BRIEFING PROJECT 4
BA Hons Interior Architecture & Design:
Integrated Design Principles DESN22063
Project 4: Realisation & Prototype (50%)
The Context
This is the fourth studio project of level two of the course. The module will be delivered through
one project which is of 15 weeks duration. This brief outlines the work to be undertaken in the
module and should be read in conjunction with the module specification.
This module will enable you to explore a design proposal in detail and in particular develop an
understanding of materials, finishes and detailing at scales from 1:50 up to 1:5.
This project has been developed to enable you to understand and integrate the issues of
accessibility into your design work, with the avoidance of the design being destroyed or driven by
regulations.

The Brief
In many cases design consultancies have a brief that does not align to any particular site, and
therefore they need to produce a concept which could, in effect, work in any location. As long as theend user and their needs are understood, then a concept may be considered as appropriate.
You are required to develop design proposals for a shop which sells the followings:-
Handbags (Travel bags/laptop bags)
Footwear (Ladiesshoes/Sportshoes)
Swimwear & Accessories (Man/ Woman)
Organic Food (Perishable/ Non-perishable eg. dry food)
Eyewear/ Watches
Couture Wear (Man/ Women - Bridal, Traditional Costumes)
Toys (Collectable, General according to age group)
You are required to create/identify aparticular brand or type ofproduct that will be sold in the
shop and then articulate the organisational diagram to provide an appropriate environment for the
products to be sold from. The development of the design in detail will involve the following:
Type ofproduct to be sold
Product display system
Seating
Treatment of building fabric (floor, walls ceiling)
Incorporation ofgraphicsasappropriate

Project 4(Part I) : Realisation
SUMMARY OF STAGES REQUIREMENTS
Stage One INVESTIGATION (Project 4(Part I) : Realisation)
You are required to select a type of products that can be categorised in some way.Depending upon your approach you may develop a design proposal that displays one manufacturers products only, many
different manufacturers versions of a similar type of products or lots of different manufacturers versions of lots of
different products that may be suitable for a particular customer.
Stage Two PLANNING CONCEPTS
Following your tutorial you should select and develop the proposal further. To do this you should investigate three different
ways you could approach the design of an interior for that product. You can work at scale 1:100 to 1:50.
Stage Three DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
At this point you should have a strategy for how the site functions that is articulated not only in terms of the detailed
organisation of the site, but that has an agenda for materials selection and use, the selection, manipulation and application
of graphics and colour, and for the lighting of the different areas.
You should be looking at how these elements can be applied into the context of the site and work with the selected spaces
at a scale of1:50 through model and drawn form.
Stage Four DETAILED DESIGN (Project 4(Part II) : Prototype)
You are required to select a particular aspect of your scheme and develop this part at scales from 1:10 through to 1:5.
Stage Five PRESENTATION
You are required to present your proposals showing your work from the initial stages through to the final prototype. You
are required to show your work at scales from 1:50 through to 1:5 and use colour in the presentation. Your presentation
should include models at a variety of scales (as appropriate) and between 4 to 6 A2 sheets.
Date ofstages ubmission may be subject to change due to certain circumstances.Always check the update with your module leaders.

Project 4(Part I) : Realisation
Stage One INVESTIGATION
You are required to select a type of products that can be categorised in some way. The category may be
defined in a number of ways such as the following:-
BRAND PRODUCT TYPE CUSTOMERrenowned designer Handbag Male/Female
Sport Shoes Male/Female
Swimwear & accessories Male/Female
Organic Food - Perishable Families
Eyewear Male/Female
Couture Wear Bridal Male/Female
Toys Children /Adult
Depending upon your approach you may develop a design proposal that displays one manufacturers products
only, many different manufacturers versions of a similar type of products or lots of different manufacturers
versions of lots of different products that may be suitable for a particular customer.

BRIEFING PROJECT 4
ContStage 1
In the initial weeks you are required to develop your understanding of the product/category thatyou have selected.
You are required to make a presentation in the tutorial that demonstrates your understanding of
the products and the implication that this may have on an interior design proposal. This should
cover issues such as the following (and more think!):What is the product / category?
Who are the customers?
What is the product trying to say?
Is there agraphic identity?
How is the product advertised (and where)?
What materialsare used in the products manufacture?
What conceptual direction could your proposal take based upon what you have learned through
research?

BRIEFING PROJECT 4
ContStage 1
From this research you are asked to produce:
A manifesto for the project which outlines what you consider to be the key points that
your scheme will deal with; think of it like apersonal brief. Thisstatement will be referred
to during the design work that you will carry out for the remainder of the project.
Research and analysis of the product and customer.Site survey and analysis in physical and cultural terms.
All these are to present in A2 Sheets.
