Assembly Instructions
Cut a 15-inch square from each of your tile fabrics (12).
Cut twenty four 1-inch wide strips cross grain from the
grout fabric (generally in black or some dark color for contrast).
Arrange the twelve blocks in a pile with the right sides of the fabric up.
On a 15-inch square piece of paper draw four lines dividing the square into nine sections. The
lines should not be drawn from a corner, nor should they intersect at an edge of a square.
Letter the four lines A, B, C and D as illustrated above and label it as the right side. The paper
square will be used as your guide while cutting the squares.
Cut freezer paper or muslin strip into twelve small squares and number each (1-12). In the
center of the right side of each fabric square baste the numbered scraps of muslin or iron on the
numbered piece of freezer paper (Ive just used a small piece of paper and have pinned it and it
works just fine).
AS YOU WORK #1 SHOULD ALWAYS REMAIN ON TOP OF THE PILE.
FIRST CUT: Fold the paper guide at line A and use it (right side up in conjunction with your 24
inch long ruler to cut each square. BE SURE TO KEEP THE SQUARES RIGHT SIDE UP, IN
NUMERICAL SEQUENCE- WITH #1 AT THE TOP OF THE PILE. KEEP PAPER GUIDE
RIGHT SIDE UP.
Cut twelve pieces of the grout about an inch long than the A line.
Sewgrout strip to each smaller section (the one without the
number)
Press the seam toward the grout.
Trim the grout following the direction of the edges of the block.
Make sure the two sections of each block are still in the same
numerical sequence they were before cutting-WITH #1 AT THE TOP OF THE PILE RIGHTSIDE UP.
SHIFT ONE: Take the section (without the number andwith the grout attached) of the first
square and shift it to the bottom of the pile.
Assemble the sections pinning at the beginning and end to align the edges creating a square.
Press the seam towards the grout.

SECOND CUT: Open the paper guide and fold it at the B line. Making sure the blocks are all
right side up and facing the same way, cut the blocks as you did the first time- WITH #1 AT
THE TOP OF THE PILE. ALSO, KEEP THE PAPER GUIDE FACE UP.
Cut, sew and press the grout as before.
Do not trim the excess grout this time.
Make sure the two sections of each block are still in the same
numerical sequence as they were before cutting.-WITH #1 AT THE
TOP OF THE PILE, RIGHT SIDE UP.
SHIFT TWO: Take the cut section (without the numbers) of the
first TWO squares and shift them to the bottom of the pile-keep them in the same sequence.
Sew sections together as you did the first time. Pin to make sure the existing grout in both
sections is aligned. Do not pin at the edges-the blocks will be trimmed later.
THIRD CUT: Open the paper guide and now fold it at the C line.
Making sure the blocks are all still right side up and facing the
same way they did at the start, cut the blocks as you did the first
time-WITH #1 AT THE TOP OF THE PILE. ALSO, KEEP THE
PAPER GUIDE FACE UP.
Cut, sew and press the grout as before. Do not trim the excess
grout.
Make sure the two sections of each block are still in the same numerical sequence as they were
before cutting-WITH #1 AT THE TOP OF THE PILE, RIGHT SIDE UP.
SHIFT FOUR: Take the cut section of the first FOUR squares (without the numbers) and put
them on the bottom of the pile in the same sequence.
Sew sections together as you did the second time, pinning to make sure the grout in the two
sections is aligned.
FOURTH CUT: Open the paper guide and fold it on the D line.
Making sure the blocks are all right side up and facing the same
way they did at the start, cut the blocks as you did before- WITH #1
AT THE TOP OF THE PILE. ALSO, KEEP THE PAPER GUIDEFACING UP.

SHIFT SEVEN: Take the cut section of the first SEVEN squares (without the number) and put
it on the bottom of the pile.
Sew together as you did the last time. Pin to make sure the existing grout in BOTH sections
are aligned.
It is now time to square your blocks. The easiest way is to use a 15 inch ruler.
Take time to play around with the placement of your blocks. Since they are square they can be
rotated in any position to make a pleasing effect. If possible, avoid having the same fabrics meet
and balance the colors/fabrics throughout the quilt.
Using the remaining grout, connect the blocks to form four horizontal rows and then connect
the rows. Complete by sewing grout around the finished assembly.
The boarders of the quilt are up to you (I generally do a 4 inch border in the same color as my
grout).
