Ayurveda recognizes the use of Acacia catechu heartwood (known as Khadira) in treating various conditions. Acacia catechu is highly valuable for its powerful astringent and antioxidant properties. Acacia catechu extract is derived from heartwood of the tree and is known to contain catechins, which have wide range of therapeutic actions. Catechins have significant antioxidant and 1 antimicrobial effects . Acacia catechu extract has been used for treating fever, leucorrhoea, piles and 2 erysipelas . It is also used in treatment of haemoptysis, 3 gonorrhoea and chest infection . Acacia catechu extract is useful for arresting excessive mucous discharges. Because of its rich catechins content, it is used as a mouthwash or gargle for pharyngitis, laryngitis, gingivitis and stomatitis. It is reported that Acacia catechu has hypoglycemic 4 activity and catechins of Acacia catechu has 5-6 hepatoprotective, antipyretic and digestive properties . Acacia catechu is used in the treatment of diarrhoea and throat infection because the catechin present in it imparts 7 astringent activity .
