Formosa is what the Portuguese called Taiwan when they came here in the 16th century and saw the islands verdant beauty. Taiwan forms a vital line of communication in the Asia-Pacific region. Two-thirds of the total area is covered by forested mountains and the remaining area consists of hilly country, platforms and highlands, coastal plains and basins. The Central Mountain Range stretches along the entire country from north to south, thus forming a natural line of demarcation for rivers on the eastern and western sides of the island. On the west side lies the Yu Mountain (Yushan) Range with its main peak reaching 3,952 meters, the highest mountain peak in Northeast Asia.

Taiwan has a very rich marine ecology. In the Pacific Ocean on Taiwans east, groups of bottlenose dolphins, spinner dolphins, Rissos dolphins, and pan tropical spotted dolphins can be seen jumping out of the water. Azure seas and magnificent coral reefs can be found in Kending (Kenting) on the south end of Taiwan, and on Green Island and the islands of the Penghu Archipelago. It is there for you to discover and marvel at.

Besides for being richly endowed by nature with varying terrain types such as lagoons, shoals, plains, basins, hills, plateaus, mountains and so on; great biosphere reserve of flora and fauna; mild climate and abundant rainfall. There are also in fact tracts of muddy coastal wetlands bristling with mangrove forest in Taiwan that serves as the natural sanctuary and stopover breeding habitat for migratory birds.

  • Taiwan Snacks

Snacking is deeply woven into the fabric of daily life in Taiwan. The plethora of snack foods available on the island opens a window to local culture. In fact, one of the quickest

ways to experience the local flavor of Taiwan is to visit one of the many night markets in Taiwan, each with a tempting array of delicious delicacies. At each market, visitors can sample

a wide selection of snack foods made with locally sourced ingredients. Since Taiwan is an island surrounded by oceans, seafood is a major ingredient in night markets, from oyster omelets and stir-

fried cuttlefish to seafood congee, squid stew, and milkfish soup, all of it addictively fresh and tasty.

    . Oyster Omelet

    . Oyster Vermicelli

    Q

Sea-fresh oysters are an important ingredient in this popular snack, available at just about every night market in Taiwan. The oysters are coated in potato starch and tapioca. Eggs and leafy vegetables are added to the mixture, which is skillet fried over a high flame. A sweet and sour sauce further adds to the addictively delicious taste.

No night market worth the name is without this unassuming little treat. The quality of this dish is judged by the freshness of the oysters and chewiness of noodles. The dish is made with a type of red vermicelli that does not crumble easily. The noodles are served in a soup stock with fresh oysters and soy stewed large intestines and flavored with black vinegar, a special sauce, and a garnish of cilantro.

    FOOD

    . Pearl Milk TeaQ

Also known as Bubble milk tea, pearl milk tea originates from Taichung and is made from a mixture of black tea, milk, and sago pearls. The combination of fragrant tea and chewy sago has made this beverage popular not only in Taiwan but in other countries as well. At many Chinatowns across the world, you can find this refreshing beverage.

Next to these Chinese delicacies, the enormous variety of typical Taiwanese snacks is unique in the world and most perfectly illustrates the important place that the food culture takes into the lives of the Taiwanese people. Famous and unique Taiwanese snacks range from oyster omelets to fried rice noodles, tempura, Tainan Danzai noodles, Taiwanese spring rolls, rice tube pudding, and braised pork rice. Food is cheap and delicious, and by no means inferior, while each specialty gives you an insight in the people of the area it originates from.

Typical Taiwanese snacks are found everywhere, but Taiwans night markets in particular, each night market having its own traditions and characteristics, are the places where these snacks can be found in abundance. Trying out these snacks, tourists will be able to learn about different specialties, cultures and people from different areas, adding a whole new perspective to traveling.

Sipadan IslandThe 40,000 m Sipadan Island is a famous scenic diving spot and world-class diving resort of Sabah. Resembles a chimney protruded from 600 m deep sea bed, Sipadan Island is a deep-blue water island with the sea bed starting at a depth of 3 m and plunging straight down to 600 m vertical abyss only a step away. Dotted with lush tropical rain forests and white-roof cottages, an aerial view of the Island looks like a tranquil mushroom blooming from the Sulu Sea. However, only 30% of the wonders are found above the water level, as the remaining 70% of the splendors awaits your exploration in the water.

The underwater world of Sipadan is certainly fascinating, there are nearly as many species of deepwater corals as shallow-water species, anemones, sponges, as well as the huge colonies of fish species such as barracudas! In addition, you would able to see turtles if you are lucky enough! Agencies which offer day trip programme to Sipadan Island are mainly found in the Dragon Inn of Semporna. The most recommended ones are the North Borneo Dive and Uncle Chang, with lunch inclusive packages offers three diving day trips at the usual price of RM220-250, and snorkeling at around RM150.
