Graduated in OsakaUniversity of Arts,Masaki Yokobe akaYKBX is a freelance

director and art director. With strong abilities toproduce unique designs ofcharacters, mechanicals, and backgrounds, YKBXhas worked on NamcosACECOMBAT5 creatingstoryboards, concept art,3D CG modeling, andcompositions.

For me, coming acrossJoan Cornellas collagesare something of a love-at-rst-sight situation thepicture I rst saw told abrief story about a manbeing shot in the crotchby a pink bear in a tree, who then runs over tolend him a tampon. Itshard to say exactly whythese gruesome tales areso pleasing, but I guess itssomething to do with howtheyre simultaneously sowell-drawn, hilarious andcolourful.

Gary Taxali visuallyblends now with then. Hisstyle, inspired by vintagecomics and advertisingart, is repurposed with thegoal of communicating theironies and comical essenceof popular culture. Hiswork is at once alluringand endearing. Despite thevintage look, he is neithermaudlin nor nostalgic. Hisimagery is rich in satiricverve.

Im an AustralianAnimator/Illustratorcurrently working inLondon. Since graduating

in 2008 Ive busied myselfanimating, designingand boarding for some ofAustralia and the UKsleading boutique animationhouses. If you enjoy animation youmay also be interested in anindustry showcase website Ihelp run called Ozanimate. We showcase Australiananimation and the peoplebehind it. Features,

    Interviews and News,

Who/what infuences your art?Is there a particular persons stylethat has infuenced you?

I think there area numberof individuals and thingsthat inuence my design and

illustration work.Theres not necessarily onedesigners style that hassolely inuenced me overthe years, but rather manydifferent individuals. I try tolet the aesthetic of any givenproject be dependent on theconcept. And even thoughwe all certainly have stylesand approaches that we fallback on, its important tohave an idea and reason fordoing something rst, then

make it look pretty. That lastpart is based on a Chip Kiddinterview.

What can you tell us aboutwhat youve been up torecently and where we cansee your work going?

My draughtmanship andstorytelling has improved Ithink, but theres some stuffin there that I found reallyinteresting in hindsightand it made me want to getback in touch with the wayI was apparently thinkingback then. Theres a certainway you have to think whenyoure an illustration studentwhich frustrated me at thetime but looking back was

extremely benecial. Imbeginning to see comfortzones I could easily slip intoso I think its useful for me toremember the times when Iwasnt sure what direction Iwas going to go in.

On a recent trip to London,Ryo Takemasa decided todraw what he encounteredand in his version ofthe capital everyone isgrinning, whether theyrebuying some bread, drinking a gentlemanlypint, or queuing for acoffee (mustve been asunny day). Textured andvibrant with an evidentukiyo-e inuence, Ryosillustrations are ruddyfabulous and make eventhe drudgery of travellingon the Tube seem fun andexciting.
