THE DESIGN PROCESS
The general design process :
1. Recognition of need
2. Definition of problem3. Synthesis
4. Analysis and optimization
. !"al#ation$. %resentation
Recognition of need : Recognition of need in"ol"es the realization by someone that a probleme&ists for 'hich some correcti"e action sho#ld be ta(en.
Definition of the problem : Definition of the problem in"ol"es a thoro#gh specification of theitem to be designed. This specification incl#des physical and f#nctional characteristics) cost)
*#ality) and operating performance.
Synthesis : Synthesis and analysis are closely related and highly interacti"e in the design
process. +n this a creati"e design is planned and implemented in the prod#ct design. The
complete prod#ct is s#b,ected is s#b,ected to analysis and +mpro"ed thro#gh this analysis and
finally redesigned in impro"ed manner.
Analysis and optimization : The impro"ed design is s#b,ected to analysis #ntil the design is
optimized 'ithin the constraints imposed on the designer.
Evaluation : !"al#ation is concerned 'ith meas#ring the design against the specifications
established in the problem definition phase. This re*#ires a prototype model needed to be
man#fact#red for testing against design specifications.
Presentation : This incl#des doc#mentation of the design by means of dra'ings)material specifications) assembly lists) and so on.
+n -AD process ) last fo#r phases of traditional design process are replaced by the follo'ing
phases .

Geometric Modeling : +n comp#teraided design) geometric modeling is concerned 'ith the
comp#tercompatible mathematical description of the geometry of an ob,ect. The mathematical
description allo' s the image of the ob,ect to be displayed and manip#lated on a graphicsterminal. The -AD soft'are pro"ides the
geometric modeling capabilities
Engineering analysis: /or any engineering design) some type of analysis is re*#ired. The
analysis may in"ol"e stress strain calc#lations heat transfer calc#lations) the #se of differentiale*#ations to describe the dynamic beha"ior of the system being designed. The comp#ter can be
#sed to aid in this analysis 'or(.
Design revie and evaluation: +t can be done con"eniently on the graphics terminal. 0ne of themost interesting e"al#ation feat#re a"ailable on some -AD system is (inematics. The a"ailable
(inematics pac(age pro"ides the capability to animate the motions of simple design mechanisms.
Automated Drafting : This is the final stage in the design process. +n this stage the design is
doc#mented in the form of dra'ings.
