Public Open House On March 14, 2019 Denver Parks and Recreation along with Russell + Mills Studios held a Public Open House at the Stapleton Recreation Center.
Large boards greeted adults and kids with a new concept design for each of the playgrounds.
The “What We Heard” booklet was available for those that had not been part of previous outreach and input sessions to understand how the concepts were developed.
Participants were able to review proposed equipment through imagery, eye level sketches, sections and enlargement plans. They were also able to vote on the which equipment option they would most like to see at Central Playground and gave additional feedback via comment cards.
In addition to playground boards a craft activity was held for the children to decorate and help design a bird themed

I like the climbing walls. My two-year old niece plays does a lot of climbing and it seems to me to be a learning experience in risk and safety and builds her confidence.
The nature concept is very appealing. Lots of shade is a plus

Online Survey
Open ended responses: 1. Would love tall slides and more climbing areas 2. I was hoping to see more unique structures for exploring and climbing like the
wood insects and the fort built in 2018 at the new Wash Park playground. 3. Lots of different play options and cool slides, working water feature! 4. I like how much it looks so natural and has a lot of natural environment things to it. 5. I like the design and suggested areas I’m just wondering what is it going to happen
with all the water features during winter months? 6. Seems like much more to do than there currently is 7. Make sure there are swings for bigger kids and also shade 8. Other communities seem to be putting in place more nature-oriented themed
playgrounds that are less rubber/plastic/metal and actually really exciting. See this video of McKay Lake Park in Westminster for inspiration. https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=QX_BnJRw_Xw
9. Nice variety of structures and good for a range of ages. 10. I like option 1, keeping existing climbing boulder and wall. 11. The playground is designed for kids different age-groups - that’s super important
for the amount of the families living around Stapleton. It is open and has so many new option to play
12. Fun stuff for kids and the park needs and update 13. Love how inclusive the design is. Also thing it’s great that there are more items (like
trampolines, etc.) that typical playgrounds don’t have. 14. Denver Parks and Recreation This all seems fantastic, although it blows my mind
that you are continuing to upgrade parks that have been developed in parts of our neighborhood that have been built for over 10 years. Meanwhile, in Wicker Park, we live adjacent to an off-limits “park”, one of the largest in Stapleton, and less than 300 yards from the most demanded new (Northfield) high school and athletic fields, with no trails, no sidewalks, wild/predatory animals, large sticker bushes, and filled with trash from students (who use the overgrown field to hide/smoke) and the construction debris blowing south from Beeler/NorthEnd . Everybody please “like” and contact Denver Parks. It’s time to start blowing the horn. Brand new neighborhoods in Beeler and NorthEnd are getting SUPREME parks, water features, disc golf, etc....while we can’t allow our kids to walk to school without “illegally” trespassing through the FENCED-OFF field or walking the perimeter along Stapleton’s busiest street. You can’t even park your car in front of your own house because the metal fence is installed ON THE CURB with no room to open your car passenger door. We want walkways for the students and trashcans immediately.
15. Water plays option 16. Love budged option 1. Will have great new things for the kids to enjoy 17. Slide area. Is it for kids in wheelchairs? 18. Will you be taking out the already existing trees? The trees in the plan will take
another 10-15 years to mature and actually offer any shade. Right now the biggest problem is the lack of shade at the play area of Central Park. Will there be plenty of trash and recycling receptacles? How about a compost receptacle?
19. There needs to be more areas with shade cover. Denver has some of the strongest and most days of sun, and it is surprising how little shade is provided to protect young children from harmful sun exposure.
20. It doesn’t have enough younger kid play areas. There are also too many mounds and not enough swings
21. I asked my 9 year old to review. He was impressed and excited about the range of planned improvements. I like that it shows more mature trees, I hope this level of landscaping is truly part of the final plan. I like that the rolling landscape (changes in elevation) are part of the design. Would love to see “no smoking on this playground” signs. :)
22. Something new! 23. Love how it provides entertainment for a wide range of kids! 24. The current playground is in bad shape. I’m relieved that it’s going to be fixed. I
liked the new options for toddlers and preschoolers. I was glad to see emphasis on inclusive play for kiddos with physical disabilities.
25. I feel that there can be much more active options. 26. These things seem less likely to breakdown as quickly as the current playground 27. I wish there were more structural play areas. In the ‘free’ play spaces, my kid tends
to get lost rather than running and burning off energy. 28. Looks like more activities and will engage more types of play/kids 29. Seems like there will be a better variety.
30. Variety and nature 31. I really like the changes I just cannot tell for sure for there is as much open free
space for running I know my kids love to run on the turf 32. Using the current strengths of the playscape, just improving it 33. Invest the money for new parks in underserved neighborhoods. 34. Young children use and benefit from these areas the most. Currently, more than half
the park is geared to much older children who rarely seem to actually play at the park but often misuse/vandalize it. It would be nice to see a larger area for younger children.
35. Love he natural elements that will be incorporated. Strongly dislike that this update is 3 years away!!!
36. Lots of variety! Fun activities. Turf seems to get torn up tho. 37. I love the variety and it seems to appeal to many ages 38. I like the nature adventure, slide and climbing area. 39. lots of interactive activities 40. There’s more play options with this updated park! 41. Love all of the different activity options, especially the spinners, water misters, zip
line, and climbing tower. 42. Love the variety for all ages 43. Love the zip line and all the climbing and sliding options. This park desperately
needs more picnic tables and shade. 44. Good variety of activities 45. Fun additions/improvements. Some items I fear will be ruined quickly with heavy
wear&tear and easy vandalism. 46. Great mix of different features/activities 47. This is one of the few playgrounds that has a little something for all the age groups.
It appears to reduce the amount and not allow for much visual supervision from the parents. The water features would be better served near the current, frequently non-working, water features instead of intermixed. A zip line isn’t so great as only one kid can use it at a time. Not thrilled with this plan, what is currently there seems like a better fit for the neighborhood.
48. This just looks and feels like the kind of place I want to spend the afternoon at with my family. I love the variety of features, the additional shade, and more water is a huge plus
49. Trampolines, water misters, zip line! 50. It does not seem like a very creative use of the space 51. Unique 52. Lots of exciting options. Does feel like many are designed for use by a single child
at one time though (zip line, climbing wall, individual swings). 53. Lots of variety 54. So many interesting things for kids! 55. Good variety of activities for children in a highly visited park. 56. I like the climbing walls (because my kids climb the wall anyway) and hill slides. 57. Don’t love the sand feature but otherwise awesome 58. Doesn’t need tax dollars wasted on already nice parks. 59. such better use of the topo than currently there. the boulder wall is awesome to
add to that retaining wall. Like the added trees - it gets really hot and there is virtually no shade there currently.
60. So many fun areas and different types of play 61. Many different play features for children to enjoy 62. Trampolines are sooooo dangerous! 63. More things to do and better use of space than current. 64. So many awesome options, natural areas, water, climbing, swinging, slides! 65. Existing area is in dire need of fixing and updating. Proposed concept caters to
both baby/toddler and 5-10 year olds, which I believe is extremely important. Most/ all of existing play structures in Stapleton are small and uninteresting for kids older than “toddler age.”
66. Some of these seem like they’ll break and be difficult to maintain like the blue hill slide, zip line and trampolines.
67. the previous astroturf has already been destroyed - they would need to put in a better quality product or expect the same thing to happen. The artificial turf mounds and river never seem to be used currently so I don’t think these are a necessary addition. That space would be better utilized for more climbing stuctures
68. so much variety!
69. the park is a dump, improvement is much much needed. but it’s not just the playground that needs help. there are lights out/broken, the trees have barely grown past what they were planted at years ago, the water pools on the soccer fields, the pond fills with trash all summer long, most of the park looks dead at all times. it is really sad that this is such an eyesore as it is central to stapleton.
70. like the addition of a trampoline 71. I like it all 72. I like the many options and it seems to appeal to different age groups. I like that there’s
still a toddler area 73. I like the natural elements of water and sand, as well as the active elements of sliding
hills and mounds and climbing walls. Most of it seems like it will hold up well, but there are a few pieces that seem like they will malfunction quickly and never be replaced, including the trampolines and water arch sprayers.
74. The river water feature is wonderful. Love the trampolines. 75. Like having a climbing area., 76. Lots of different options 77. Love the climbing wall(s) 78. Options. Shade. Incorporates special needs. Huge variety. 79. This design does not bring it up to date enough to today’s best parks. The park will
need to be replaced again within the next 5 years if standards matter. Why not spend the money now to have it last for a decade or so. See examples of “better” parks in Austin, TX & Atlanta, GA. There also should be large scale plans to deal with the sun with shade covers.
80. love all the different types of experiences and areas 81. The playground equipment was rarely used, glad to see that eliminated for other play
equipments. I’m assuming the trees in the plan are not just the existing but adding more tree cover. This playground is fun in the spring and fall but has always lacked shade and been WAY too hot to play at in summer. My kids would enjoy most of the features of this playground.
82. Still don’t understand why Central Park gets an update before other playgrounds that are older. Boo
83. I think It is very interactive and choice selective for individual wants from a child’s perspective.
84. It appears there are many landscape/floral features in this plan. I am very skeptical about the care and maintenance that is available to maintain this type of plantings. The plantings in the park have been poorly maintained to date. I think the nicest aspect to current playground are the purple mountains. the covering on them has not worked.
85. Love the toddler area! 86. a great improvement that includes even more variety of play options. Love the
accessible trampoline as well as the climbing wall with net. 87. More options 88. I like the initial design, but there are a few concerns. We have to think in terms of
the populations that will be using the park. I think that their is an over-abundance of adolescence areas and not enough areas for adults to use for outside calisthenics play park, see: http://calisthenics-playparc.com/en/home/. I think over time the use of the trampolines and zip lines will not be used sufficiently, but something like a calisthenics park would get used often by older adults that want to remain active as they age.
89. The incorporation of multiple different structures for various ages including water feature.
90. Addition of water misters, tire swing, toddler roller slide, zip line are all great ideas

Open ended responses: 1. Lots of small disparate play structures, would prefer one big connected play
area or theme 2. I like how natural it looks 3. It is well designed and a lot of sensory and pretended play is
incorpotated 4. Love the nature adventure area 5. I like the nature adventure area. I’d need to understand what that would
include, but I hope it’s really interactive. 6. There is not enough base flow in the ditch to support an “adventure center”
around it. 7. Love that it is mimicking nature. It’s so important for kids to have to experience
nature and be creative when they play and take some risks and have to build balance.
8. Looks more developed than now with shrubs 9. It is fine how it is. Waste of tax money. 10. I’d like to see some senior play equipment and an agility dog track 11. It feels like nature is woven into this design. It also feels like it has younger kids
in mind, which is great as the Central Park plan seems to have slightly older kids in mind. It’s a good balance for 2 playgrounds in close proximity to each other.
12. The sand part is great already but to have a canopy over it would be even better! Plus, the playgrounds are hidden which is a fun idea but not great for watching smaller kids
13. The area around the sand park is great! It’s such a popular destination for young kiddos to play. I’m so happy that this area is finally getting renovated. I was the first homeowner to close in the area just south of this park in January 2006. I had two kiddos born in 2007 and 2008. As luck has it, I had moved away but just moved back to this very same neighborhood with a new 4 month old now. I had recently had a conversation with an old neighbor about this very park. It was always getting negative feedback from the onset. The equipment has always been ill received by the kids (and parents). I’m a pretty easy going person and I can tell you this park ( the equipment east of the sand box), has been brought up in heated conversations since DAY ONE. So silly, really. It was supposed to invoke creative play perhaps? Fantastic idea, but in reality, kids want tire swings, slides, zip lines, things that moves their bodies in ways they can’t do on their own, etc. This park has the potential to be great. Everyone should stop thinking about what they think could help kids to be creative. Instead, how about make it the park the kids ask their parents to take them to? The park the kids WANT to go to?? Do parks have to be lame for insurance
reasons now? Maybe that’s why and the whole word has ruined parks. But if ever a park should be built, it should be the one that busts all the rules (or adheres to them by just a hair). Okay, please make this park cool!
14. I’m thankful that the park is being improved. But I think it could use more swings. The natural looking boulders and tree stumps are all the rage, but kids don’t play on them very long. Kids spend all their play time waiting in line to get a swing.
15. It needs more actives. 16. I only wish there were school aged children swings and heck maybe and adult
swing ! I am starting to get to the point where I’d like some things I can do at a playground too!!
17. The nature area seems very unique. The very small play structures that are just duplicated at every park are rarely utilized.
18. Current playground is always underwater so adding in a nature element with water will help with that problem!
19. Other play features new to Stapleton parks 20. I love all the nature elements. 21. good water feature updates 22. The natural play features are beautiful, the shade over the sand pit is a great
addition, and the elements for toddlers are wonderful. 23. Current structure non of the kids really like playing on it. I like the swings could
be used by older kids instead of the bucket seats. Not sure about the water features and river/stream. Is there going to be a pump ? Current water is minimal - mainly mosquito breeding ground.
24. I’m glad it has traditional play equipment like swings, slides and tire swing along with the natural play elements. Also, very excited about SHADE STRUCTURES!
25. Different and fun 26. I love the opportunity for exploration and imagination, not just a traditional
playground concept. 27. I love the shade over the sand pit. I love the nature adventure area. I wish there
were standard swings over a tire swing. 28. Love the access to the stream and natural play areas. Makes this park unique
and a safe way for kids to interact with nature, which we don’t have right now in stapleton.
29. I like the addition of a zip line, more climbing and the additional shade and trees
30. It seems to cater to a single age group 31. Wasted opportunity. Didn’t add anything in terms of playground to play on. Big
thumbs down. 32. Integrates natural features that are unique. My main concern: the current
play area floods very frequently. The park needs to take water drainage very seriously.
33. Love the water and bridges and trees, many paths to tie, great community area
34. Love that shade was added to the sandbox pit, shade is lacking in many parks in the area. Love that kore features were added by the sandpit so you can see more than one kids at a time if not all want to play in the sand. The water play area looks super fun.
35. It’s so great 36. Nature play area and structured play together. Well integrated into space. Can
we play there tomorrow? 37. Vast improvement 38. You are really maximizing the space and incorporating play structures that are
suitable for a wider range of ages. 39. Love the adventure trail! So fun! 40. I like the additional shade and play structures, plus the huge log chair kids can
climb on and sit in, and the tunnel and bridges. I can’t tell if there is interaction with water/stream, but I would like it if there is.
41. Love the water features! 42. There have been some drainage issues after rain and snow 43. I love the new ideas for the Structured play area as well as adding the stream to
play in. The nature adventure area also looks great, maybe a few more climbing features in that area would give more play options?
44. Really like the idea of a stream to explore 45. A nature inspired playground where kids can explore. Looks great! 46. Looks better than now. The shade over sand piy is an important feature. A higher
slide would be nice and more swings (bucket style). 47. Very natural and encourages creative play. Everything looks like it will hold up
well, and it fits in to the existing natural environment nicely. 48. Love the sun sail over the sand area bc it gets so hot otherwise. Love the nature
adventure. Looks amazing.
49. Love the shady, natural area. Nice to have trees and water in the city. Kids and adults will enjoy it.
50. Love the natural elements 51. love the more natural features! Yes 52. Looks inclusive, accessible and active 53. Love the nature play area! This would be a hit with my kids! 54. I love the added shade to the sandbox - very needed! The more shade the
better! 55. It has more varied activities for different age groups, it has shade that is almost
completely lacking at the current park (the sand area gets VERY hot), the stream will be so much fun for the kids, and it uses more of the existing space for the enjoyment of the community.
56. love all the nature space- so good for creativity 57. I’m curious how this plan will be finalized considering grading and elevations.
There is a KNOWN flooding issue with the existing playground so the design needs to accommodate the water and drainage. While I see this concept includes access from Spruce way (which I think is great and was missing before) the fact that Spruce way is at a much higher elevation needs to be considered. I’m concerned how this elevation change and the drainage will be worked out in final design. As a structural engineer, I’m familiar with dealing with elevation issues and changes, water drainage, and also how a great concept can turn into a junk final design once all factors are considered.
58. I like the tower slide, the hammock, most of the new features but not as many climbing options for older kids (middle school).
59. Like the swings but not enough play structures for older kids little pre teens
60. The birds nest climbing and slide structure looks like it may need maintenance often
61. I like the initial design, but there are a few design concerns. We have to think in terms of the “populations” that will be using the park. I think that their is an over-abundance of adolescence areas and not enough areas for adults to use for outside calisthenics play park, see: http://calisthenics-playparc.com/en/ home/. I think over time the use of the trampolines and zip lines will not be used sufficiently, but something like a calisthenics park would get used often by older adults that want to remain active as they age.
