Acacia catechu (Leguminosae), commonly known as black catechu or cutch. Ayurveda recognizes the use of Acacia catechu heartwood (known as Khadira) in treating various conditions. Acacia catechu is highly valuable for its powerful astringent and antioxidant properties. Acacia catechu extract is derived from heartwood of the tree and is known to contain catechins, which have wide range of therapeutic actions.

Catechins have significant antioxidant and 1antimicrobial effects . Acacia catechu extract has been

used for treating fever, leucorrhoea, piles and 2erysipelas . It is also used in treatment of haemoptysis,

3gonorrhoea and chest infection . Acacia catechu extract is useful for arresting excessive mucous discharges. Because of its rich catechins content, it is used as a mouthwash or gargle for pharyngitis, laryngitis, gingivitis and stomatitis.

It is reported that Acacia catechu has hypoglycemic 4 activity and catechins of Acacia catechu has

5-6hepatoprotective, antipyretic and digestive properties . Acacia catechu is used in the treatment of diarrhoea and throat infection because the catechin present in it imparts

7astringent activity .

Acacia catechu extract is considered safe by US FDA and is included in GRAS [Generally Recognized As Safe] list.
