'After returniI1g from the state high school track mee1at Long Beach last weekend the same question was askec~ ." ,

~lose to a hundred times.,.What happened to the Northern California~ representa·

tiv,es in the meet?It is not an easily answered question. There are several

reasons for the failure.

Perhaps it's the pressure on north state atnletes appearing in the bigg~st track event of the year. There'spressure. Just ask anyone who competed this year.

IT ISN'T like that for the southern boys. Shucks, theirtoughest meet is the week before in the southern ClFmeet. Better athletes than the north sends are eliminated'in tha~ dog-eat-dog battle.

There's an anticlimactic feeling for ,the survivors. Thestate meet is a pushover.

Another reason is that the runners down in the southare just a little bit faster and 'jump a little bit farther.,

Late in the afternoon, when the pole vault was the onlyevent stYli going, Don Beal of Palo Alto watched ,withinterest. He had cleared 13-0 and just missed at 13-4. I

Out on the track was a lithe jUl~ior from' Glendale. Hewas going for a new meet record of 14 feet. John Rose

'made it too. Beal had done his best but it wasn't goodenough.

THE BROAD JUMP was another event where the bestof the north wasn't good enough. Terry'Baker did betterthan 23 feet but stilI took third place. The winning jump

.wa~ 24-6.John Pastinieks of Palo Alto and Jim Zamlich of Fre~

moi1t, were two other NCS competitors in the broad jump ..4<:imlich was bothered by the asphalt runway that

made it faster on the run up. He had to change his runningdis~ance b~fore jumping.

Pastinieks, looking through the meet pl'ogram on theflight home, quipped, "I would have won the meet in

19~2 with my best jump today."

JOHN WAS RIGHT. That must have been a bad year;for.: the southern boys. Tl).at's about the only time ourenct of the state gets any blue ribbons.

Coach Yorrest Jamieson of Palo'Alto and Father JamesDevlin of Bel1armine figure the extra long season in thesouth has something to do with the vast difference inpelJormance ..

\Vin or lose, all competitors enjoyed thetl'ip and thei

~neet. It's good experience. to compete with the best, evenlIf ,YOU cia 2'et be<'1tl"l1.
