At present only few national design codes for membrane structures are available. They all cover only specific types, such as air halls, temporary structures or mechanically tensioned structures with specific constraints.

Since long time there are discussions to create a commonly agreed design code, which should provide a common sense on: Verification, design approach and quality standards Already the work of the European project TensiNet was a first step in this direction. Then in the actual TensiNet organisation started in 2008 an Specifications and Eurocode working group.

This resulted in the CEN/TC 250 WG 5 which was formed in 2010 in order to elaborate a Eurocode on membrane structures. This working group 5 is actually preparing a SaP report, which is a background document with the actual state of the art in different countries and it gives an outlook to a future Eurocode The next step is to prepare a technical specification TS, which can become on the long run an Eurocode.

The experts in the field are able to do projects without an Eurocode, so why should we have to work on a standard?

There are as many different reasons and opinions as we have participants. A common reason is to increase the market and to have our technology seen as an established building technology and not only a niche market with high risk.

With harmonised safety levels, and commonly agreed quality standards, we improve the quality of our indstry and we avoid doubts of our clients.

We have lived well without an Eurocode, and for us as enginner in the membrane industry, the risk is that more and more engineers will compete with us.

But once they respect all the same quality standards like we do, this becomes at least a fair competition.

By being involved in this standardisation process, we can influence the result so that we are happy with the final result.

As mentioned earlier, there are different opinions for a Eurocode, so are for example some interested in an increased market, and wouldn‘t care about safety levels, and others are mainly interested to minimise the administration process for approval

If you contribute to an Eurocode for structural membranes, you can take part in the decison process, and have at the end a document that fits with your needs.

Membranes are often seen as cladding, treated as a pure addon. This is neglegting the impact that might be beneficial or unfavourable. The structure of the Allianz Arena for example has been designed without taking into account the cladding. Only it‘s selfweight has been taken into account. Therefore another 50% of steel was required to do the secondary structure. With an integrated design I suppose only half of this would have been required.

Also the Unilever façade has been treated as a simple façade. Therefore it was necessary to build stiff and heavy steel frames to couple the high tensile forces which could not be taken by the concrete building.

The proof engineer of the Dresden Castle ETFE roof answered to us: “I do not check the roof tiles” When we sent him our analysis of the cushions.

We know that integrated design is elementary in our business, and without, we will never get good membrane structures, and will never be economic. The standardisation process can help that the others treat our business with the required seriousness to the benefit of all.
