Stanford NotebookStanford Travels Cross Country to Face Duke on Saturday

Stanford will face its fi rst road test of the season on Saturday, as the Cardinal face the Duke Blue • Devils in Durham, N.C.Marks Stanford’s second trip to North Carolina in last three seasons, as the Cardinal faced Wake • Forest in Winston-Salem in 2009.Also marks Stanford’s 11th cross country trip dating back to 1971 and fi fth venture to the East • Coast since 1997.Other recent cross country trips in addition to the game at Wake Forest in 2009 include contests • at Navy in 2005 (W, 41-38), Boston College in 2002 (L, 27-34) and at North Carolina in 1997 (L, 17-28).Stanford also played at Boston College in 1980 (L, 13-30) and played three straight seasons at • Penn State (1974-76), all resulting in losses...the Cardinal posted wins at Duke in 1972 (10-6) and at Army (38-3) in 1971.Approximate air mileage between San Jose International and Raleigh-Durham is 2,370 miles.•

GAME 2 | STANFORD at DUKE | SEPTEMBER 10, 2011 | 12:30 p.m. PT

#7/6 Stanford 57, San Jose State 3September 3, 2011 | Stanford, CA STANFORD, Calif. – - Stanford ushered in the David Shaw Era with a dominating 57-3 victory over visiting San Jose State before an announced crowd of 47,816 at Stanford Stadium. Heisman Trophy candidate Andrew Luck completed 17 of 26 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for another as the Cardinal posted its highest point total in a season opener since 1969. After freshman Jordan Williamson opened the scoring with a 23 yard fi eld goal at the 4:37 mark of the fi rst quarter, Luck capped off a nine play, 70-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run just before the end of the fi rst period. Following a Spartan turnover on its next possession, Luck connected with tight end Zach Ertz for a 13-yard touchdown to boost the lead to 17-0. Wil-liamson’s second fi eld goal of the day – a 37-yarder at the 9:48

mark – extended the lead to 20-0. Stanford increased its lead to 27-0 with 2:25 left before half when Luck connected with Ryan Hewitt on a two-yard touchdown pass play. Running back Stepfan Taylor’s two touchdown runs highlighted a 16-point third quarter, helping the Cardinal boost its lead to 43-3. Stanford added two more touchdowns in the fi nal period, the fi rst coming on a 16-yard run by Tyler Gaffney, followed by a 39-yard touchdown pass from Brett Nottingham to tight end Coby Fleener which closed the scoring at the 9:04 mark. The Cardinal defense limited the Spartans to just 26 yards in rushing, with linebacker Shayne Skov recording a team-high seven tackles. The win was Stanford’s ninth in a row dating back to last season, the program’s longest winning streak since 1951.It also marked the 11th time in the last 27 games dating back to 2009 that Stanford had scored 40 or more points in a game.
