Dyers theory is that a star isn't a real person its just a image. Celebrities are constructed by insitituions for financial gain and target one specific audience/group of people.

Pop star Rihanna is known well around the world well and not just for her singing capabilities. The record label Def. Jam Roc Nation transformed her into a pop star after she released the album named good girl gone bad. By being in the news a lot for what her boyfriend did to her his helped with the promotion of her new album. She was put into popular magazines and attended parties and permiers. She is well known for her music but also her image.

Keeping the image of a pop star.

Richard Dyer theory suggest that real pop stars have a lasting significances and have to make some sort of a change. No matter if it’s a sociological or cultural impacts if not they will be forgotten about in a couples of years down the line.

Rihanna has a charity which has made a big impact, “The Believe Foundation” has goals set of helping 10,000 people in need for bone marrow transplants. With the help of Rihanna brand image she can promote it very easily. Applying this to Dyers theory this would mean that she is a ‘True Pop Star’.

Hegemony is the star theory that the audiences can relate to. The star that we admire in this case Rihanna is like a idol to us, She has a massive following in magazines and social networking. Audiences can see what she is doing 24/7.

She is seen as a role model but a not very good one a she is seen smoking, abusing alcohol and taking nude photos. As a role model to 13+ girls they will try and copy what she does.
