Rocky Mountain Institute – “The Economics of Grid Defection” (April, 2015)
“Systems have become economic much faster than expected with substantial loss of utility load and revenue…….economic cost recovery periods are now well within the economic life of assets.”
“….for residential and small commercial/industrial users, by 2050 more than 50% of customers will use the [electric] grid only for backup and that the grid will supply [these customers] only 5% [or less] of their power.”

Problems with status quo:“Real-time” electric generation is expensive and dirty
Worst case periods (typically hot summer afternoons) met by fossil-fuel powered “peaker” plants.
Fossil-fuel powered “spinning reserve” generators must always run to balance grid supply and demand
Poor use of capital. Dirty and wasteful by design
Renewables make grid balance worse. Wind and solar are intermittent, fossil fuel plants used to assure “firm” performance
Power plant & transmission line siting, NIMBY, delays. Challenge to meet required growth
18
Solves utility / ISO problems including peak demands, balancing grid, frequency regulation, congestion, emergencies
Saves energy during low demand and discharges during peaks.
Smooths wind and solar power to assure “firm” performance.
Solution: Battery Storage
