In Our Parish
June 9, 2019– Pentecost
Today is Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of our Mother Church. It is the most incredible and most permanent presence and indwelling of the Holy Spirit that gave birth and gives life to the Church and guarantees that it will survive and continue its mandate and mission. We heard in the Gospel that the disciples gathered in a locked chamber, fearing the worst. Our Risen Lord came to put those fears to rest. Despite our fears and anxieties, the Holy Spirit descends on all of us, as happened with the disciples, and gives us peace, power and assurance. Pentecost Sunday is the perfect day to set aside our fears and anxieties. With Jesus, with the Holy Spirit, we have nothing to fear. There is no one knocking at the door of your chamber of fear and anxiety except Jesus, wishing you and blessing you with the Holy Spirit. Have faith, free yourself from life’s fears and anxieties. COME HOLY SPIRIT AND KINDLE IN US THE FIRE OF YOUR LOVE. Amen.

ADORATION AT STAR OF THE SEA ON THE 1ST THURSDAY OF EACH
MONTH FROM 8:30AM UNTIL 3:00PM The next Adoration is August 1st, 2019
Why Eucharistic Adoration? The Catechism quotes St. Pope John Paul II: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease.” (CCC1380)
Every vocation in the Church comes from and through Christ Jesus. It is He who calls. Spending time in Eucharistic Adoration with our Divine Lord is a good place to go to ask what He wants with our life. Why not spend some time each month in adoration, in union, in contemplation of the Lord present in the Eucharist?
Spending time with Jesus in adoration should not strike us as unusual. It is really a very natural human activity. When two people love each other, they want to spend time together to visit, to get to know each other better. You cannot love someone you do not know. Adoration of our Lord in the Eucharist is your chance to know Jesus better.
Christ is truly and substantially present in the Eucharist – Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Let our adoration never cease.
Please prayerfully consider joining the parish Eucharistic Adoration team – contact Dick and Sue Meeker at 757-228-7775 or [email protected]

We are making every effort to continue to follow our Diocese’s Safe Environment Program for Children and Vulnerable Adults. Here are a few changes that we have made to help in this goal. Recently we have re-configured our
Reconciliation Room in the Chapel to offer a space that complies with a safe environment for Reconciliation.
We have also moved the vesting area for the Altar Servers to the Choir Closet. They will change in this space under the guidance of a responsible adult.

Pentecost reminds us through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that our membership in God’s family is never meant to be self-serving or indulgent, but all about service, sacrifice, and love for one another. May all of us be filled with the Holy Spirit, live with Christ’s Peace, and always know God’s love.
“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…”
Highlights from Social Ministry: Peace & Justice: May peace be with you and with our global family! Continue to pray the Rosary! Our prayers and special intentions really make a difference and are powerful!
Social Outreach: The following items are always greatly appreciated as they are very helpful to the individuals and families that come to Social Outreach:
Family snacks and crackers Any Shampoo or Conditioner samples (that you may
come across while vacationing) Jelly/Jams Large cans of Green Beans 102 ounce size Deodorant Instant Coffee Decorated Lunch Bags: This is a great family volunteer
project to help share some cheer to our guests coming to our Social Outreach. The bags are decorated on one side with very thoughtful words of encouragement and also a small picture. If your family has decorated some bags, just drop off in the Food Cart when you come to weekend Mass. Also if you like, identify your donation with your family name as we would like share with our parish your contribution to this special project.
The following lunch bag examples were made by Mary Mooney!
Soup Kitchen: Our Soup Kitchen Ministry volunteers will serve dinner at Judeo Christian Outreach Center (JCOC) on scheduled dates during the year. We look forward to making a delicious meal for our parish community’s needy and homeless at JCOC, and enjoy an evening of service and fellowship! Our dates for JCOC for the rest of this year are: June 19, July 31, August 21, October 9, and December 18, 2019.

Sweet Blessings: Our Sweet Blessings ministry has been visiting our local police, firefighters, EMS, nursing homes, and hospital sites in Virginia Beach to share some sweet treats of cakes and doughnuts to staff members in gratitude for their service to our parishioners and the community! The service workers are very grateful for the special treats and are often surprised by our sweet gesture of thanking them for all that they do to help others. Our Sweet Blessing ministry and our local partner, Sugar Plum Bakery, coordinate to have such delicious treats to share and to make sure the good work of these emergency and rescue workers is acknowledged!
Migrant Ministry: Our contact for Migrant Ministry is Isabel Valentini at # (757)406-1453. Please consider joining Migrant Ministry, especially if you are fluent in Spanish (for visits to Hispanic camps) or French (for possible Haitian camps). Migrant Ministry visits the Eastern Shore during the summer to outreach to migrant workers and show our SOS hospitality that God’s love is for all of us. As we are preparing for our summer Migrant Ministry outreach activities, please check in the bulletin for our Migrant Ministry’s supply requests if you would like to help in donating supplies. Please note: We are very limited on storage, so we are unable to take any general clothing or household donations that are not posted on our weekly bulletin supply request list. Any supply requests noted in the bulletin highlight specific needs of this special population that our Migrant Ministry serves during the summer. The following supplies will be needed in our anticipated summer season of visits to the Eastern Shore:
Box Fans, Toilet Paper, Bed Sheets, Towels, Food Lion gift cards
