it is fun, creative and a great ticket into university since it displays a wide range of skills. ―

Alex Nutting

―Product Design is by far my favourite A-Level that I have chosen in Year 12. The project that we have worked on has enabled us to show individuality and show different skills‖.

Megan Smith

―Product Design is a great subject for you to be creative and let your ideas flow. At GCSE I did Graphics but I have had no problem in moving to A-Level Product Design. Product Design is great for making your ideas come to life. It also gives you the chance to learn about different processes and materials‖

Chloe Lawton

―I have really enjoyed Product Design this year, I have learnt a lot of new skills whilst doing the course. What is great, is that the course has been adapted to meet the needs and wants of the students. We have made a model of a shop which is of our choice. This gives you the opportunity to explore ideas and your knowledge and creative skills to design‖.

Rebecca Barmer

Preparing Year 8‘s for GCSE

Over this term students in Year 8 have been asked to design a photo frame that is inspired by a design movement. This has been great for developing their drawing and communication skills. By researching different design movements, students have been able to show how they can be influenced by their research.

One fine example of this is Ryan Tipton‘s drawings which he proudly shows in this photo. Demonstrating that you can use research when designing is a key skill needed at GCSE Product Design, so the students in Year 8 will feel more prepared when starting the Product Design course next year.

―We tell the world how it is, was and could be‖

Another busy half term draws to a close within the Geography Department. With World Book Day, students in Year 7 and Year 8 were challenged to write a story using a geographical scenario. Some students chose to be explorers trekking through the Amazon Rainforest while others decided to journey over the Sahara Desert or dive into the Pacific Ocean. There were numerous fantastic attempts including stories written by Joe Hinder and Sophie Horvat.

Year 8s have been busy beavering away, preparing and completing their work on World Development. They were challenged with a creative task to represent world inequalities in a poster format. There were some fantastic pieces of artwork and special congratulations are sent to Amrit Wraich, Ellen Perry and Chloe Barmer, who all created some outstanding posters. Well done to all Year 8s for your fantastic attempts! The Year 8 group are now beginning their project work on life in Kenya. They will focus on exploring life within two tribal groups; the Kikuyu and Maasai. They will then be able to make comparisons between life in Kenya and the UK.

Currently Year 9 students are busy working on a mock controlled assessment in preparation for the real attempt in Year 10. They are using the same topic that the present Year 10 group are studying. Both year groups are looking at coral reefs and how they are threatened by human activities. The students will need to decide on the best management techniques in order to ensure that all stakeholder needs are met in the best possible way. There are some promising pieces of work in the making and some excellent research skills have been developed. A special well done needs to go to Chloe Baker. Chloe Barmer, Faye Harvey and Callum Harley who have worked exceptionally hard throughout the research phase.

Year 11 are working hard to ensure all elements of the course are completed and there is a final push for students to ensure that they develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of all the topics.

The Department are running intervention sessions on Mondays and Fridays after school as a period 6 session and also have notified parents of revision sessions that will be taking place during some weekends and the Easter holiday.

BTEC Health and Social Care

Year 9 Students have looked at alternative communication methods and have managed to produce work showing how Braille, Bliss Symbols and pictures are used to help people with different disabilities to communicate.

Year 10 Students have also been studying different communication methods and have recently enjoyed making a Mother‘s Day Card using Makaton symbols. They have all now started on their first assignment in Communication and are currently producing a leaflet on alternative communication methods which the students are working hard at.

Year 11 Students have been looking at hazards in a Health and Care environment and how risk assessments can help to eliminate or reduce the hazard. They will be producing their own risk assessment on an indoor space as part of their assignment. We are hoping to work with the catering Department where they can assess good practice.

Year 12 have been working on Anatomy and Physiology for Health. They have been researching on how the body systems reacts to exercise by testing their own candidate and recording and analysing their findings. This has been helped by the acquisition of blood pressure monitors and various other equipment that has enabled them to take temperature readings.

Year 13 are now learning about why children are looked after both for short term and long term reasons. This is a sensitive topic which is being covered with maturity by the students.

Purchasing new equipment for the Department has enabled the learners to have a ‗hands on‘ experience on the types of equipment that is routinely used for jobs in the Health and Social Care sector. They have enjoyed the experience and gained valued knowledge on blood pressure and temperature readings.

Now on the look out for a hospital bed and pulley. If anyone can help will be much obliged.

Dance Project The Your Beat dance project was set up with funding from Public Health, with which Hannah James (Dance Specialist) was commissioned to work with Schools and collaborate with dance leaders. The project has been running from January 2014 and will culminate in two performances/workshops with local primary Schools in April. The girls work as part of an after school dance group learning various street dance routines, furthermore prepare their own choreography/routines to teach within the session. The project also communicates through a Your Beat Facebook page where all the participants share ideas for routines, discuss the sessions and is an open forum to share information on dance in the area. Students from all year groups in Staffordshire University Academy have joined together to create some exciting dance work and all commented on how much they have enjoyed working with new people and learning new routines. At the start of Sixth Form we had the same PE kit as the rest of the Academy, this did not separate us from the rest of the school. Our sport group wanted a new kit that was different to show that we were part of the Sixth Form sport group.

Our entire sport group have said positive things about the new Nike kit, that it is smarter and more comfortable. The kit is a navy blue, Nike polo shirt, with navy blue, Nike shorts. Along we white sport socks, the shorts and the shirt includes the academy badge as well. This kit is ideal for when we represent the academy because we can be easily recognised as Sixth Form sport students.

Girls Futsal

We have been fortunate enough to have a Gemma Turner from Staffordshire FA come in and do some football coaching aimed at girls from years 7-10. This club started on Monday 3rd of March and will continue to run every Monday until the end of the school year. We have had some keen interest from different year groups with attendance increasing each week. We have girls attending that have previous experience in football along with girls that have never played before so it is great to see everyone from different experiences of football having a go! It is also a great opportunity for the girls to make new friends as they will be mixing with girls from other year groups.

Trip to the All England Badminton Championship

On Wednesday 5th March Year 13 BTEC Sport students visited the All England Badminton Championships at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham. Pupils are currently completing a unit looking at performance analysis so the trip allowed them to observe elite performers close up. On the day we were fortunate enough to see some great action including many Olympic medallist's from London 2012. The pupils were taken back by the athleticism of the players and the standard required to compete at the very top level. The knowledge and insights gained will prove valuable as they prepare to finish the unit and course. A trip is already being planned for next year.

Year 9 Basketball District Champions.

A huge well done to our Year 9 Boys Basketball team who won the District Championship on Wednesday 12th March. The team played two tournaments to reach the finals winning all their games on route and maintained their 100% record in the final tournament of the year beating Cardinal Griffin, Chase Terrace and King Edwards VI, Lichfield. They are developing well as a team and have played some fantastic attacking basketball this year.

Congratulations to Tom Lockley, Callum Lockley, Jake Thomas, Jack Green, Kurtis Jones, Keelan Smith and Brad Rotchell. Great team work and a fantastic result.

Team 16

As part of our partnership with Staffordshire FA we have been selected to run a new FA initiative called Team 16. Team 16 aims to create informal opportunities for pupils to play football and is run by sixth form pupils. Reid Elsmore and Alex Onion in year 12 have taken on responsibility for the initiative organising sessions each Friday after school since Christmas. Sessions can be organised for boys or girls in any year group and can take many formats, from a traditional league to playing football to music. If you would like to take part and have a idea for a session see Alex or Reid to sign up on a Wednesday break in the Hall or speak to a member of PE staff.

Learning Mentors Curriculum News

Well done to all the students that have accessed the Learning Zone for extra support this half term and also well done to those that continue to do so. Don‘t forget, the Learning Zone is open at lunchtimes to all year groups with access to help from the Learning Mentors.

It is great to see so many of you taking the initiative to get extra support and guidance with forthcoming exams fast approaching. Whether it is break, lunchtime or a period 6 remember we are here to help and support you in order for you to reach your full potential.

During this half term, the Mentoring team had the chance to take part in World Book Day (6th March 2014).

We enjoyed dressing up as our favourite literary characters and seeing so many students also using the opportunity to dress up as their own favourite characters. I chose to dress up as Alice in Wonderland as that was a childhood favourite of mine. Miss Gaston chose Mary Poppins, Miss Berger picked Katniss Everdeen and Ms Outerbridge came as Jordan Baker from The Great Gatsby.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable day and we are all looking forward to many more World Book Days.

Please remember, if you do wish to come in at break or lunch time you need to collect a pass from us at the beginning of the day.

Ladies and Gentlemen its show time!

Staffordshire University Academy proudly presents…

The show had really came together in the last few weeks and the students professionalism, dedication and commitment is outstanding. Progress Centre Curriculum News

It has been an exciting month in the Progress Centre as we were chosen to test drive a Promethean ActivTable.

Promethean ActivTable is a multi-user interactive table designed to promote student collaboration, engagement and student led learning. An intuitive touch interface, similar to a table or whiteboard, allows up to six users at once to access a wealth of educational activities, tools and resources.

Housed in Progress Centre 2, pupils trialled the ActivTable in small groups. Some pupils used the ActivTable in lessons as a learning centre for targeted small group instruction and peer to peer learning. Others utilised the table as a social and pragmatic device in breaks and meet and greet times; using the apps to develop communication with peers and collaboration.

―It‘s really fun,‖ said Jamie Ward, Year 7. ―On my computer you can only use it with two people, but on the Table you can do it with more people and do the problem solving in groups.‖

Staff also enjoyed using the Table. Mr Ryder ―particularly liked how the table fostered group led decision making and included all the children‖. Mr Andrews was also spotted trying to play all of the available instruments.

The Progress Centre is really excited that we may be able to house one of these in the future as it really promotes inclusion for all, across the curriculum.

If you would like to receive any further information, or you have any queries about our provisions, please do not hesitate to contact either Mrs Haffie-Hobday on 01543 334197 or Mrs Palmer on 01543 334400.

Public Services Curriculum News

As Public Services is coming to the end as a subject. The Majority of the students are finishing the last Unit or improving the previous Units trying to ensure that they achieve their target grade.

Some students especially in Year 12 and 13 are attending the intervention group on a Thursday after school. However, as well as the identified students attending the club the club is open for all students who have Public Services as a subject.

This term it has been useful for the Year 12 and 13 students to meet and chat to the Public Services in terms of what they need if they want a career in the Police or the Fire brigade. This opportunity was organised by Mr Andrews.

Noticias Españolas—Corresponsales Españoles en Sevilla!

Year 9s have been putting their literacy skills to good use this month by writing letters in Spanish to send to pupils at the I.E.S. Velázquez (a secondary school) in the heart of Seville, Spain.

We hope that the letters will be the start of a successful partnership between the two schools, being of invaluable support in developing each others language skills and really bringing the language to life.

We are all very much looking forward to receiving our first replies! Then we are likely to ‗up tech‘ to email correspondence going forward: once we have had a look at how different Spanish handwriting is to ours!

Key Stage 4 Spanish students are also looking forward to our trip to Manchester to the Art House cinema ‘Corner House‘, on Manchester‘s Oxford Road for a GCSE Spanish workshop.

Students will watch an Argentinean Film about a Family‘s road trip across the Country, then will participate in a workshop on the film, conducted in Spanish, which will led by the Head of Spanish at Manchester Metropolitan University.

During collapsed timetable days this term Key Stage 3 students have researched about various different celebrations that take place throughout the year across Spain, such as the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Las Fallas in Valencia and Carnival in Cadiz & Gran Canaria. Research culminated in presenting their findings to their peers.

Many students could not believe the weird and wonderful celebrations

that take place in Spain. Any excuse for a celebration and a fiesta!

Hasta Pronto

Basketball Tournament

On Tuesday April 8th primary schools were invited to take part in a basketball coaching session and inter primary tournament. This proved to be a great success.

15 year 5 students were invited from 4 primary schools and were given some coaching around basketball techniques from our Year 11 sports leaders. They then went on to enjoy an inter primary competition which was great fun.

Lets hope that it will be just as successful next year and we look forward to making it an annual event on the calendar!

Dance Tuition

This year we had the opportunity to take part in some free funding for dance tuition -

Hannah James came to work with students from the Academy. Students from all year groups in the Academy have joined together to create some exciting dance work.

The students had the opportunity to work with primaries and show some of the routines that they have learnt. Two primaries wanted to take part in this opportunity and our students attended Westhill primary on Monday 7th April, Year 5 students from Littleton Green attended the Academy on Wednesday 9th April and took part in a Dance tuition workshop. All commented that they had a great time and learnt a lot.

High Fives

High fives Maths and English is still going strong. Students are thoroughly enjoying the sessions and there are plans next year to expand them further and include some library work.

Year 8 Pastoral News

Year 8 Pastoral News

We have had a very busy and interesting term so far, made even better by the fact that Year 8 boys can now get out during breaks to play football, they are so happy!!!

A huge thanks to all those parents/carers who have attended Pathways and Parents Evenings. It‘s nice for me to meet you all and to see how supportive you are of those in your care. I hope you found the evenings informative which will then enable you to support your son or daughter make the right choices for study. I have to say that time does fly by and before we know it, we will be preparing for our final exams. It only seems like yesterday that I went through the same process with my previous year group.

I hope the transition into Key Stage 4 will be an easy one with all students studying subjects of their choice.

We have had numerous ‗collapsed days‘ where we have been able to take part in trips to the Imperial War Museum, have fun on inflatable apparatus as part of Sport Relief, experienced tasters in readiness for our GCSE studies and team building exercises, where I had the pleasure of seeing you all work very well together in your tutor groups.

The Accelerated Reading Programme is going well in Year 8, thanks to all those staff who support us with this and also the Year 9 Peer Mentors who visit tutor groups in a bid to improve our reading. There have been some huge leaps in performance with Jake Ellis and Daisy Povey making massive efforts, well done to you both.

Year 8 students who are part of the History Club that meet after school, put on a very informative and enjoyable performance about Jack the Ripper. It was so nice to see students on stage who would not normally be brave enough to do so. I‘m not sure whether I got the answer right when we were asked our opinions of who Jack the Ripper was— did anyone really know?

Jacob Wells and mum supplied enormous amounts of cake, a huge thanks for all of your effort. It kept a lot of people happy!

A reminder about attendance and that the Academy target is 95% and above. If you need to discuss attendance with me, please call me. I am always happy to listen and help with ways in which we can work together to improve the situation.

The launch of our new Behaviour for Learning Policy has been a bit of a challenge for some students in Year 8. We have to work to reduce the amount of Consequences that we accumulate throughout any one week. This can only happen if each and every one of us take the system on board and make it work to enable us all to learn and work towards achieving our goals. Now is the time to get it right before we start our studies in Key Stage 4. If you need help, please speak to your Tutor or come and see me.

On a final note …….

I‘m sure you‘ll agree that when the sun shines we all feel a lot better. I have my fingers crossed that the Easter holidays will bring with it some nice weather and I can chill out in the garden reading one of the many books that I plan to read. Please have a restful holidays and take the time to recharge your batteries.

Stay safe and enjoy.

PSHEE Day

PSHEE day took place on Friday 28th February 2014. Year 10 were tasked with using their entrepreneurial skills to invent a realistic, cost effective and innovative idea to promote the local area and attract visitors to the area, focusing around Cannock Chase.

Students worked in teams to research, plan and cost their idea‘s and then they had to present their ideas to the whole year group in an end of day assembly which was judged by Mr Evans and other members of the Senior Leadership Team.

The winning team were 10MR, pictured here with the Principal, who‘s idea was a 5 star camp site set on Cannock Chase. Our big thanks go to all at Entrust for putting on such an informative day.

World Book Day

What a fantastic day this was, all staff got involved and the activity was received really positively by the kids.

I joined the rest of the Pastoral team by dressing up as a Disney Princess - Snow White! But I couldn't resist the opportunity of having a photo taken with Michael Lycett from 11MC who came as the fantastic Woody from Toy Story!!!

Our future GB Gymnast!

It‘s been a while since I shared a story from our fantastic Year 11‘s so please enjoy reading a little article from Loren Bradbury who is a very keen gymnast.

―I have been involved in Acrobatic Gymnastics from the early age of 7.

I have competed in many regional championships, competing against other clubs in the West Midlands. I have only recently became a base, as I have competed as a top.

Just the other weekend I competed in the West Midlands championships in a Grade 3 trio as a base and I came first! After this I have now qualified for the BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS!, where I will be in competition with Spellbound! This is my first opportunity of competing at the British Championships and I honestly cannot wait, all my hard work and dedication has paid off!‖

Finally I will wish all of Year 11 a very lovely Easter holiday, please make time for revision, because those life changing exams are literally 2 weeks away. Good Luck.

Year 12

As always it has been a very busy time in the sixth form at

the Academy. We have recently taken all of Year 12 on a

visit to the University of Birmingham to provide them with

additional information about applying to university and to

raise aspirations amongst our students. A fantastic day

was had by all and students came away buzzing about

applying to university and the opportunities this pathway

can provide them with.

Year 13

Year 13 have been awaiting countless university offers. At

present all students who applied to university have

received offers from a variety of Russell Group

Universities and other established and successful

universities. It is very pleasing to see that several of our

students have had offers from our sponsor ―Staffordshire

University‖ and are keen to study there. The number of

students applying to university is much higher this year

and it is a testament to the academic success of our

students and the teaching and learning that teachers are

delivering to them daily. Students have applied for a range of courses such as English, History, Teaching,

Physics, Art, Interior Design, Archaeology, Sport and Sports Coaching. We are confident that with their

hard work and effort, and thorough revision for future exams that our students do indeed have a fantastic

future ahead of them. For those students who are not wishing to move onto university we are preparing

talks and visits from employers and providers of apprenticeship schemes.

Year 11 into Sixth Form

We have now met with all Year 11 students for an Information and Guidance interview. Many of our

students have expressed a desire to continue their education at the Academy and join our sixth form. It is

equally refreshing to hear that this year we also have external applicants who wish to join a successful

and ever improving sixth form. All Year 11s who have applied to the Academy will receive an offer letter

prior to the Easter Holiday that details the subjects they have applied for. There will be further sixth form

related activities ahead such as a welcome day and university visit/s.
