What is Standards Based Grading?
• SBG is the process by which teachers assess, record and communicate proficiency levels on the Common Core Learning Standards in ELA and Math and in all graded subjects
What is Standard Based Grading?
SBG uses a 1-4 proficiency scale to determine if a student is proficient in a standard or objective.
1=Below Standards2=Meets Basic Standards3=Meets Proficiency Standards4=Exceeds Proficiency StandardsNA= Not Assessed
As teachers, we can see if a student is proficient in a standard/objective/skill
How is Standard Based Grading different from Assessment Based
Grading?ABG uses tests, quizzes, homework, etc to determine a grade (the grade can be numeric or a letter grade) So if a student doesn’t turn in several homework assignments, they may receive a lower “grade” Parents do not get a true picture of if their child meets proficiency on a standard, skill, objective.
What Standards?
• The Diocese of Buffalo curriculum is the Common Core.
• The Common Core Standards are very specific skills or objectives that students must be able to demonstrate proficiency in.
How do I do this?
• As a teacher, you develop a lesson plan to teach one or several standards. Clearly state the standard(s) on the lesson and post for students to see.
• When you assess to see if the students are able to meet proficiency, your assessments should correlate to the standards that you taught.

Assessment
• There are several ways to assess proficiency-observation – projects - group work -centers- tests – quizzes - workbook pages – drawings – exit tickets – technology – fist to five – tell your parner
To get a good understanding of whether a student is proficient, teachers must assess multiple times and in different ways

Recording Standards Based GradesStandards Based Grades can be recorded in various ways.
• If using a gradebook, teachers can enter the standard instead of an assignment and record proficiency level by student.
• If not using a gradebook, teachers can use a spreadsheet to record proficiency level

How do I communicate this?
The Standards Based Report Cards have the ELA and Math Common
Core Standards listed. These standards should be graded with a 1-4 orNA if you did not teach or assess a particular standard, skill, objectiveThe “Grade” could be a letter A-D, an Average 0-100% or a 1-4
How do I enter this on the SBRC
• Log in to https://esd.eschooldata.com• You will see a list of the classes that you teach• Right click on the class and choose ERC Grade Entry• A screen will come up that will allow you to enter a
1-4• If you have not yet taught or assessed a standard,
you can either leave it blank or enter NA for Not Assessed
• Religion and General Comments are entered through the Homeroom Class.
In the End• Your coordinator or principal will run the report cards and you can view
the report card in whole. If you need to make changes, you must be in the grade entry window set up by your school.
• Once the report cards are finalized, the coordinator or principal will do a Final Run. This will archive the report card so that you can see the report card through the student’s portfolio.
• Principals know that this is new and will take some time. If you plan your lessons and assessments to the Common Core Math and ELA Standards and integrate content from Religion, Social Studies, Science, etc – you will be able to identify where a student is proficient or in need of more practice. You will then be able to communicate with parents on what skills students need to work on.
