>> Municipalitypartners with Eskomto help manage energydemand during peakperiodJYOTHI LALDAS

HOME-OWNERS in Ballito andsurrounds will soon joinhands with the KwaDukuza

Municipality (KDM) and Eskom in aneffort to reduce electricity demand.

This comes as a result of the mu-nicipality and Eskom partnering toimplement the Integrated DemandManagement (IDM) Residential LoadManagement (RLM) project aimed atmanaging electrical demand duringpeak energy use periods.

The project, now in its secondphase, will see geyser control devic-es (also called switches, receiversor relays) connected to geysers en-abling them to be switched on andoff remotely from 6pm to 8pm daily(peak time). Areaswhichwill fall intothe project include Ballito, TinleyManor, Sheffield Beach, Salt Rock,Shakaskraal, Umhlali, Shakas Rock,Port Zimbali and Fox Hill.

Speaking at a press briefing atKwaDukuza chambers last Friday,Eskom IDMmanager Sibusiso Tsha-balala said the installations will beat no cost to residents.

“The aim here is to reduce thestrain on the electricity grid. Geysersuse up to 50 per cent of your house-hold electricity consumption whichmakes them the ideal starting pointfor electricity demand managementintheresidentialsector.Themainad-vantage of the load managementsystem is that the relay system canswitch theheating element off duringpeak demand periods.”

He said that the project is neededbecause Eskom’s residential cus-tomers consume around 17.5 percent of the total electricity generated

with their demand at peak periodsamounting tomore than 30 per cent.

“Helping residential customersmanage their electricity require-ments better will have a significantimpact on the overall demand forenergy, while also achieving costbenefits for residents.”

Tshabalala added that many peo-ple worry that they will not have

hot water during the period that thegeyser is switched off, however, thiswill not be the case.

“The load control system willswitch off the power supply to thegeyser only during peak periods.Even when the power has beenswitched off, the water in the geysershould be sufficiently hot for normaluse.”

Nationwide Electrical, an EnergyService Company (ESCo), has beenappointed to implement the projectin KwaDukuza. According to Nation-wide project manager Mervyn Ram-samy, qualified technicians havebeen appointed to visit homes be-tween February and July.

“Only approved, trained and com-petent technicians with identifica-

tion from KwaDukuza Municipality,Eskom and Nationwide will visithomes to install the switches.Accessshould only be granted to techni-cians who display their identitycards on their safety vests.”

Formore information,contact thecall centre on 086 122 8222 or visitwww.nationwideelectrical.co.za orwww.eskom.co.za/idm.

A source close to the investi-gation said the police werelooking at whether officers

had interfered with the crimescene. “They are looking at wheth-er the officers in the kombiwere, orhad been, involved in extortion andif so from who they extorted.

“They are also looking atwhether other officers may havetried to derail the investigation andwhat their motive for doing so

could have been,” said the source.“One theory is that there was an

argument in the vehicle over mon-ey before the shooting took place.

“There is also evidence pointingthat either all or just one of theofficers in the kombi had beendrinking alcohol as both open andclosed bottles of liquor were foundat the scene,” said the source.

Hawks’ spokesperson PaulRamaloko confirmed more officershad been called in for questioningbut would not give further details.

SAPS provincial communica-tions officer Captain ThulaniZwane would not comment on thedetails but confirmed further ques-tioning of police officers was un-derway.

“We can’t comment on specificsin this sensitive investigation butthe police are making various linesof inquiry. The fourth officer whowas present in the police vehicle atthe time of the shooting has beenreleased fromhospital. Aswith anyinvestigation he has been inter-viewed,” said Zwane.

Mokoena, a career police officer, was promoted to lieutenant in2011. According to official policerecords he has not been foundguilty of an internal offence since1987. The offence was not listed.

BonganiXulu,studentConstableThobani’sfather,saidhissonhadal-ways wanted to be a police officer.

“When he was growing up hewould walk with me to the gate onmy way to work. He would some-times have my hat on his head.

“After completing Grade 12, hegot a clerical job at Stanger policestation and that was his first stepinto the police force,” said Xulu.

He said what hurt most is thefact that he knew the officer al-leged to have killed his son.

He said his other son, also a stu-dent constable, was not taking hisbrother’s death well. “He is dis-turbedby this and now,asa family,we are looking at arranging the fu-neral. We have a son who [...] hasnot been the same since he heardabout his brother’s death,” he said.

Bongani will be buried in Man-yane, Nkandla on Saturday.

>> Happy Valley to be electrified after protestsMERVYN KRISHNA

ANGRY residents of Happy Val-ley near Glenhills took to thestreets in protest of poor ser-

vice delivery, barricading the roadleading to the village with burningtyres and rocks.

The protest started on Fridaynight and continued into the earlyhours of Saturday morning.

Community members were de-manding electricity in the area fromthe KwaDukuza Municipality.

Other concerns included tarredroads and street lights.

KwaDukuza mayor RicardoMthembu addressed the communityon Saturday morning, saying HappyValley together with areas from all

27 wards will be electrified.“Come2015, themunicipalitywill

have zero electricity backlogs.”Councillor Sundeep Oudhram,

who is the chairperson of infrastruc-ture and technical portfolio, said onFriday last week the adjudicationprocess for a contractor was com-pleted.

LADY is a bit of a filthy wordtoday amongst the politicallycorrect and that other speciesthat leaves me reaching for mytrusty axe, liberals.

The word is often spit out bythe above as if to epitomise asubservient, delicate petal, sit-ting at home waiting for her hus-band, combing her generouslocks while whipping up threecourse meals, allowing herself totitter at the excitement of herspouse’s bi-monthly gift of themissionary position.

Being called a lady todayis global anathema; possibly be-cause it doesn’t sell very well.

Values (something we associ-ate with ladies) hardly titillatethe senses or wallet as readilyas being able to pick up the latestchick-mag and read stimulatingarticles about Brazilian waxes, new and improved ways to or-gasm ora vajacial, which for theuninformed, is a facial for thevagina.

Yes, gentle reader, you readcorrectly: The latest thing in fe-male beauty treatments is adeepcleanse for your lady garden.

At this point I need to statethat I did not learn of vajacialsthrough experience.

Rather, I learnedof this ‘proce-

dure’ through an article on theinternet which, due to my incre-dulity, led to another write-upand another, until I had satisfiedmyself that indeed, steamingone’s heavenly pond isapparent-ly essential to being a happy, ful-filled woman.

Hot on the heels of the vaja-cial is the increase in female blog-gers I have stumbled upon in thelast week that make it their mis-sion to berate women who arenot scaling the corporate ladderin their Louboutins.

To paraphrase one troglodyte,“We fought long and hard to beable toplay on an even field withmen; women who stay at hometo raise children set the move-ment back decades.”

Evidently late for her vajacialappointment and plagued withitching, the blogger excretes aRadical Feminism 101 lesson inwhich she tries to bully womenwho voluntarily remain home toraise their children or work part-time into getting out there andobliterating anything cursedwith testosterone.

While wemay think that offer-ing their lady gardens up to thealtar of faux beauty treatmentsand angry female clots has be-come the guiding light for ouryoung women, research indi-cates that millennials in particu-lar are pushing against the tide ofangst and consumerism to em-brace traditionalism.

According to Forbes, womenare also leading a new ‘quietrevolution’ in which they giveup corporate climbing to workfrom home, although not neces-sarily as ‘home-makers’, but en-trepreneurs.

And in her book Lean In , Fa-cebook’s chief operating officer,Sheryl Sandberg, cites a studyindicating that “43% of highlyqualified women with childrenare leaving careers or off-ramp-ing for a period of time.”

Job satisfaction and quality oflife are climbing steadily to over-take the desire for lots of things, and having the ability to raisechildren while working for one-self -orsimplyworking foroneself

A job, a lady,and hervajacial

JUST a couple of months after we bidfarewell to the pervy man in red from theNorthPole, Hallmark and florists the worldover demand more of our money for heart-shaped chocolates, flowers which aremarked up 300% and cards with pre-print-ed sentiments from Helen Steiner Riceand others of her ilk.

Being the product of a broken home, with many failed relationships and theodd restraining order in my wake, I haveplenty of reasons to be cynical about love.

However, like Christians get upset aboutthe commercialisation of Christmas, I getinexplicably angry when corporate greedcapitalises upon love, transforming it into

another excuse to go further into one’soverdraft.

This is not to say that I am gullibleenough to believe that love comes freely.Thereare gifts to bebought, dates tobepaidfor, weddings to bebankruptedby, andun-less you’re one of the lucky ones, a messydivorce and alimony to follow.

I have often wondered how Valentine’sDay is celebrated in polygamous societies.Does our esteemed president make a weekout of it, taking out one wife every eveningat taxpayers’ expense?

Or does he spoil a different wife everyyear?

Perhaps he hosts an annual game ofpoker with his wives, the winner of whichis showered with presidential pleasures onthe 14th.

Single people, I believe should follow theexample of a friend of mine, who hosts ananti-Valentines-day party every year.

When surrounded by the nauseatingheightened levels of love, lust and expendi-ture, it’s better to be out and about withfriends than home alone snivelling intoyour worn copy of Bridget Jones’ diary.

After this, there is Easter to be endured, with children hyped up on chocolate run-ning amok around our neighbourhoods.

Thereafter,wehave the elections andac-companying shenanigans.

But maybe, if we’re lucky, we will get afew months of peace after that before thefireworks start.

- is an appealing op-tion.

This slow tide ofchange should bringa wave of encour-agement to the cra-ven and cynicalamongst us whoweep at the mentionof anything vajacialor feminist.

But it should alsoremind us that thetraditional valuesassociated with be-ing a lady, whichhave been smirkedat for so long - self-respect, diligence, temperance, morals- still hold weight.

Theyare now ac-tively being soughtby young womenwho are again com-fortable and coura-geous enoughto place characterand family abovethe goddess of self-absorbtion.

MAKING VALENTINE'S DAYspecial on a budget >> Express love without spending a fortune

Avoid equating love with consump-tionIt's easy to get bogged down in the buyingfrenzy surrounding Valentine's Day, as re-tailers vie to rake in some decent profitsfrom romance-inspired lovers.Love isn't about what you give in goodsthough; it's about what you give by way oftime, attention, and acknowledgment ofthe other person. And none of those canbe purchased.Once you view Valentine's Day from theperspective of it being about acknowledg-ing and celebrating your love by spendingtime together, it's easier to realise that abudget Valentine is still a perfect date op-portunity.

Minimize rather than do withoutOne of the tricks to saving money on Valen-tine's Day is to still indulge in some of thetraditional Valentine's accessories, but to

reduce them. For example, instead giving her a dozen redroses, give her one, held in your teeth, andaccompanied by your best impression of aSpanish dancer.Or, give him a special brand of chocolatebar instead of a whole box of expensivechocolates.

Make your ownA homemade card is always more mean-ingful than a purchased one. It says not on-ly what you write in it but also "I took thetime to make this because I care enoughabout you to give that time."Other things can be made too, for gifts.Draw on your own skills when making gifts;for example, if you're a keen gardener, givesomething from the garden; if you're akeen cook, make something delectable; ifyou're a keen outdoor enthusiast, give afully guided nature walk or a lesson in your

favorite sport.

Thinkofsomethingyoucandoforyour loveAn excellent way to show your love can bethrough making love coupons or vouchers. These can contain promises that rangefrom the mundane to the downright sexy, all depending on your willingness to dothings for your love.Make a large heart from constructionpaper, attach as many coupons asyou're willing to give. Some exam-ples include:

This voucher is good for one week of dishwashing by me, no questions asked. This voucher is good for guaranteeing one

season of your favorite TV show to beshared with me. And a promise that therewill be no channel surfing during saidshow.

This voucher is good for one loving footmassage. To be redeemed any time.

This voucher is good for one massage ina bubble bath. Any time of day or night.

This voucher is good for a long snog infront of a movie of your choice.

This voucher is good for the night of yourwildest dreams. To be redeemed whenyou're in the mood.Exchange cheesy but sweet gifts that re-mind you of one another, for whatever rea-son.You can either initiate this yourself, or sug-gest it as a Valentine's tradition for the twoof you. The item should be very affordable, and recall some experience that the twoof you have had together. Make a nice cardthat explains the gift but don't be toocheesy in what you write. For example:

A plastic surfboard keyring. Write thatit reminds you of the month the two of youspent surfing and how it was there thatyou realised you wanted to surf the rest ofyour life with him.

A brooch featuring a computer andmouse. Write that it is a reminder of howthe two of you met online and how you'llnever forget the beauty of her first smileby video chat.

Give timeGiving time is the ultimate romantic ges-ture. It will mean a great deal if you're usu-ally stretched for time and you choose togive up the whole day to spend with yourbeloved, doing things together that havenothing to do with work, raising a family, paying bills, etc.

Banish the mundane and just allowthe day to be about the two of you togeth-er.

Create a special evening at home to-getherMake a meal in which you go to extra trou-ble. It doesn't have to be expensive food;

Be creative with flowers. Write a simple Valentine’s message for your loved one. Send a box of sweeties saying what you feel.

just spend time makingit more complicatedand interesting thanthe usual dailymeals.

Or, set up a video oronline game that thetwo of you can getdeeply involved in, pro-vided both of you reallyenjoy such games.

StargazeStep out to check outthe night sky. If youhave to travel, add pic-nic rugs, a thermos ofwarm drink, somesnack bars, and a fulltank of fuel.

Find somewhereon the outskirts wherethe sky is clear.

Take along a starchart and look for starsthat you know.

Choose a star justfor the two of you andmake a promise to lookfor it every Valentine'sDay.

NEWS

DURBAN will be taken to the extremewhen the awe-inspiring action sportsathletes of Nitro Circus unleash theirunique death-defying moves at MosesMabhida Stadium on Wednesday, Feb-ruary 19 as part of their first ever SouthAfrican tour.

Led by legendary action sports starand Nitro Circus founder Travis Pastra-na, the Nitro Circus Live crew consist of40 of the world’s best action sportsathletes, who defy the laws of gravitywith innovative freestyle motocross,BMX and skateboarding aerial anticsoff their multi-million dollar set and fa-mous 50-foot high Nitro Gigant-A-Ramp.

The heart-stopping show also in-cludes the crew pushing the boundarieson skates, scooters and a range of crazycontraptions including a drinks cooler,Barbie car, toy trike, shopping trolleyand bodyboard. The event is, in es-sence, perfection within chaos.

Speaking exclusively to the Wit-ness, Aaron Fotheringham - arguablythe most phenomenal and compellingof the athletes - said: “It’s going to beunlike anything South African fanshave ever seen before.”

Nitro Circus originated as a smallDVD series filmed in Pastrana’s Mary-land backyard and rapidly evolved intoa successful MTV show and later a fea-ture film. Nitro Circus Live was launchedin 2010 and has since captured theimagination of fans worldwide with astring of sell-out shows and record-breaking crowds.

Fresh off wrapping up their firstNorth American tour by celebrating the

dream destinations. “I’m super excitedto come to SA and the warm, coastaltown of Durban sounds good to me. Ilove marking places I’ve been to off mymap and Africa is definitely next on mylist. We all love going to different coun-tries and seeing how the crowd re-sponds to the show - it’s always lots offun.”

Fotheringham, affectionatelyknown as Wheelz, is the world’s pre-eminentwheelchairmotocrossathlete.The 22-year-old was born with SpinaBifida, a birth defect of the spinal cord, which resulted in him having no usageof his legs, and endeavours to changethe world’s perception of people inwheelchairs by doing nigh-impossiblestunts.

The daredevil holds the distinctionofbeingthefirsteverpersontosuccess-fully perform a wheelchair backflip (onJuly 13, 2006), double backflip (on Au-gust 26, 2010) and frontflip (on August25, 2012).

Wheelz admits the crew’s successhas exceeded their expectations andfeels it’s the perfect time to introducetheir crazy antics to South African sup-porters.

“When it [Nitro Circus Live] firststarted, I don’t know if we ever expect-ed it to grow so big. In the last coupleof years, we have toured Australia, NewZealand, Europe, China and NorthAmerica, so the time is definitely rightto bring the show to South African fansfor the first time,” he said.

The Las Vegas native credited thecrew’s versatility and ability to amal-gamate their skills as key to their ap-

peal and success. “You don’t usuallysee the world’s biggest tricks in FMX[freestyle motocross], BMX, WCMX[wheelchair motocross] and skate all inone place, but somehow with theseshows, we have managed to gather allof the gnarliest and most skilled ath-letes and brought them into one show,”said Wheelz.

While playing his cards close to hischest,WheelzdidvowthatDurbanfansare in for a number of surprises, with thecrew planning to unveil unique tricks atMoses Mabhida Stadium.

“The best part about a Nitro Circus

Live show is it changes every single timewe go out and perform. We’ll definitelyhave some special new tricks for SouthAfrican fans, but you’ll have to comeout and see them for yourself.”

Aside from thrilling spectators, thecrew also aim to help boost interest inaction sports in South Africa throughtheir three events. “We love bringingmore attention to the action sportsscene and I personally love to give WC-MX more exposure,” concluded Wheelz.
