Worksheet 1. The Design Process

Complete the following cloze-passage below

Word Bank: designing , design , folio , clothing , steps , multi-media, process

You will follow the design_____________ throughout this task. The design process is a series of ____________ which help you to think about the task ahead. The design process allows you to break the task down into smaller , more manageable steps. Whenever you are _______________ anything you will achieve greater success if you follow a design process, whether it be a piece of furniture, an item of ____________, a _____________ product like a movie or an architectural model.

Your design process needs to be recorded in a design ____________. For this project your design folio should be contained within this booklet.

Worksheet 2. What is multi-media?

Multi-media is simply the name given to the technology when images, text ,animation , video and sound are combined in different ways for a particular purpose (function).

For example

This poster by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) contains image and text. It is therefore an example of a multi-media product. Its function is to make people more concerned about the problems of overfishing.

Look at the following examples. For each one say what the function of the multi-media product is.

Worksheet 4.

Designing and planning Video and Animation - Storyboards

Whenever you want to do a video or an animation it is very important that you think of the scenes first and think about all the resources that you will need. Eg. A film may need actors and certain props, as well as a camera of course. Animation will not need as much hardware but you may need to download images or take photos to use in the animation.

Planning video and animation is done using a storyboard where you break the video/animation down into scenes and then draw/describe the action in each scene.

An example is shown below.

Describe 3 features of a storyboard:

1. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Extension storyboard activity.

Read the storyboard above and complete the task by creating your own ending. I would expect you to add at least 5 more frames to the storyboard.

Worksheet 5.

Input Devices on a Computer

Input devices are things we use to put information INTO a computer. Here are some examples of input devices. Fill in the missing words

Camera - most cameras like this are used during live conversations. The camera ________ a picture from one computer to another, or can be used to record a short ___________.

Keyboard - The keyboard is a way to input letters or numbers into different __________ or programs. A keyboard also has special _______ that help operate the computer.

Mouse - The mouse is used to open and ________ files, navigate web sites, and click on a lot of commands (to tell the computer what to do) when using different applications.

Digital Camera - A digital camera can be used to take pictures. It can be ________ up to a computer to transfer the pictures from the camera to the computer. Some digital cameras hold a ________, and this can be taken out of the camera and put directly into the computer.

Drawing Tablet - A drawing tablet is similar to a _________ board, except you use a special pen to write on it and it's connected to the computer. Then the word or ________ you draw can be saved on the computer.

Microphone - A microphone is used to record _______. The sound is then saved as a sound _______ on the computer.

Scanner - A scanner is used to ________ pictures or other things and save them as files on the _________.

Worksheet 6. Output Devices

Output devices are things we use to get information OUT of a computer.

Here are some examples of output devices.

Monitor - A monitor is the _______ on which words, numbers, and graphics can be seem. The monitor is the most common __________ device.

Compact Disk/DVD - Some compact disks /DVDs can be used to put __________ on. This is called

_________ information to a disk.

NOTE: A CD/DVD can also be an input device.

Printer - A printer prints whatever is on the __________ onto paper. Printers can print words, numbers, or pictures.

Speaker - A speaker gives you _________ output from your computer. Some speakers are ________ into the computer and some are separate.

Headphones - Headphones give sound output from the computer. They are similar to __________, except they

are worn on the _________ so only one person can hear the output at a time.

Worksheet 7.

Storage Devices in Computing

In the table below list and describe 4 different types of storage device which you could use to save your work and draw the device . Use an appropriate research source to find your information.

Year: 8

Unit: Community Affair

Weighting of the task: 25%

Total Marks:25

Date issued:

Date Due: Monday week 5,Term 4, 2012

Penalty for late submission: 20% of marks deducted for each late day.

WHY am I being assessed?

You have been learning about the 5 digital media types and the tools and techniques used to design and produce digital media. Eg Photoshop , Flash and Movie Maker. You have viewed examples of multi media products and you have learnt what a Public Service Announcement (PSA) is.

WHAT do I have to do?

1. Apply your knowledge by designing an original and creative PSA to inform the viewer about an activity or issue which you are very interested in.

2. Present a design folio which describes the design process you followed. The folio should be written in your own words and should also contain any sketches, diagrams or other images which you think are relevant to the presentation. Use the scaffolded design folio to present your work.

HOW am I being assessed?

You will be assessed on the following things:

1. Your ability to present a quality design folio.
