CONTENT

Stage 1 Dance is a 20-credit subject taken over a full year. It consists of four areas of study:

Technique

Composition

Performance or Presentation

Response

2

ASSESSMENT

Assessment Type 1: Technique

Students will be assessed on their technique in 2 separate 90 minute classes. They will

participate as members of a group in a structured technique class, in which they

demonstrate the use of technical skills as a tool for communication and expression,

appropriate to the dance genre studied.

Assessment focuses on the development of physical skills such as posture and alignment,

placement, coordination, control, balance, flexibility, and strength, as relevant to the

specific dance genre. This area of study provides students with opportunities to gain

technical expertise as a means of developing expression, rather than as an end in itself.

Assessment Type 2: Composition

Students will complete 2 separate composition tasks. The composition(s) should be

approximately 1 minute each and involve exploration and innovation through:

manipulating movement in space, time, and energy

devising movement based on a specific idea or theme

developing movement by working through a process of improvisation, selection, and

refinement.

The creation of original dance material is the essence of this area of study. Students

reflect critically on their own work and the work of others. Students are encouraged to

keep a journal of the processes involved in this area of study in preparation for

extended studies at Stage 2

3

Assessment Type 3: Performance

For a 20-credit subject, performers are assessed on a total of 7 to10 minutes of dance work,

either in one performance or in two performances of 3 to 5 minutes each.

This area of study is intended to give students an overview of the process of creating and

presenting dance. Students are also given opportunities to review and evaluate the

processes and outcomes.

Assessment Type 4: Response.

This area of study aims to expand students’ knowledge and understanding of dance as an

art form. It enables students to gain skills in research, analysis, review, and reflection and

apply arts-specific terminology in the communication of thoughts and ideas. For a 20-credit

subject, two responses are required. One response should be based on historical

perspectives and the other should be based on a contemporary issue in dance. The

response should focus on the contribution that dance makes, or has made, to the life of a

community or cultural group. A response should be a maximum of 800 words if written or a

maximum of 5 minutes if oral, or the equivalent in multimodal form.

PRICING:

$340 per term for Thursday SACE workshop 4.30 - 6.30pm.

$170 per term for each technique class.

STAGE 2 - YEAR 12

Stage 2 Dance at Star Academy is a full year subject which is combined with Certificate III in

Dance.

SCHEDULE

THURSDAY 4.30 - 6.30PM

+ 2 TECHNIQUE CLASSES PER WEEK. PLEASE SEE WWW.STARACADEMY.COM.AU FOR FULL

SCHEDULE.

Stage 2 Dance is a 20-credit subject that consists of the following three areas of study:

Skills Development (choreography, technique, and a folio based on either the

choreography or the technique study)

Dance Perspectives

Group Production

ASSESSMENT

Assessment Type 1: Skills Development (50%)

This assessment type consists of three equal parts:

Choreography of up to 4 minutes that can comprise up to three separate dance

pieces if the student prefers — for example, one 4-minute piece, or two 2-minute

pieces, or three one minute and 20-second pieces

Technique: comprising a videoed technique demonstration class

Folio: a process-based evaluation of either the choreography or the technique. This

may include research and investigation into areas such as safe dance practices, body

conditioning, anatomy and kinesiology, cross training, and injury prevention.

5

Students choreograph one or more original and innovative works for solo, duo, trio, or larger

group performance, or dance(s) specifically for film. The choreographic work(s) should be

designed to demonstrate an understanding of the elements of choreography and the ability

to translate ideas into movement. The choreographer is not required to perform in his or her

own work(s). The choreography is expected to contribute one-third of the assessment in skills

development.

Part 2: Technique

Students participate as members of a group in one structured technique class, in

contemporary, jazz, classical, tap, or break-dance genre. The class should run for

approximately 1 hour, during which students demonstrate an understanding of the

appropriate skills relevant to the genre.

A videoed demonstration of a range of dance material is required. Technique is expected to

contribute one-third of the assessment in skills development.

Part 3: Folio

The purpose of the choreographic or technique folio is for the student to provide evidence of

support and backup material used throughout the:

process of choreographing their final work(s) (along with an explanation and analysis of the

choreographic process used by the creator)

or

development of the chosen technique and selected areas of research (along with an

explanation and evaluation of the processes of developing the technique).

The aim of the folio is to provide detailed evidence that the choreographic or technical

processes have been planned, researched, and approached with a goal in mind, and with

thorough review, reflection, and evaluation.

6

In the folio students provide evidence of their achievements and progress in all facets of their

choreographic work or development of a technique, at regular intervals throughout the

program of study. A section on review, reflection, and evaluation should be included as part

of the folio. Students’ reviews, reflections, and evaluations may be documented in written

form, which may include interviews or references to poetry or prose; visual form, which may

include photographic material; or multimedia form.

It is expected that the folio will be presented using a variety of media. The submitted folio

should be a maximum of 1500 words or the equivalent in visual or multimedia form. The folio is

expected to contribute one-third of the assessment in skills development.

Assessment Type 2: Response (20%)

Students undertake research into dance perspectives — the works, practice, and issues from a historical period and/or a contemporary period. They analyse and interpret these perspectives, and give informed opinions on the focus of their research.

Students can undertake:

either

two responses. One response should be based on research into a topic from Part 1: Historical

Perspectives, and the second response should be based on research into a topic from Part 2:

Contemporary Issues.

Each response should be a maximum of 1000 words if written or a maximum of 6 minutes each for an oral presentation, or the equivalent in multimodal form.

or

one in-depth response on one topic from either Part 1: Historical Perspectives, or Part 2:

Contemporary Issues, or one topic that spans both Part 1: Historical Perspectives, and Part 2:

Contemporary Issues.

One in-depth response should be a maximum of 2000 words if written or a maximum of 12

minutes for an oral presentation, or the equivalent in multimodal form.

For this assessment type, students provide evidence of their learning primarily in relation to

the following assessment design criteria:

knowledge and understanding

presentation and communication

analysis and evaluation.

7

EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Assessment Type 3: Performance (30%)

Students are assessed on one of the following: a dance performance; a choreographic work;

a presentation of one or more off-stage roles chosen from the list in the area of study.

Dance performers are assessed in a group production, with time on stage of approximately 15

minutes. All performers must be seen in a solo, duo, or trio capacity for at least 1 minute

consecutively. This may occur within group choreography.

Elite Teams become role models for the school therefore their behaviour must be

impeccable. All Elite members will undertake 4 hours of Elite Class every week which is

comprised of Dance Troupe, Singing, Acting, Exams and Ballet. They will also need to do

another Ballet class during the week to keep their technique to a high standard.

CSTD Exams

Star Academy is a member of the CSTD (Commonwealth Society of Teacher's of Dancing).

We teach the CSTD syllabus with exams and assessments available in Classical Ballet, Jazz

and Tap. Exams are not compulsory for any of the students other than Elite Teams.

The CSTD Syllabus is a progressive program which allows students to be able to develop

technical expertise in each genre as appropriate to their age and experience.

To be eligible to be entered into an exam, students need to undertake a exam class as well

as a regular class in that subject area. For example, if they would like to do a jazz exam - they

will need to do the jazz exam class and a regular jazz class. There is an entry fee for every

exam taken set by the CSTD.

It is the teachers discretion whether the student will be allowed to sit their exam. We feel it is

in the best interest of the student to only be allowed to sit the exam if we think they will pass.

The time and dates of exams are scheduled by the CSTD Board not by Star Academy,

therefore it is possible that the exams may be on a school day, and this may mean that

students need to take a day off school to sit the exam. Exams are usually held in August

however, we will not know the date until mid June - early July. If there are dates in

July/August where you are unavailable please let staff know as soon as possible so we can

request our exam not be on that day. There is also an entry fee set by the CSTD which varies

depending on the level and length of the exam.

For students wishing to undertake CSTD exams, successfully completing certain levels can

earn SACE credits. It is at the SACE Board and the CSTD's discretion as to how many credits

are awarded, so if you would like more information please contact Star Academy and we

will enquire about your eligibility.
