Where we’ve been… Spring 2013: District Anti-bullying Task Force Defined our areas of focus for 2013/2014 school year. – Policy (re-write) – Curriculum (examine, revamp, explore options) – Community Events and Outreach

• Elementary: “Committee for Children” – Strengthen – Consistency
• Middle School: Olweus Pilot
• Middle and High School: Steve Wessler – Examining culture – Building new culture through student

• Examined curriculum and selected / ensured instruction of key lessons and ideas
• Consolidating / drafting new and consistent Elementary documents to be used district-wide to fit our Policy and efforts

BULLY PREVENTION MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS
• Steve Wessler – International anti-bully expert – Conducted focus groups examining “true” culture of each school
• Student training – Wessler “train the trainer”: Staff/Community Volunteers
• Staff debrief of individual/district findings • Initial Respect Team organization
– Focus on positive messages
• Signage in every school • Individual School Efforts
– e.g. Lip Synch at LCHS
• Principals working on new, consistent approach documents based on elementary work
• Addressing Inappropriate Touching – Plan/template created with CdA Police and Wessler; ready to
implement fall 2014
WESSLER SUMMARY
Our kids have the courage & empathy to battle the problems every community faces. What makes us different is we are willing to face those problems & demand change.
WESSLER RECOMMENDATIONS
• Peer Leadership programs for students ü Train the trainer, slow infiltration ü Wessler returning in October to train more, work with counselors also
• Conflict Resolution Dialogues ☐ Not planned yet
• Efforts to reduce impact of bias and degrading language ü Respect clubs identified; more to come in ‘14-15
• Workshops for faculty and staff on response and prevention ü Wessler returning in August to train all staff
• Addressing inappropriate touching ü Coordinated plan with CdA Police
• Addressing anti-Jewish bias and degrading language ☐ Started conversations among teachers

We are still working on… • Finalizing the consistent anti bully procedures in every school district-wide
• Organizing a program for speakers bureau/outreach to community groups
– Share language, strategies of school district
• Creating pamphlets, brochures and training materials
• Ordering Bracelets and student reminders of campaign
• Securing funds for future work – Thank you to the Coeur d’Alene Tribe (2 years running) and Kootenai
Electric Trust
