Tune In

In the psychedelic ’60s, Dr. Timothy Leary advised his followers to: “Drop out, turn on, tune in.” While the ideas of dropping out and turning on no longer are politically correct, tuning in is a concept worth re-examining. What I am talking about is tuning in — to the Internet. I could have said “get wired,” but wireless communications are rapidly making that expression passé.

The concept of adopting the personal computer seemingly is alien to many older philat-elists — smaller dealers in particular, although it would greatly expand their horizons. The personal computer never has been easier to use — or more affordable. And, if you are unsure that you want to make the leap, computer and Internet access is no further away than your nearest library.

If you believe that mastering the computer is too difficult or that you are too old, let me remind you that my 91-year-old father tore out his chemical-based darkroom half a dozen years ago and purchased a computer, a couple of digital cameras, film and flatbed scan-ners, and now is enjoying photography and writing more than ever. A forthcoming issue of Travel & Leisure magazine will feature his images in an article on the Horned Dorset Inn and Restaurant in Leondardsville, NY.

Stamp Insider readers will note that Web and e-mail addresses are included, where appro-priate, and that the magazine now includes a new column — Site Seeing — that covers a variety of interesting Internet sites of interest to philatelists.

The more astute, who view the Stamp Insider online, will discover that Web sites and e-mail addresses are hyperlinked so they may be accessed easily. The online version of the magazine also has the table of contents and pages jumps hyperlinked as well. The online version may be viewed at www.geocities.com/fcnyps/cny_si.html.

The online version, beginning with this issue, also includes many color illustrations — something that would be prohibitive costwise with the printed version. Readers will also notice that illustrations in the online version are much clearer than in the printer version. Ongoing efforts are being made to attempt to improve print quality.

GRounding the Corner

Spring is rounding the corner. I believe it is safe to say that we have had our fair share of snow this year. Some, obviously, have had more than their allotted portion. Federation Secretary John Cali frequently assists in supplying information to this page. You probably will note that this is being written as the February 1 deadline approaches.

Fred McDonald’s son, James McDonald, recently was found dead at the age of 40. I hope those who know Fred will convey their condolences to him and offer a prayer or kind thoughts for his son.

School Donations

Many clubs try to attract the youngsters to the hobby and most will tell you this is a dif-ficult task. It might be easier if we — adult philatelists and clubs — were to donate phila-telic material to school stamp clubs. This could result in a lasting rapport between the two groups. You frequently hear that clubs can’t seem to attract the juniors. This would seem to be a positive step in that direction. Some clubs are doing well with a strong junior pres-ence. Others continue having difficulty in obtaining new juniors to their ranks.

Show and Bourse Activity

March and April are great times for both shows and bourses to strut their stuff. We have Buf-pex in March and Valleypex in April. These events both are in the Western Frontier. Many collectors are aware that the federation is statewide, but how many actually travel from one end of the state to the other to attend various philatelic activities? If we hope to maintain our presence with these groups, then it behooves us to visit the folks putting on these events.

A Warm Welcome to Buffalo Stamp Club

It is my pleasure to welcome the Buffalo Stamp Club into the ranks of those participating clubs that supply Stamp Insider with a club page. Just as the other clubs, they will have

Site Seeing

ESPHS Goes Online

The Empire State Postal History Society is now online, thanks to the efforts of Web master Glenn Estus. It is remarkably large and sophisticated for a fledgling site. Of particular note is the fact that the site is easy to navigate and that pages and illustrations load quickly.

Illustrations are in color, of particular value for very old covers where markings are faint and often become almost invisible in black and white. The site has links to the pages of several of the society’s members.

Starting with Winter 2003 Bulletin, the society’s quarterly bulletin is online in Acrobat format easily accessed by most Internet browsers, as is the Stamp Insider starting with the September/October 2003 issue. The site may be viewed at www.esphs.org.

RPA and the Federation

Most readers should be aware that Tom Fortunato of Rochester Philatelic Society main-tains two extensive philatelic sites — one for the RPA and its signature show, Ropex, at www.geocities.com/rpastamps/rpa_usps.html and one for the Federation of Central New York Philatelic Societies at www.geocities.com/fcnyps.

Both contain valuable information and are meticulously maintained and frequently up-dated. As with the ESPHS site, the pages are easy to navigate and illustrations load quickly. The downside is that the two sites are hosted by Geocities, which provides quirky service at best. Oftentimes site visitors are greeted with a Geocities-generated message:

Sorry, this site is temporarily unavailable! The web site you are trying to access has exceeded its allocated data transfer. Visit our help area for more information.Access to this site will be restored within an hour. Please try again later.

This is an effective deterrent to returns by potential visitors.

Buffalo Stamp Club

The Buffalo Stamp Club, which has a presence in the Stamp Insider starting with this issue, has a site at www.buffalostampclub.org. The site’s scope is somewhat limited at present, but shows great potential and is worth book marking for future reference.

National Postal Museum to Sell RevenuesThe National Postal Museum in Washington, DC, will sell several thousand revenue stamps in an effort to raise $1–2 million. It then will thin its revenue collection by destroy-ing many duplicates, keeping an average of 250 copies of each variety. The actions were approved by the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents. The revenues are part of the 7.8 million stamps the Internal Revenue Service gave to the Smithsonian between 1957 and 1977.

It is the intent of the Postal Museum to use the funds realized on this sale to fill in the holes in its U.S. stamp collection. The museum is about 40 stamps short of having all U.S. post-age stamps. Revenue stamps initially were used by the federal government during the Civil War to show that taxes had been paid for certain goods and services. Alcoholic beverages, playing cards, tobacco products, photographs, and legal documents all were required to carry the stamps. By the 1960s the government decided there were other, less costly ways to record payment of taxes.

When the revenue stamps were given to the Smithsonian, it was with the understanding that they could be sold to raise funds for the stamp collection, and that a surplus could be destroyed rather than flood the market.

About the CoverDid you guess that the mystery philatelist is the late George Tillapaugh of the Leather-stocking Stamp Club of Cooperstown? His daughter, Ellen, currently is active with the club and edits its monthly newsletter. The photograph was taken in 1977 by Lady Osta-peck of Fly Creek, NY — a self-described Victorian portraitist. Letter Sheets Recall Silas WrightBy Albert W. Starkweather

A group of 13 folded letters sheets addressed to a prominent upstate New York political leader in the first half of the 19th century recall the turbulent political tides of the time and of a rivalry with Millard Fillmore. Kenneth A. Hall, a member of the Empire State Postal History Society, compiled the collection, which includes letters from five congressmen.

Silas Wright, Jr. a Senator, Representative, comptroller, and Gover-nor of New York, was born in Amherst, MA, May 24, 1795. After being admitted to the bar in 1819, he began practice in Canton. Becoming involved in state politics, in the 1820s he opposed the faction headed by Governor De Witt Clinton and became one of the leaders of the Albany Regency — a political machine built around Martin Van Buren that led to the birth of the Democratic party and the presidency of Andrew Jackson.

Wright was surrogate of St. Lawrence County from 1821–1824; a state senator from 1824–1827; brigadier general of the state militia in 1827; and state comptroller from 1829–1833. The letters in the Hall collection are all addressed to Wright, as comptroller, in Albany.

A Jackson Backer

A Jacksonian Democrat, he served in the in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1827 through 1830, and in the United States Senate from 1833 through 1844. Wright originally was elected to the Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William L. Marcy, also an Albany Regency member.

In the U.S. Senate, Wright consistently supported President Andrew Jackson, voted for the annexation of Texas, upheld the independent treasury system, and opposed slavery.

He was nominated as the 1844 Democratic vice presidential candidate, but he refused the nomination. He defeated Fillmore, a Whig, for Governor of New York, serving from 1845–1847. As governor, Wright vetoed a canal improvement bill, opposed calling the constitutional convention of 1846, and used the militia in the anti-rent riots.

Ironically, Wright was defeated for re-election in 1846 by John Young, who entered poli-tics as a Jacksonian Democrat, and later moved to the Whig Party.

Young was rewarded for his support of Zachary Taylor for president by being named as-sistant treasurer of the United States, serving under Fillmore as well. Wright, on the other hand, had backed Andrew Jackson in his opposition to the Bank of the United States.

Wright died in Canton Aug. 27, 1847. Wright counties in Minnesota and Missouri are named for him. His portrait was on the U.S. $50 gold certificate from the 1880s until about 1913.

Erin historical society offers Covers

The Erin Historical Society of Erin, NY, once again is offering Irish-related covers with special postmarks for two events — on March 13 for the Second Annual Irish Festival and on March 17 for St. Patrick’s Day. This will be the 62nd year that the society has offered St. Patrick’s Day cards. Proceeds will benefit the Erin Historical Museum.

The covers, having black type and green artwork, feature either “St. Patrick’s Showers of Blessings” or “Happy St. Patrick’s Day / Erin go Bragh.” Each cover includes a postcard with “An Irish Blessing,” which is also available separately. The covers are $3 each plus 37 cents postage, while the postcards are $1.50 each plus 23 cents postage. They are available from the Erin Historical Society, P.O. Box 138, Erin, NY 14838. Checks should be made payable to the society. The society also has a limited number of covers from some previous years starting in 1982. A list is available from the organization. The Erin Historical Society also may be contacted at [email protected].

St. Pádraig: Fact or Fiction?

Pádraig (Patrick) wasn’t actually Irish. He was born around 373 A.D. in either Scotland, near the town of Dumbarton, or in Roman Britain. He had a very long life for those times, dying around 465. • Little is known about St. Patrick, including his birth and death dates. March 17 is traditionally considered to be one of the two, although there is no documenta-tion to corroborate this. • As a teen, Patrick was enslaved in Ireland and he returned there later in life as a missionary. • There were never any snakes — or other reptiles for that matter — in Ireland for St. Patrick to chase out. • The shamrock was used by Patrick as a visual aid in explaining the Trinity — the concept of one God in three persons.

Undeterred by Winter’s Chill

Here in Buffalo the winter’s chill has not dampened the preparations for the upcoming show. Once again the Sheraton Four Points will host Bufpex — our club-sponsored show. March 13th and 14th promise to be exciting days for stamp collectors from all over the area. This is Buffalo’s oldest and largest stamp show and sale.

Dealers and Exhibits

We are still signing dealers and with their help we are planning a fabulous show. We will have a full complement of exhibits to help new collectors to see what is possible in the hobby.

This year we will have a show cover and show cancel designed by our own Marge Schlein-ing depicting the bicentennial of the Buffalo Post Office. Come one, come all: This prom-ises to be the best of the spring events.

Monthly Meetings

Our monthly meetings at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Fridays of the month from Sep-tember to June at the Leonard Post VFW, 2450 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga, are still well attended and the first Friday of each month we have an auction with items supplied by members. Great bargains and a fun night what more could you ask for? Why not plan on attending and seeing just what the excitement is all about.

Web Site

Check out the web site at www.buffalostampclub.org for directions.

Online Classifieds

An innovation on our Web site allows members to post and answer classified ads online. The club’s circus topical covers also may be viewed an ordered here.

A Madison Entrepreneur

By Joseph Rowbottom

Life in rural, small towns often required some ingenuity, creativity, and plain old hard work in order to earn a living. A cover from Madison, N.Y., is a good example of this. Madison is a very small farming community, yet a hundred years ago Judson N. Burton ran a stamp and coin business there. The elaborate corner card in the upper left advertises that auctions were held regularly.

The printing on the lower left says “Save Money on Stationary Here.” Burton evidently was also a printer as he is offering 250 envelopes and letterheads for 75 cents “just to get you to try my work.” Next to the picture of the rabbit is written “Valuable Treatise on the Belgian Hare. All you should know, illustrated and handsomely printed in colors. Free to prospective buyers on receipt of stamp for postage. Have hares from $1.50 up per pair. Write Judson N. Burton, Madison, N.Y.”

Other covers say he filled want lists, offered approvals, and sold stamp and coin supplies. So Judson must have been quite an entrepreneur. In addition to stamps, printing, and rabbits, I’m pretty sure he had two or three other irons in the fire to turn a buck. Gotta run. Think I’ll order a Penny Black and a pair of Belgians. Hope he won’t ship ’em in the same package.

Old Man Winter takes his tollThe harsh winter took its toll on club activities. Both of our January meetings were can-celled because of the inclement weather. When we had our first meeting of 2004 in Febru-ary it had been more than two months since we had gotten together.

Club Growing

After adding two new members this fall our current membership stands at 24 members. At our last meeting in 2003 we had our highest attendance of the year, which featured a philatelic scavenger hunt and a Christmas goodies exchange.

To encourage continued high attendance we changed our door prize. Instead of giving philatelic items to a member selected from those in attendance, as we have done for sever-al years, we now award a $5 cash prize to a winner from all club members. If that member is present at the meeting, he or she will receive the cash. If not that cash amount will be added to the $5 prize at the following meeting, making for a larger prize then.

Cachets

We produced special pictorial cachets for the Chinese Year of the Monkey and the Love stamps. We are producing a cachet for the Dr. Seuss stamp in March. It is available to collectors for $2 by sending a sase to Gil Lewis, 502 Rt. 88 S., Newark, NY 14513. We also will be producing cachets for the Lewis and Clark stamps in May and for the U.S.S. Constellation stamp in June.

Stamp and Cover Show in the Works

The club is busily preparing for the Stamp, Coin, and Cover Show that it again will co-host with Utica Stamp Club over the Columbus Day Weekend (Saturday and Sunday, October 9–10), which will give everyone a travel day on Monday, the holiday.

The show again will be at the Turning Stone Casino and Resort in Verona, accessible from New York State Thruway Exit 33. We are seeking exhibitors and have a prospectus avail-able. Dealers must call Joe Christofaro at his new stamp and coin shop at 607 E. Dominick St., Rome, NY 13440. His number is 315-339-1628 at the shop or 315-337-9608 at home.

All of our membership appears to be reasonably healthy with fewer complaints than might be expected considering the arctic freeze we are in the midst of at I write this in mid January! Our very first auction was a success … we grossed about $200 and it appears the auction is here to stay in one form or another.

Help the Research Library

The FCNYPS Research Library and offices at the Rome Historical Society are coming along … albeit more slowly than we had hoped. Cataloging is a tedious job but extremely important nonetheless! We have had a number of donations ranging from auction cata-logues to great reference books. Keep the Federation in mind if and when you come across a collection of stamps, covers, postal history (particularly New York State) or reference materials that someone would like to donate to a worthy (educational) cause.

Meetings Snowed OutThe club was forced to cancel its December and January meetings. The weather simply did not cooperate. Those reading this must understand that it is being composed during late January. It is hoped that the club will be successful and meet in February.

New Adventure Continues

Club President Tom Schneider is continuing his plans for a new venture as reported in the last issue. However, due to the cancellations, such a formation was delayed. The ARC (Association for Retarded Children) Stamp and Cover Club will hopefully be off to a great start starting with either February or March meetings.

Holiday Greetings

February’s holidays seem to be featuring Presidents’ Day and Valentine’s Day while March conveys the wearing of the green with St. Patrick’s Day. We hope that all of our readers will be able to enjoy one of these holidays.

Circuit News

Our regular feature of APS circuits will continue. Changing topics within the circuits seems to have spawned new interest in having these items at meetings. We are now trying out Disney on Stamps. This area seems to also have seen a great deal of interest since the issuance of U.S. adhesives. Foreign stamps are also growing in quantity as well.

Meeting Information

The club meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month except July and August in the Hughes Building, 314 Park St. The March meeting will be on March 17.

Meeting Notes

December — 27 attended, no doubt attracted by the Season’s Goodies brought by the members and enjoyed by all! Al Parsons reported on the club’s participation for the second consecutive year in the Painted Post Office Holiday open house Dec. 9, complete with a pic-torial cancel. There were many who wanted the cancel for their Christmas Cards, and mem-ber Gordon Stratton rose to the challenge, making it easier for the P.O. staff to conduct tours and play Santa Claus for visiting school children. President Mike showed an APS slide program, Airships of the United States. January — Attendance was the usual 20. Fred Dykins reported on an area group’s plans to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the Sullivan Expedi-tion. Clayton Spangenberg showed an1879 Scott Catalogue (the world in one small volume), 100 years after the Sullivan Expedition. The auction had 17 lots, 15 of which sold for a total of $28.85, including two Club lots for $3. From the two Club lots and its commission on the other lots the Club received a total of $5.60; the auction consignors received $23.25.

Lilac Festival Philately

One of this year’s Ropex themes is the Rochester Lilac Festival begun in 1888 when nurs-erymen George Ellwanger and Patrick Barry donated what is now Highland Park. At that time it was 20 acres filled with a variety of trees and shrubs. Here are two examples of philatelic items that commemorated the event in years past.

The first is from 1949, mailed early during festival time on May 18. This official USPS post card is a “Notice to Sender of Forwarding Address,” Form 3547 Revision 11-47. It was

mailed to the sender in New York City who requested to re-ceive the address of their correspondent who moved. This is a fairly scarce postal form.

The second is a 25-cent meter impres-sion using lilac col-ored ink paying an international rate. Cropped here, the cover bears a corner card of Taylor Instru-ments, a well known

manufacturer of measuring devices of all kinds, and was mailed to the Division of Health, Welfare, and Housing of the Institute of Inter-American Affairs, in care of the American Embassy, Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Christmas Party Snowed OutWe were still meeting in a snowy December and frigid January. Our Christmas party was snowed out in December, so we had it at our first January meeting. We had a good turnout and ordered off the menu for a change. Peg brought Avon gifts for everyone. We could never make it without Peg.

New York Doanes

Our second January meeting was our January auction and was a success. Bidding was spir-ited and most lots sold. At our first February meeting, Maris Tirums spoke on New York Doanes which was a special experimental postmark made of rubber instead of steel. They were issued to small post offices. We thank Maris for a fine and unusual presentation.

Philatelic Quiz

Looking ahead, I will give my Philatelic Quiz at the next meeting. In March, Don Van Hou-sen will do 1898 Battleships. Tom Hanley will give more Irish Philately. In April, Phil Hicks will talk on “This and That” and Ray Majors will speak on Tax Paid.

At the February meeting, Art Baker spoke on Where Deltiology and Philately Meet: the other side of the picture postcard. These began to appear in Europe in the mid 19th century. How-ever, restrictive postal regulations discouraged their use. A few cards appeared at the time of the Columbian Exposition, but were printed on drab government-issued card stock. Privately printed pioneer cards were of better quality, but required two cents postage.

On May 19, 1898, Congress authorized use of privately printed cards that could be sent at the prevailing one-cent rate. However, the open back of the card was reserved for the ad-dress and stamp. Messages had to appear on the card’s face. However, on March 1, 1909, the Post Office Department authorized use of the back of the card for a written message, as well as the recipient’s address. These were known as split or divided back cards.

Prior to World War I, many color picture postcards were printed in Germany. Other qual-ity cards were imported from England and France. However a debate in 1907 led to the Payne–Aldrich Tariff Act, which protected card companies. Highly attractive cards were produced by Detroit Publishing Co., Rotocroft, and many others. The zenith of postcard usage appears to have been about 1912, when more than one billion were mailed.

Dr. Baker displayed cards of various types, including those carried on Railway Post Offices (RPOs). In major cities, street cars and interurbans carried mail and cancellations were used for these cars.

Machin Definitives Talk

The British machin definitives series will be the topic of the March 2 meeting. Larry Griswald will describe this group of stamps, which began in 1967 and continues to date. It constitutes the longest production of stamps of a single design.

More than 500 varieties are known, distinguished by denomination, shade, and printer, and more recently location within Britain. The bust of Queen Elizabeth depicted on this stamp was made from a mold prepared by Arnold Machin in 1965.

The site was developed by noted landscaper Frederick Law Olmstead, whose most famous work is New York City’s Cen-tral Park. The first lilacs were planted by horticulturist John Dunbar in 1892. The 20 original bushes are now a collection of more than 500 varieties. This year’s festival is May 14–23. Events include a 10K race, the annual Lilac Parade, an arts and crafts show, live music, international cuisine, and the blooms themselves. More than 500,000 visitors will attend the festivities.
