01:02:37:19 CARTER: His name is Dr. Richard Flemming. He's a biologist, formerly a

professor of advanced genetics at Stanford.

01:02:44:04 JONAS: Sure. He's famous for developing hybrid strains of disease-resistant corn

and cotton.

01:02:52:29 JONAS: I read an article about him in The American Journal for Evolutionary

Science.

01:03:00:03 JONAS (CONT'D): The Base library has a subscription.

01:03:02:13 CARTER: Well, what the article didn't say is that two years ago, he accepted a

position with a company called Immunitech Research, which, it turns out,

is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Zetatron Industries.

01:03:15:00 TEAL'C: Adrian Conrad.

01:03:18:00 JONAS: Who?

01:03:19:15 CARTER: You don't know?

01:03:23:17 HAMMOND (O/S): Adrian Conrad was a man who had himself...

01:03:26:15 HAMMOND (CONT'D): implanted with a stolen symbiote in order to cure himself

of a deadly disease.


01:03:30:10 CARTER: That was 10 months ago. At the time, Immunitech was located in

Phoenix. One week after we took Adrian Conrad into custody, their

operations were scaled back, and they moved to a small town on the

coast of Oregon called...Steveston.

01:03:47:08 HAMMOND (CONT'D): this Dr. Flemming.

01:03:48:18 CARTER: He was reported missing this morning, sir. They found his car totaled,

but there was no body.

01:03:55:11 HAMMOND (CONT'D): further investigation. I'll have transportation arranged for

the three of you.

01:04:02:17 CARTER: The Tok'ra are still looking for a suitable host for his symbiote.

01:05:36:02 CARTER: I'm Major Samantha Carter with the Air Force. I'm looking for Sheriff

Knox.


01:05:39:04 SHERIFF KNOX (O/S): I'm Sheriff Knox.

01:05:42:01 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D): Welcome to Steveston, Major.

01:05:43:15 CARTER: Thank you, sir.

01:05:44:04 SHERIFF KNOX: Hey, those doughnuts? Do you want anything, Major?

01:05:45:29 CARTER: Oh, no, thank you.

01:05:48:27 DEPUTY: Sure thing.

01:05:52:07 SHERIFF KNOX: Have a seat, Major.

01:05:56:26 SHERIFF KNOX: So, uh, you're looking for information about Dr. Richard

Flemming?

01:06:01:16 CARTER: That's right. I understand he's missing.

01:06:04:14 SHERIFF KNOX: We found his car in a ditch outside of town. It was pretty badly

smashed up, but there was no sign of him.

01:06:10:23 CARTER: Can I see the car?

01:06:22:12 CARTER: You think he walked away from this?


01:06:25:02 SHERIFF KNOX: Look, Major, no offense, but this is my problem. The Air Force

has no jurisdiction here.

01:06:35:11 CARTER: I know I can't force you to tell me anything, but Dr. Flemming may have

had information pertaining to a matter of national security.

01:06:45:18 CARTER (CONT'D): I'm asking for your help.

01:06:52:00 SHERIFF KNOX: We haven't had a murder in this county in eight years.

01:06:55:18 CARTER: So you don't think it was an accident?

01:06:57:29 SHERIFF KNOX: Well, at the very least, someone didn't want us to find the body.

01:07:04:05 CARTER: Did you know him?

01:07:05:28 SHERIFF KNOX: The people at Immunitech didn't mix too much with the locals,

but according to his co-workers, he was acting a little strange lately.

01:07:16:15 CARTER: Strange how?

01:07:17:28 SHERIFF KNOX: Nervous, agitated.

01:07:22:02 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D O/S): We found these in his glove compartment.

01:07:26:10 CARTER: Amphetamines.


01:07:27:23 SHERIFF KNOX: He had no history of drug use.

01:07:30:03 CARTER: I'd like to see his lab, if I may.

01:07:32:25 SHERIFF KNOX: There was a fire last night at Immunitech. The place was gutted.

01:07:45:15 CARTER: Flemming's lab was destroyed in a fire.

01:07:48:00 JONAS: So what now?

01:07:49:23 CARTER: Check out his house.

01:09:04:26 TEAL'C: Nothing of interest.

01:09:06:24 CARTER: Me neither. There's nothing on the hard drive, there's no disks, no

notes, no papers. There's not even a credit card bill. This place has been

cleaned.

01:09:20:16 TEAL'C: Major Carter...

01:09:39:24 COURIER: Can you sign for this?

01:09:41:15 CARTER: Uh, sure.


01:09:45:15 COURIER: Thanks.

01:09:46:27 CARTER: Thank you.

01:09:55:27 CARTER: Well, this is odd.

01:09:57:13 JONAS: What is it?

01:09:59:00 CARTER: This package to Dr. Richard Flemming was sent from Dr. Richard

Flemming.

01:10:03:22 JONAS: Why would he send something to himself?

01:10:05:25 CARTER: Maybe he knew they were going to search the house. It's a good way to

hide something for a couple of days.

01:10:49:16 CARTER: The police found amphetamines. We found a syringe. I think we need

to at least admit there's a possibility that Dr. Flemming was suffering

from some kind of drug-induced paranoia.

00:01:11:05 TEAL'C: Perhaps his paranoia was well founded--he is missing, his place of work

was destroyed, and all evidence was removed from his home.

01:11:07:19 CARTER: Well, the scientists working for Adrian Conrad were studying this

symbiote in order to create some kind of superdrug. Maybe this is what

they came up with.


01:11:16:10 JONAS: Well, if that's true, then a lot of people would kill to get their hands on it.

01:11:22:07 CARTER (O/S): Well, we won't know anything for sure until we send a sample of

this back to the base for analysis.

01:11:27:09 CARTER (CONT'D): I think tomorrow we should talk to other people who worked

at Immunitech. We need to figure out what was going on at that lab.

01:12:17:15 TOWNSPERSON (O/S): As some of you may already know, we have three

uninvited guests in town. They are asking questions. The chances are

they won't find anything...

01:12:30:23 TOWNSPERSON (CONT'D): but if they do, then we will have to deal with them.

01:13:31:00 JONAS: Mm.

01:13:32:15 CARTER: Nice lunch.

01:13:35:08 JONAS: I'm really starting to enjoy this traditional American food.

01:13:40:10 CARTER: We have another tradition. It's called hardened arteries.

01:13:46:16 TEAL'C: Were you able to learn anything?

01:13:47:29 CARTER: No one who worked at Immunitech wants to talk.

01:13:50:28 TEAL'C: Our attempts to gather information from the local townsfolk proved

equally fruitless.

01:13:54:19 JONAS: I wouldn't say that.

01:14:01:07 JONAS: Don't tell me you haven't noticed how strangely people have been acting

around here.

01:14:05:05 CARTER: What are you talking about?

01:14:07:23 JONAS: Well, for instance, that man there, right behind Teal'c...


01:14:11:11 JONAS (CONT'D O/S): He doesn't realize it, but he just put eight cubes of sugar

into his coffee...

01:14:16:08 JONAS (CONT'D): and that lady over at the counter, she's been reading the same

article for a half an hour. Since we sat down, that waitress has dropped

her tray twice...

01:14:25:24 JONAS (CONT'D): the cook has gotten three orders wrong, including my

hamburger, which I ordered medium rare, but is in fact well done.

01:14:31:08 JONAS (CONT'D O/S): I've been noticing similar behavior all morning.

01:14:34:16 JONAS (CONT'D): It's like the entire town's half asleep.

01:14:37:10 DEPUTY: Major Carter?

01:14:39:16 DEPUTY (CONT'D O/S): Sorry to bother you. Sheriff Knox would like to see you.

01:14:49:18 SHERIFF KNOX: I understand you and your colleagues have been asking a lot of

questions around town.

01:14:54:06 CARTER: Yeah. Is that a problem?

01:14:58:00 SHERIFF KNOX: We found gasoline residue

01:15:00:10 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D O/S): at the lab, a lot of it.


01:15:02:23 CARTER: So the fire was deliberate.

01:15:03:29 SHERIFF KNOX: Which means the stakes have gotten a lot higher. Major, if you

know something...

01:15:08:10 CARTER (INTERRUPTING): Sheriff, I already told you my investigation pertains

01:15:11:25 CARTER (CONT'D O/S): a matter of--

01:15:13:20 SHERIFF KNOX (INTERRUPTING): National security. I know.

01:15:16:14 CARTER (O/S): The truth is, I didn't get...

01:15:17:29 CARTER (CONT'D): any useful information this morning.

01:15:20:03 SHERIFF KNOX: I'm not surprised.

01:15:21:12 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D): Everyone who worked at the lab had a confidentiality

agreement. Nobody wants to get sued.

01:15:26:25 CARTER: Well, now that we know it was arson, maybe the company will be willing

to cooperate.

01:15:29:27 SHERIFF KNOX: I wouldn't be too sure about that.

01:15:33:05 CARTER: Well, they're going to want to know who burned their lab down.


01:15:37:08 SHERIFF KNOX: There's something you don't know.

01:15:42:18 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D): Two months ago, another Immunitech researcher

named Peter Stofer disappeared. The case was never solved.

01:15:49:21 CARTER: Why didn't you tell me this?

01:15:51:03 SHERIFF KNOX: The town's been through some rough times, Major. The

shipyard shut down two years ago, put everybody out of work.

01:15:57:16 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D O/S): When Immunitech came along...

01:15:59:12 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D): they brought a lot of money to the area.

01:16:01:12 CARTER: So nobody wants to hear anything bad about them.

01:16:03:14 SHERIFF KNOX: There was no solid evidence of foul play in the Stofer case. He

just didn't show up for work one day, and hasn't been seen since...

01:16:11:03 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D O/S): but I did get the feeling...

01:16:13:03 SHERIFF KNOX (CONT'D): the company had something to hide.

01:16:15:13 CARTER: What do you mean?

01:16:22:00 SHERIFF KNOX: We subpoenaed documents from them.


01:16:27:14 SHERIFF KNOX: This is what we got.

01:16:41:03 CARTER: Did Stofer work with Dr. Flemming?

01:16:43:06 SHERIFF KNOX: They were partners.

01:16:48:05 CARTER: I'm going to need to borrow these.

01:16:53:11 CARTER (V/O): Well, this is interesting. It's a shipping invoice.

01:16:56:26 CARTER (CONT'D): Flemming and Stofer ordered all the latest material on stem

cell research.

01:17:01:28 JONAS: Really? Hmm...and there's no record of Immunitech doing research in

that area. It's...

01:17:08:29 CARTER: I know.

01:17:09:07 TEAL'C: Why would they keep that a secret?

01:17:12:18 CARTER: Well, stem cells can be used to create skin grafts or replacement

organs, but theoretically, they can also be used to create human

clones...

01:17:24:09 CARTER (CONT'D): cloning research, and Flemming decided to blow the whistle-

01:18:48:27 JONAS: Well, it's natural for small-town people to be suspicious of strangers,

right? We just have to give it more of an effort.

01:18:59:11 JONAS (CALLING OUT): Hey, guys.

01:19:16:04 TEAL'C: You have much to learn about humans.

01:19:18:07 JONAS: That's kind of my point. How are we supposed to fit in when we spend all

our time on base?

01:21:55:06 CARTER (CONT'D): analysis on the sample I sent her. She thinks the liquid in the

syringe might be some sort of sulfa-based antibiotic.

01:22:02:14 JONAS: So, some kind of miracle drug?

01:22:05:16 CARTER: We won't know anything for sure until we get more test results back.

01:22:15:17 JONAS: That's the guy from the bar.

01:22:20:05 JONAS: Hi.

01:22:21:15 GUY #1: Hello.

01:22:22:22 JONAS: Sorry about our...misunderstanding last night.

01:22:28:01 GUY #1: Excuse me?

01:22:29:16 JONAS: At the bar, our little confrontation. My friend and I were in your seats.

01:22:36:28 GUY #1: I'm afraid you've got me mistaken for someone else.

01:22:49:28 JONAS (O/S): That's a little strange.

01:22:56:17 JONAS: I thought of that, but he wasn't showing any of the signs of a hangover.

01:23:05:13 TEAL'C: We are being watched. The silver car...

01:23:12:00 JONAS: That's the guy from the sheriff's office. He was outside when we first got

in town. He was in the restaurant yesterday.

01:23:47:12 DARK-HAIRED MAN: Okay, take it easy.

01:23:49:25 CARTER: Why are you following us?

01:23:52:21 DARK-HAIRED MAN: I don't know what you're talking about.

01:23:54:22 CARTER: Teal'c...


01:23:55:23 DARK-HAIRED MAN: All right, all right, all right. I wasn't sure if you could be

01:24:03:15 DARK-HAIRED MAN: I was a security guard at Immunitech.

01:24:09:00 DARK-HAIRED MAN (CONT'D): I think Dr. Flemming was murdered.

01:24:13:21 DARK-HAIRED MAN (O/S): Well, about a week ago, he came to me. He wanted

to know...

01:24:16:03 DARK-HAIRED MAN (CONT'D): if I could get him a gun, said his life was in

danger, and that I was the only one who could help him.

01:24:21:25 DARK-HAIRED MAN: Well, that's the weird part. He said that the people who

were after him only come out during the night while everyone's asleep.

01:24:28:16 DARK-HAIRED MAN (CONT'D): Since I work the graveyard shift and sleep during

the day, I guess he figured I wasn't one of them.

01:24:34:19 DARK-HAIRED MAN (CONT'D O/S): First, I thought he was crazy...


01:24:36:13 DARK-HAIRED MAN (CONT'D): and then he went missing. That's when I decided

that working for Immunitech was a little too dangerous.

I figured I owed the guy to tell someone. If it hadn't been for him, I would

have died in that fire.

constructed.

01:29:20:24 CARTER: General Hammond's going to hold off calling in the troops until we can

figure out who built this thing and why.

01:29:26:01 JONAS: Well, all the disks we got from the shipyards are encoded. I can't read

any of them.

01:29:31:19 JONAS: Yeah.

01:29:37:19 TEAL'C: Adrian Conrad illegally acquired a symbiote from Colonel Maybourne. It

is possible he also acquired alien technology.

the cover of darkness.

01:34:49:15 TEAL'C: The symbiotes are immature. They are too weak to assert permanent

control.

the next morning, they're a little tired, but none the wiser.

01:35:06:05 DEPUTY: Oh, don't worry about them. We have ways of dealing with that

situation.

01:37:10:07 DEPUTY: Relax. We have a containment team on standby for emergencies. We

can have this whole town locked down and quarantined in 45 minutes.

01:37:16:03 TEAL'C: Then do so.

01:37:19:17 JONAS: Your operation is blown, Agent Cross. The symbiotes know we're on to

them.

01:37:25:00 DEPUTY: This is Cross. We have a code six.

01:41:44:04 SERGEANT: Perimeter is in place. We're ready to begin rounding up the citizens.

01:41:47:17 DEPUTY: Excellent. Agent Singer and I are going to need transport immediately

to headquarters.

01:41:51:15 SERGEANT: I'll call in the chopper.

01:42:06:10 SERGEANT (YELLING): Get out of the car! Keep your hands where we can see

them.

01:42:15:19 CARTER: I'm Major Carter, United States Air Force. I have important information

for Agent Cross.

01:42:22:24 DEPUTY: Let her through.

01:42:45:00 DEPUTY: What are you doing here?


01:42:46:24 DEPUTY (CONT'D O/S): You were supposed to be detained with the others.

01:42:49:10 CARTER: Major Carter is far more valuable to you if she hasn't been exposed.

01:42:52:16 DEPUTY: That wasn't part of the plan.

01:42:54:20 BARTENDER: No, she's right. While we're taking over the N.I.D., she can infiltrate

Stargate Command.

01:43:00:17 DEPUTY: It's too risky.

01:43:02:08 BARTENDER: You worry too much.

01:43:08:02 BARTENDER (CONT'D): The humans have no idea what's going on here.

01:43:09:25 CARTER: Oh, I wouldn't exactly say that.

01:43:20:10 CARTER: You guys aren't nearly as smart as you think you are.

01:43:27:23 CARTER: I translated enough of the Goa'uld writing to know that Immunitech had

engineered the symbiotes with a built-in kill switch, a susceptibility to a

particular antibiotic.

01:43:37:05 JONAS: The syringe...so we had it all along.


01:43:39:19 CARTER: When I saw the Goa'uld coming, I figured I had nothing to lose, so I

injected myself, and it acted like a vaccine. It took only a few minutes to

kill the symbiote, and then I just played along.

01:43:49:23 HAMMOND (O/S): We had similar results with the townspeople.

01:43:52:17 HAMMOND (CONT'D): They all responded positively to the treatment.

01:43:54:24 CARTER: Each dead symbiote will slowly break down and be absorbed into the

host body.

01:43:58:20 TEAL'C: Do the townspeople have any recollection of these events?

01:44:01:17 HAMMOND: As far as they know, they were all inoculated against an outbreak of

meningitis.

01:44:07:11 JONAS: So what about the ship?

01:44:09:10 CARTER: It's been transferred to Area 51. Even though it's not complete, it may

still prove valuable.

01:44:14:03 HAMMOND (O/S): All right.

01:44:15:17 HAMMOND (CONT'D): Dismissed.

01:44:21:00 JONAS: So when we were in the sheriff's office...


01:44:24:16 JONAS (CONT'D): you were in complete control.

01:44:26:20 CARTER: That's right.

01:44:29:26 JONAS: And you felt it absolutely necessary to really slap me.

01:44:34:13 CARTER: I had to make it look good.

01:44:40:15 CARTER: Let's get some lunch.
