Dear CAL members,

We have just one Star-Lit! Series concert left this season: Simply Swingin’ with Sinatra and Friends featuring Steve Lippia on May 3. It will be a great end for the 2013-2014 season. We have two Promenade Series concerts remaining: Aperio, The Music of the Americas on Tuesday, April 1 and Danica Dawn Johnston, soprano, on May 13. Many of you will remember hearing Danica when she sang with The Priests this last fall. Our last Free Children’s Series event will be on Saturday, April 26 at 10am with the Houston Grand Opera’s Opera to Go! presenting “Rapunzel.” The Houston Symphony Sounds Like Fun! The concert will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 3. The concert is free, and no tickets are required. Bring your kids (or grandchildren) early to play musical instruments at the Instrument Petting Zoo. The zoo opens at 7pm. And finally, we have our wonderful summer camps…. Our Strings Camp will be June 23-27 and our Dance Camp will be July 14-18. The Dance Camp is open to all children ages 6 -10. We hope to see you at a concert soon!

was a treat for all the senses. On February 7th, Helene Burris, Jeanette Loverdi and Sharon Hemphill hosted this lovely event. A special thanks to Margie Crump for allowing us to use her beautiful home which was the perfect setting.

As guests arrived everyone enjoyed walking through simulated champagne bubbles which set the stage for this unique experience. A saxophone player greeted everyone with mellow sounds as a beautifully lit tree made of champagne bottles dazzled in the foyer. Special thanks to Mary Ann Landry for sharing the beautiful champagne tree. Tables covered with ethereal flower petal table cloths were adorned with exquisite sugar sculptures and held a magnificent array of tantalizing finger sandwiches, miniature desserts, and delectable candies. Mimosas, champagne and special teas completed this lovely event. Also thanks to Sandra Loyd for her assistance with decorating and Cathy Wagner for helping greet everyone.

Our Centrum Arts League President, Sharon Goldsberry gave a presentation and everyone raved about the lovely afternoon.

This is the sixth year, the Barbara Bush Branch Library, Cypress Creek FACE, the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts, and the

Cypress Creek Christian Community Center have been busy hosting 3rd Grade classes from the Klein Independent School District. These four organizations have worked together to create an interdisciplinary arts experience for community children, including the literary, performing, and visual arts. We work together to familiarize students with these community services and resources. Our commitment of Klein ISD and the organizations to develop arts education continues to increase. The Houston Grand Opera’s Houston to Go company in cooperation with FACE featured Strega Nona (Grandma Witch), a delightful Italian folktale to explain some of the basics of opera. The children enjoyed the story of Strega Nona and became acquainted with opera. CAL members assist the Klein teachers. Thanks to all who helped with Klein Art Days!!

The 2013 Scholarship Winners!! The members of the Centrum Arts League in conjunction with FACE were delighted to once again offer scholarships to outstand-ing young musicians who are graduates of northwest Harris County area high schools. Our 2013-2014 recipients are students at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music and Sam Houston State University’s School of Music.

Tommy Trinh is a 2011 graduate of Cypress Woods High School majoring in music education and vocal performance at the University of Houston. He is the recipient of the Barbara Schlattman 2013 Scholarship. Tommy is a member of the Honors College and a leader among his peers in the Moores School. It is said that his energy, initiative, and enthusiasm are some of his most outstanding characteristics.

Nicolas Lopez is a 2011 graduate of Tomball High School studying vocal performance at the Moores School. Nicolas is also a member of the Honors College. One of his professors has this to say: Nicolas is a curious and passionate musician who is eager to learn interesting repertoire – if anything, my challenge is getting him to slow down a bit!

Emily Eisterhold is a 2011 graduate of Spring High School majoring in music education at Sam Houston State University. Her philosophy is that music is something meant to be shared, not kept within, and she would love to help in spreading the joy of music to others. It was said of her that she exhibits all of the qualities one would hope for when choosing a student to serve as the face of the university and the school of music.

Ramsey Hampton is a 2011 graduate of Andy Dekaney High School in Spring ISD. He is majoring in music education at Sam Houston State. Through his university activities, teaching private lessons, and leadership in the music program at his alma mater, Dekaney High, he is developing his skills as a professional musician and music educator by doing, not merely by attending

classes. He is considered to be an outstanding student leader by both his peers and his professors. Linda Pennell
