Parents/Guardians:

Good progress continues to be made on theconstruction of our new elementary. Whilefrom a visual standpoint it may not seem thatmuch is getting done, a lot of progress is beingmade on the infrastructure and details of thedesign.

December was a tragic month in our country;however, good can sometimes come with thebad. Fortunately, we are a district in the proc-ess of building a new school, and we can takethe lessons learned to make our school as safeas we can for our children and staff.

Many hours during the months of Decemberand January were spent looking at the securityelements of our new school design. Discussionswere held on everything from the type ofbuzzer entry systems in use to the direction thedoors swing. We believe we have looked at allthe details and feel confident we have made thebest security choices to protect the childrenand staff of our school.

The district continues to thank you for yoursupport with this building project. It is some-thing our community and children truly needand deserve.

Sincerely,Michelle GlodtElementary Principal

Construction Update

There will be a private screening at the State 123 Theater in Pierre of The Buffalo King, apowerful film that tells the story of Scotty Philip, the man who saved the buffalo and whowas one of the most influential figures in South Dakota history.

Free to the community of Pierre, Fort Pierre, and all of the organizers and participants inthe Scotty Philip Memorial Ride, the movie will be shown Saturday, February 9 at 11:00 a.m.

The Nowlin Town Productions documentary follows the remarkable story of James "Scotty"Philip, one of South Dakota's most influential figures. Often described as "the man whosaved the buffalo," Scotty Philip was also a study in turn-of-the-century US history. He mar-ried a Cheyenne woman and forged a life unparalleled in accomplishment and success beforehis sudden death at age 53 in Fort Pierre. Compelling, historic, deeply human, The Buf-falo King is a story about immigration, ranching, indigenous peoples, and the grit and courageof our forefathers.

The screening is sponsored by the State 123, Verendrye Museum, Inc., and Nowlin TownProductions. For more information about The Buffalo King, or to view the trailer, visit "TheBuffalo King" on Facebook. For more information, contact Justin Koehler at 303-328-7745.

Good Health HabitsAvoid close contact. Avoid close contact with peoplewho are sick. When you are sick, keep your distancefrom others to protect them from getting sick too.Stay home when you are sick.If possible, stay home from work, school, and errandswhen you are sick. You will help prevent others fromcatching your illness. A first indicator that a child shouldstay home is if he/she is running a fever. Children with afever will be sent home from school.Cover your mouth and nose.Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughingor sneezing. It may prevent those around you from get-ting sick.Clean your hands.Washing your hands often will help protect you fromgerms.Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly bydroplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze ortalk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses ofpeople who are nearby. Less often, a person might alsoget flu by touching a surface or object that has flu viruson it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects.Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects that maybe contaminated with germs like the flu can help slowthe spread of influenza.
