Access to clean potable water is theright of every citizen in a healthy livingenvironment. With city populationswelling up every year, there is an everincreasing demand of clean water. capacity. The decision to convert theexisting carbon steel tankers withstainless steel (AISI 304) was taken aftera long discussion between variousstakeholders. Delhi Jal board wasexplained about the benefits of usingstainless steel for potable water system.Once the excellent hygienic properties, high corrosion resistance, longer life, lifecycle costing, better strength andformability of stainless steel wasexplained to them it was an easierdecision to make.

Hygienically Reliable

World Health Organization, aspecialized agency of the United Nations(UN) concerned with international publichealth, in their technical note on‘delivering safe water by tanker highlightsthe fact that stainless steel is safe forsuitable storage and transportation ofpotable water. The easy cleaning abilityof stainless steel makes it the firstchoice for strict hygienic conditions.

It has been proved that Stainless steel’scleanability is similar to that of glass, porcelain and far superior to plastics, aluminium and earthenware.

For Delhi Jal Borad (DJB) one of the primereasons to select Stainless steel was toensure the hygiene, purity of water andassurance that tankers will not degradein service. Thanks to stainless steelexcellent corrosion resistance it is oneof the best materials to preserve thequality of water. There has beencomplaint to Delhi Jal Board about thesevere rusting of mild steel tankspromoting bacterial overgrowth. It wasinformed that inside surface of steeltankers are painted with black coal tarpaint which over a periodic use dissolvesinto the water posing serious healthissues.

Lighter and Stronger

When it comes to design, stainless steeloffers same strength at lower thickness.Stainless steel (AISI 304) high strengthpermits the use of lighter gauges thanother metals - and at prices competitivewith most of them. The tankers for both3000 & 9000 ltrs capacities are built of4mm thick sheets and are as light asnearly 500 and 1100 kg respectively.Lower weight helps in achieving higherfuel efficiency. Stainless steel resists

denting, nicking and scratching under themost vigorous of operating conditions.

Costs less over the service life

There is an increasing awareness thatlife cycle costs, not just initial cost, should be considered when making adecision and Delhi Jal Board took thedecision considering the fact thatexpected service life of stainless steelwater tankers will be more than 5 timesthan that of steel tankers. Although theinitial cost of each tanker is nearly twicethan that of steel tankers but thisincremental initial cost is recovered infew years considering the downtime,

maintenance and replacement of rustedsteel tankers over a period of every 3 to4 years. Because stainless steel doesnot corrode under normal conditions andnever needs paint, costly maintenanceis cut down drastically. Stainless steelis eco-friendly as it is fully recyclable andoffers high residual value compared tosteel tankers.

Riding on this success, ISSDA will beapproaching other municipal corporationin different states of the country and willexplain the benefits of using stainlesssteel for water transportation and thiscould translate into a huge marketpotential.

Stainless Steel Centenary Symposium (SSCS2013)The global stainless steel community ismarking 100 years since stainless steelswere first discovered, patented andproduced. Since then, stainless steelhas grown to be an integral part of ourmodern world. To mark 100 years ofdiscovery of stainless steels, a numberof events are taking place in India andthe rest of the world.

We are glad to inform you thatDepartment of Atomic EnergyGovernment of India is organizing aStainless Steel Centenary Symposium(SSCS2013) with Indian Institute ofMetals. This symposium is beingorganized in association with IndianNational Academy of Engineering. ISSDAhas extended its full support to thesymposium. This would take place duringAugust 12-14, 2013 to coincide with thecompletion of 100 years (on the widelyaccepted date) for discovery of stainlesssteels.

The objective of the symposium is to takea stock of the latest developments andadvancements in various fields related toproduction, fabrication and experience oftackling corrosion and achieving longservice life of components in variousindustries. Prominent scientists, leadingpeople from academic and stainlesssteel industry from country and abroadwill enlighten you with their knowledge, experience and innovation with stainlesssteel.

Topics covered wouldinclude

- Melting and refining- Fabrication/forming- Welding & Joining- Physical metallurgy- Corrosion and its

control- Experience from use of

stainless steels invarious industriesincluding newervarieties of stainlesssteels and itsproperties

Who should attend

This centenary seminarwould bring together allthose who are involved withstainless steel - making, shaping, treating, use, research and developmentetc. The focused thematicsymposia would be usefulfor engineers, technicians, managers, scientists, researchers, users, architects, fabricators ofstainless steels. It would bean appropriate forum to lookback at the beginning ofstainless steels and how farwe have come withstainless steels.

The International Stainless SteelForum (ISSF) has releasedpreliminary figures for 2012 whichshow that world stainless steelproduction grew by 5.2% to reach arecord high of 35.4 million metrictonnes (Mt).

Again China accounted for most of theincrease in production. Stainless steelproduction in Asia (excluding China)decreased by 0.6% to 8.7 Mt in 2012.Japanese production reduced by 2.5%to 3.2 Mt, while Taiwan, China lost 7.8%of its stainless steel production overthe year. Few countries in Asiaincreased output, though Korea(+0.5%) and India (+5.3%) achievedpositive growth during 2012.

Even during the recent years of reducedeconomic activity, China has been theprincipal growth area for stainlesssteel production. During 2012 itincreased production by 14.2% toreach 16.1 Mt (based on correctedfigures for 2011 and 2012). Together,Asian stainless steel producers nowaccount for 70% of global production.

Western Europe and Africa is thesecond largest stainless steelproducing region despite lowerproduction during 2012. Volume forthe year reached 7.8 Mt, down 0.7%compared to 2011. Growth rates for

A Seminar on New BIS Standard for Low Nickel Austenitic Stainless Steel -Sheet & Strip for Utensils & Kitchen Appliances

A section of the audience.

Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), in association with ISSDAhosted a seminar on the ‘New BIS standard for Low NickelAustenitic Stainless Steel Sheet & Strip for Utensils &Kitchen Appliances’ at Jindal Centre on 15th March 2013,New Delhi. In India utensils and kitchen appliances aremanufactured in large quantities by using low nickel austeniticstainless steels. Keeping the interest of the consumers inview, alloy steel and forging sectional committee of BIS, MTD16 has formulated an Indian Standard IS 15997:2012.

The objective of the Seminar was to create awareness of theabove Indian Standard for the benefit of the large section ofmanufacturers of utensils and stainless steel. The programmewas attended by more than 45 participants which includedmanufactures from utensil industry.

Seminar consisted of invited talks from experts who madesignificant contributions in the formulation of this standard.

Presentations were made by Mr N C Mathur, Mr. S Sisodia andDr Arijit Saha Podder deliberating upon the making of thisstandard and its further usefulness. All the presentations areuploaded on ISSDA website www.stainlessindia.org

ISSDA is thankful to Jindal Stainless Limited for providingorganizational support for successful conduction of this seminar. We are hopeful of getting many more standards for stainlesssteel products approved by BIS for the rapid growth of stainlesssteel market in India.
