• First of all, before you get near to making an application, ask yourself honestly if you really want to work for Deloitte and, if the answer is ‘yes’, ask yourself why.

• It’s important that you have a clear understanding of your motives and that you know you’re applying for the right reasons.

E-Tray Exercise

An E-tray exercise is a computer based simulation of an email in box that lasts for, and must be completed within, a fixed amount of time. During the exercise emails will arrive into your in box e-tray and you will be required to:

Part 1 – reply to emails (20 emails in the hour)Part 2 (Choose one of 3 acquisitions – 40 mins to write recommendation)

• Make basic calculations; • Extract information from data provided; • Make judgement calls on how to deal with demanding managers/unhappy clients etc.

Case Study

What is the assessor looking for?

• Use the preparation time effectively.

• Underline noteworthy sections in the text. This will help you work quicker and more accurately.

• You will normally be permitted to make notes and take these to the interview. Identify the key issues, and then prioritise them by importance so that you discuss the most pertinent issues first.

• When in the interview, stay focussed on the case study, and do not get sidetracked into talking about the real-world industry unless asked to do so.

• Speak clearly. Remember they are assessing you analytical and reasoning skills.

• The interviewer will deliberately reason with you to force you to justify and defend your answers. Be prepared to justify all your main points.

• Remember, there are no right answers; consider all lines of argument however present one as your chosen opinion, mentioning why you discredited the other possibilities.

It is key that:

You are not overbearing. You are clear, concise and confident. Everybody in the group has an equal opportunity to speak. You make your points and if criticised, are prepared to stand up for yourself and diplomatically argue why your opinions are valid. You do not sit quietly while other candidates make their points without making your own. The group reaches a conclusion in the time allocated.

Top tip:

Wear a watch and offer to keep an eye on the time for the group, i.e. you are displaying good time management skills

What are they looking for:

• Partners are trying to determine whether you are a trustworthy, genuine person, who can be trusted to deal with the firm's clients and give them the right impression. They are also trying to determine if you are likely to fit in amongst other employees.

• Try not to show off. • This interview is predominantly a matter of assessing social chemistry, so make sure you are

personable, friendly, open and relaxed. • Shake hands confidently, smile and be courteous, hold strong eye contact throughout your

interview. You should ask questions, such as the partner's role in the firm, and what sort of clients he/she deals with.
