coordinates 22/87/4. ApproachingNeutral Zone, all systems normal andfunctioning.
INT. ENTERPRISE BRIDGE
As the ANGLE WIDENS, we see the crew at stations;(screens and visual displays are in use); COMMANDERSULU at the helm, COMMANDER UHURA at the Comm Con-sole, DR. BONES McCOY and SPOCK at his post. TheCaptain is new -- and unexpected. LT. SAAVIK is youngand beautiful. She is half Vulcan and half Romulan.
In appearance she is Vulcan with pointed ears, but herskin is fair and she has none of the expressionlessfacial immobility of a Vulcan.
SULULeaving Section Fourteen forSection Fifteen.
SAAVIKStand by. Project parabolic courseto avoid entering Neutral Zone.
SULUAye, Captain. Course changeprojected.
UHURA(suddenly)

ON SCREEN we see the approach of the Klingon vessels,they are dark and sinister.

The ALARM SOUNDS.
SULUShields activated.
SAAVIKInform the Klingons we are on arescue mission...
UHURAThey're jamming al the frequencies,Captain!
COMPUTER VOICEKlingons on attack course and closing!
Screen verifies this. Saavik makes an agonized choice.
SAAVIKWe're over our heads, Mr. Sulu,get us out of here!
SULUI'll try, Captain.
COMPUTER VOICEAlert! Klingon torpedoesactivated. Alert!
The image flops: more Klingons approach. They FIREphoton torpedoes.
SAAVIKEvasive action!
Sulu does his best, but Enterprise is hit; Sulu ishurled from his station, and Bones hurries to him.

Engineering: damage report
SCOTTY'S VOICE(INTERCOM)
Main energizer hit, Captain!
SAAVIKEngage auxiliary power. Prepareto return fire!
The bridge takes another hit -- a big one. In its wakethere is a second electrical EXPLOSION along the communi-cations panel. Uhura falls from her station. Bonesrushes to her side amid the smoke and alarms.
A CADETShields collapsing, Captain!
SAAVIKFire all phasers...!
SPOCKNo power to the weapons, Captain.
Another hit: reverberating flashes of spark and flameon the bridge. Spock dies. Bones comes to him, buteven as he coughs his way through the smoke, a finalhit and Bones falls. The room is smoke filled and ashambles. Saavik looks about in shock.
SCOTTY'S VOICE(FILTERED)
Captain, it's no use. We'redead in space.
Saavik digests this for a painful moment. Then, touch-ing a Comm button:
SAAVIKActivate escape pods. Send out theLog Buoy... All hands abandon ship.Repeat -- all hands abandon ship!

The side wall of the "bridge" slides apart, REVEALINGa lighted room beyond. Through the opening stridesKIRK. He stops, surveys the shambles, and shakes hishead.
SAAVIKAny suggestions, Admiral?
KIRKPrayer, Mr. Saavik. The Klingons
don't take prisoners.(to technicians)
Lights!(to Spock)
Captain.
SPOCKTrainees to the briefing room.
WOMAN (V.O.)(intercom)
Maintenance Crew, report to Bridgesimulator. Maintenance Crew, report
to Bridge simulator.
Sulu awakens with a grin. Uhura straightens herselfdemurely. The trainees head toward the distant room.Spock rises and leaves. Bones remains on the floor,head propped in his hand, whimsically.
KIRKPhysician, heal thyself.
BONESIs that all you gotta say? Well,what about my performance?
KIRKI'm not a drama critic.
Bones rolls his eyes and rises. Kirk sees Saavik whohas not moved.
KIRKWell, Mr. Saavik, are you going tostay with the sinking ship?

WE HEAR A SOFT BONG.
Startled, Kirk lowers the book and pushes a button.
The door slides open and Bones enters. he carries twopackages, one of them wrapped in brown paper.
KIRKWhy, bless me, Doctor. What beamsyou into this neck of the woods?
BONES'Beware Romulans bearing gifts.'Happy Birthday, Jim!
KIRK(low)

With a flourish, Bones pulls out a bottle of blueliquid.

A RUINED SERIES OF MAN-MADE STRUCTURES, half-buried insand. They look at each other in consternation. Chekov
is worried; something about all this is familiar.
They descend towards the structures, now seen to be thewreckage of some sort of space craft.
They pass but do not notice the FEDERATION LOGO, halfburied next to their feet.
TERRELLThose look like cargo carriers...
As Chekov looks at the porthole, a face suddenly looksback! It is the face of a CHILD! The apparition
scares the daylights out of Chekov -- and us. Hescreams.
TERRELL(continuing)
What is it?
He comes clumsily over --
CHEKOVIt was a face -- like a child.
He points. The porthole is empty.
TERRELLYou're crazy -- !
CHEKOVI saw it -- !

They wander as they talk, picking up objects that be-speak a fairly sophisticated ad hoc environment: alaboratory in one hold, a kitchen; a LARGE SAND TANKfilled with disgusting CETI EELS.
ABRUPTLY A SOUND -- They start: CHILD'S GURGLE.
CHEKOV(Terrified)
I told you! I told you I saw a --
TERRELLSsssh!
They start looking. They enter a new chamber --
20 20KHAN'S QUARTERS
on its side in the sand: the walls are not the floor,etc. All in crookedness - like its owner. On thefloor, smiling at them (i.e., the wall) is a BABY.
Tentatively they come over to it, looking around --
21 21ANGLE - CHEKOV'S POV
Lethal-looking odd swords on one wall, a bookshelf;CAMERA PANS by 20th Century volumes; MOBY DICK, KINGLEAR, THE HOLY BIBLE -- and a seat belt dangling withthe name on it -- BOTANY BAY.
Chekov mouths the words, softly at first, then aloud --
CHEKOVBotany Bay... Botany Bay!! -- Oh,no! We've got to get out of here --now! Damn! Hurry!
