Stainless steel and Electric vehicle market to drive Nickel Demand in FY 18 Increased global stainless steel demand and future prospects of

Electric Vehicle Market will be driving Nickel demand. Nickel, a key raw

material in stainless steel manufacturing, has been rallying since last

couple of months and has touched new high in March'18. It is predicted

that Nickel demand will grow at 4% annually for next 10 years. Growth

is expected on account of higher consumption of nickel in the stainless

steel, which is projected to grow at an annual average rate of 2.5% in

the next 10 years, mainly driven by higher output in China and

Indonesia. On the other side, Nickel consumption will also be driven by

the increased demand from battery segment, which is expected to

grow 20% annually in the next 10 years.

Jindal Stainless Demonstrates its Duplex Grade Clout For Strategic Sector

Duplex stainless steel is known to be a vital element in strategic sectors like defence. It exhibits high

strength-to-weight ratio and greater corrosion resistance when it comes to stress corrosion. To

reveal its range of offerings, Jindal Stainless participated in “Duplex Stainless Steel and its

applications in Strategic Sector” seminar on 26 April, 2018 at Hyderabad. The seminar was organized by

MIDHANI (Mishra Dhatu Nigam), a defence sector PSU which manufactures strategic materials, along with IIM

Chapter Hyderabad & Indian Stainless Steel Development Association. Jindal Stainless showcased different

applications of duplex stainless steel along with its manufacturing capabilities at the seminar.

Oscillate wound coils are best known to increase the productivity as they

facilitate longer and continuous operations in the system. This type of

winding provides many benefits like fewer changeovers, reduced start-up

problems and generation of lesser scrap. Out of the many segments,

requirement of oscillate wound coils in Single Edge blade steel is norm,

where the steel strips with a width as low as 5 mm is oscillate wound. A coil

weight range of 150 kgs can be achieved which is many times more than the

normal ribbon/pancake type of packaging. Jindal Stainless is now equipped

to offer these coils in the Blade Steel & Precision Strips segment through our

Special Products Division.

Insights

Railway is now one of the most promising

segments where stainless steel has gained

significant importance in the last five years.

Ever since the government decided to convert majority

of coaches into stainless steel coaches, our segment

lead Mr Nagarajan P has been playing a pivotal role

between various railway coach factories and Jindal

Stainless. His untiring and zealous efforts to regularly

meet, plan and coordinate with railways to understand

Keeping The Rolling Stock Steady

and deliver their expectations in coordination with

operations and quality teams at Jindal Stainless is

laudable. He is always exploring newer applications

in railways and devotes majority of his time in railway

workshops to get the knack of the requirements.

One ought to be on his toes, especially if the

production targets for FY 18-19 by railways are

2000 coaches compared to a target of 750 coaches

last year.

e is a photographer, but only by

Havocation; a promising author, who

can acquaint you with the tricks to

succeed in the corporate world; a leader who

puts his team before himself, mentoring them to

grow to fill his shoes, he is a student for life who

thinks every day at work has something new to

learn from.

Traversing an array of business functions, from

'Mines' to 'Marketing', meet a most versatile

leader, TV Srinivas Shenoy - Chief Marketing and

Sales, Ferro Alloys and Minerals SBU of Tata Steel.

Here, he, shares his mantra of work and life in an

exclusive talk with the communications team of

Jindal Stainless.

Q. Introduce us to young Shenoy

and some of his early childhood

memories.

 started out as an engineering

student. I was fortunate to

make it to NIT Rourkela (REC

then) and graduated as a Mining

Engineer and joined Tata Steel from

the campus itself. I'm the third child

of a middle-class family, with two

elder sisters, and aspired to become

a pilot or a cricketer by profession. I

spent my entire childhood in

Sunabeda, a cosy township tucked

away in the Koraput District in

Odisha, watching the manufacturing

of engines of the fighter MiG aircraft

jets, as my father worked in one of

those plants as an engineer. So when

both of my sisters grew up to become

doctors, I needed to balance it out;

a n d t h a t ' s h ow e n g i n e e r i n g

happened to me. Though simple

l iving, my family placed supreme

emphasis to education, ethics and values.

That is what my childhood was all about,; it

still had a distinct charm to it which only a

small town, away from the hustle-bustle of

city, can offer. Looking back, I would have

perhaps the best education one can get in

my school, V S Vidyalaya and owe a lot of

what I am today to my school teachers. But

this is all about my past. My present world is

surrounded by my loving wife Shantal, who

is a school teacher, and my daughter

Dimitra who is a state level badminton

player, studying in class eleven.

Q. More than two-decade with

Tatas, what are some noteworthy

milestones of your career?

I started my career with Tata Steel in

1992 as a Mining engineer in the

Noamundi/ Joda Iron ore Mines.

There, I learnt all the important traits

that a novice needs to become

competent in his job. From shop-

floor management, to handling

workmen, to all the admin work,

every day was abundant with

learning and I enjoyed every bit of it.

In 1995 I went on to do my MBA from

the T A Pai Management Institute

and shortly after majoring in

Marketing moved to a different yet

c h a l l e n g i n g r o l e a s a S a l e s

professional in the Tubes SBU of Tata

Steel. After sales stints in various

locations I went on to head the North

Zone sales. Soon after that, I was

appointed the Marketing Head of the

Agrico and Retail initiatives SBU. All this

while, I was first located in Mumbai,

Ahmedabad, and then in Delhi. Today,

I head the Sales and Marketing function

of Tata Steels' Ferro Alloys and Minerals

SBU based out of Kolkata. Exposure to

different places and multiple roles,

taught me a great deal of flexibility and

skills; skills that have helped me become

who I am. They also serve as fodder to

another challenge that I undertook

voluntarily – that of writing a book. Once,

completed, this can indeed be one of my

biggest milestones.

Q. Can you tell us more about this book

of yours?

believe that every day at work is a

case study. You meet different

people with different personalities and

traits. How people react, how they

behave, how they ideate and the

reasons behind these are leaning that

can form patterns. Once you start

examining them in detail, you can

unlock a lot of secrets of the corporate

world. This book is a compilation of

a n e c d o t e s / i n c i d e n t s f r o m m y

professional journey and lessons that I

have learnt while interacting with

others in the Corporate. I have named

the book “Corporate Musings” and

when published, I hope it can be a

professional guide to help everyone in

the Corporate learn the rules of the

game. In this, I have also mentioned

some of those traits that are

c o m m o n t o a l m o s t a l l t h e

successful corporate leaders;

leaders who I have personally

observed growing and reaching the

top.

Q . I n y o u r e n t i r e g a m u t o f

customers, what sets Jindal

Stainless apart?

We never treat Jindal Stainless as our

customer. We are partners who have

been working together quite

successfully over the years. Mr

Ganesh and his team are real eager-

beavers. I still remember how in one

of the initial meetings, he came up

with an idea and said to me “you

send us chrome ore & Coke we will

convert it to ferro, chrome and buy it”

That suggestion struck and there we

formed one of the most unique

relationships; transitioning from a

customer to a partner. The synergy

that exists between us and Jindal

Stainless is commendable and

perhaps the only such partnership

which exists globally in this industry.

Q. What is your message to future

leaders out there?

I don't have just one but four

important messages for our young

leaders: The first one is, 'raise your

hand'. The difference between good

and great managers is that great ones

take challenges and never succumb to

their comfort zone. I see this as a symbol

of 'raising hand'. Those who raise their

hand and rise to the occasion are bound

to be successful.

The second one is even more important.

As you grow, you need a very strong

team and that is possible only when you

nurture your people and empower

them enough that they prove your

worth through their work. You definitely

need to put them first and yourself

second. That's what will make you a

good leader.

The third one is to have a mentor in life;

someone who can guide you and

someone who you can look up to. You

need him/her the most when you

meander through difficulties. Corporate

life can be very unforgiving and to

navigate through tough times and in

good times having a mentor helps

significantly.

The last one is to have a passion in

life beyond work. This is essential to

release all the work related pressure.

I am a photographer and trust me, this

pursuit helps me even more in my

professional life.

The man of fire indeed; tell us what

spark of your childhood had ignited

this fire in you?

The journey from being Nathuni Pandit

to the senior technician in India's

biggest stainless steel plants is not

very intimidating. It is a story of any

common man who has been through a

difficult childhood owing to lack of

resources; and this one begins in a

small village of Bihar. Being a sole

bread-earner, my father had seen

extreme difficulties in raising five

children; I happened to be the eldest

and thsus expected to be the most

responsible one. Born to ill health and

severe weakness, I was a petite and

feeble child who was bed ridden for up

to three years of age. Though the

complete recovery couldn't happen

until I was six, my medical treatment

demanded a great deal of money,

which my father struggled really heard to

earn. I completed my matriculation

studying in one of the local schools of

the village. The burden to provide for six

family members, including himself,

drove my father towards insanity and

soon came a time when our financial

conditions became from bad to worst.

As the eldest son, everyone's eyes

turned to me and I surrendered myself

into the flames of expectations. It was

the fire created by the rigors of poverty

that transformed a fragile little child into

a hardened-young man who could raise

six people of his family.

So in what conditions did that

mature-young man start making a

living?

It was in 2005. With the help of a distant

relative, I got a contractual job of a helper

in grinding section of Allied Casting in

Nagpur. Three thousand three hundred

rupees (Rs 3,300) is what I used to get

in lieu of all the hard work and labor, of

which two thousand rupees I'd send to

my family. For three years, in the same

money, I went through the same sweat

and toil. In 2007, I came to Odisha to

appear for an interview in Bhushan

Steel and I was made an LRF (Ladle

Refining Surface) technician where I

used to raise temperature and adjust

the chemical composition of the

molten metal. This is when I was first

exposed to the heat and fire, that

reared my mettle soon enough, and in

2011 I got an opportunity to work for

Jindal Stainless, Jajpur.

Seven years, and you are our

stainless hero today. How did you

do this?

To become stainless, one not just has

to undergo 'heat and fire', but needs

people who can polish you and ensure

eet Nathuni Pandit- the man of

Mfire, whose day begins in the

scorching heat of Steel Melt Shop

and ends around the fire that rears our 'stainless'

in its lap. The fire that carries our 'scrap(e)' and

transforms it into a shining glittery metal. A

metal that defines our existence and helps us

make our living.

Nathuni Pandit - Senior Technician, SMS-Jajpur

there is no blemish. Working in around

1700 degree Celsius of temperature every

day for more than eleven years, and

suffering two minor injuries, I became

sturdy like steel, but it was my good fate

that made me meet people like Mr

Bhagwan Singh, Mr Mukesh Pathak, Mr

Rajesh Sharma, and Mr Gurbaxani, who

helped me gain that sheen of stainless. In

just six months of my stint with Jindal

Stainless, I was shifted to AOD. In my

various initiatives, a few have caught the

limelight and that's how people have

started recognizing me. Some of these

achievements have been:

• Reduction of non-process time thereby

cutting the pouring and sampling time by

one third

• Additional responsibility as a 'Safety

Captain' owing to my interest in promoting

safety at shop-floor

• Roko-Toko campaign initiator and

participant

• Mainta in ing qual i ty at House

Keeping by reducing material

wastage up to 0%

•Mentor ing and t ra in ing junior

technicians.

“SMS has been hugely benefited in

terms of productivity and quality

because of people like Nathuni

Pandit. Nathuni is not only an

outstanding technician, he even

works for housekeeping and looks

after precious material. He closely

inspects AOD vessel condition for

improving AOD life, as well as

keeps a check on mater ia l

addition, wherever required, to

help reduce the AOD process time,

thereby improving productivity of

shop floor. Though he works in a

very hot and critical zone, he never

lacks in any of his jobs. His drive to

promote safety at shop-floor has

helped us reduce accidents at

workplace. He is a true stainless hero.”

– Bhagwan Singh, AGM- SMS, Jajpur

What is your message to Jindal

Stainless family?

My message to all is very simple and clear.

I work for around 11 hours a day, 8 hours to

make my living and 3 hours on the safety of

my fellow colleagues. Thus, the three hours

that I devote after work, mean a lot to me. I

urge all my colleagues to follow safety

instructions and promote it too. Loss of

hours or loss of production can later be

recouped, but loss of life is the biggest loss

ever. Our safety is in our own hands. Treat it

as priority.

In the last month quiz, we asked the

following question:

Above stainless steel statue stands 62 m (203 ft) tall

upon the a building with the overall structure

measuring 102 m (335 ft) including its base and

weighing 560 tons. What is the name of this statue

and where is it located?

Answer: The Motherland Monument is a

monumental statue in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.

The sculpture is a part of the Museum of The History

of Ukraine in World War II, Kiev. The stainless steel

statue stands 62 m (203 ft) tall upon the museum

main building with the overall structure measuring

102 m (335 ft) including its base and weighing 560

tons. The sword in the statue's right hand is 16 m (52

ft) long weighing 9 tons, with the left hand holding

up a 13 by 8 m (43 by 26 ft) shield with the State

Emblem of the Soviet Union. Initially the image of

the statue was drawn by Vutchetich from Ukrainian

painter Nina Danyleiko, after the design was taken

over by Borodai from another Ukrainian sculptor

Halyna Kalchenko, a daughter of the Prime Minister

of Ukraine Nikifor Kalchenko.

The sword of the statue was cut because the tip of

the sword was higher than the cross of the Kiev

Pechersk Lavra.

Winners-

We continue to get an overwhelming response for

our quiz. Amongst 348 entries, Mr Frank William

(Whilson Steel Supplier) & Mr Mrutyunjaya Sahoo

(NALCO) were the first ones to revert back with the
