This is a very busy month for the guild. At our next meeting Kelly Ashton will be
speaking about ‘diamonds’ and the guild’s quilt challenge is due. I can’t wait to see
what everyone has come up with. Make sure to turn in your entry forms for your quilts
as soon as possible or at our meeting for our quilt show at the end of the month.
In addition to that, it is time once again to focus on officers for next year. It is your
participation that makes this such a wonderful guild. Margaret Welch is coordinating
that effort. Please see her article that follows and consider volunteering in some
capacity next year. Rosie

NEXT BOARD MEETING: OCTOBER 17TH
AT ANTIOCH LIBRARY, 6:30 PM.
Starlight Quilt Guild Members Needed for 2018
It is getting close to the end of the year of 2017 and the guild needs to have a governing
board for 2018. Please consider volunteering for a position on our board. The guild is
what it is, due to the work of past SQG Boards and the generosity of members who
volunteer to participate.
We do want to continue providing wonderful programs and a smooth running guild to
serve our members. Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested in
any of the listed positions. The duties of the positions are listed in the SQG Bylaws which
you can find under Membership Information on the SQG website.
The following positions need to be filled for 2018:
This is a great way to get to know other people in the guild, and to have our guild
continue to grow and be a dynamic organization.

BLACK & WHITE & ONE BRIGHT CHALLENGE QUILTS ---- NO FREE TABLE
Don't forget to bring your quilt beauties to the September meeting. We'll display them on the tables
normally used for free items, so save your freebies until October.
Karen Edwards and I will number the quilts, provide voting ballots, tally them, and announce the 3 winners
during the meeting. ALSO, remember to bring your quilt forms to turn in with your quilts for the
upcoming quilt show.

“Diamonds Are a Quilter’s Best Friend”
Kelly Ashton will be our guest September 26th to present, “Diamonds are a Quilter’s Best Friend”. From Kelly’s website, she describes herself as a …“pragmatic quilt maker. Kelly approaches quilt design and construction with knowledge of and an appreciation for the theoretical and a penchant for the practical.
Her mid-life realization that she truly may not live long enough to use all of her fabric stash has propelled her into “turbo quilt making mode”! Kelly’s quilt designs range from “quick and easy” to “challenging”, thereby providing offerings to quilt makers with a wide range of skills and experience. Many of her designs are “pre-cut friendly”. Kelly loves to teach, and she readily shares with her students the discoveries that she makes along her quilt-making journey while encouraging her students to make discoveries of their own.”
We hope you can join us! Jean Turvey, Program Chair

BUCKET BRIGADE - Deb McCurnin & Beverly Renner Woo Hoo! We broke the record last month! We raised more in the bucket sales than ever before in one meeting.....unbelievable. Not to mention, every bit was donated by our wonderful guild members and their friends. A special thank you to Mary Honas who was able to obtain the "Farmers Wife" bucket that everyone was oohing and ahing over. This month we will have something for everyone. You like kits? We have a kit? You like fat quarters? We have fat quarters. You like gadgets? We have gadgets. We have everything, mostly the most generous and fun guild members anywhere. So come back and visit the Bucket Babes before the meeting (extra tickets for buying early) or during the break. As always, $5.00 will get you six tickets and $1.00 will give you one great chance. Thank you for your generosity and fun spirit. The Bucket Babes love seeing everyone and hearing about their projects. So, even if you don't need anything from the buckets come back and see us. We are in the corner, where we spent most of our school day years.
Happy Quilting!
Library Corner – Connie Passaro & Cheryl Tomson
Did you enjoy last month’s speaker, Nancy Mahoney? We purchased two of her books to add to the library, LEARN TO PAPER PIECE and KALEIDOSCOPE PAPER PIECING. Our speaker this month is Kelly Ashton. She will be teaching us all about using diamonds in our quilts. We have her book, HEXAGONS, DIAMONDS, TRIANGLES AND MORE. If you are a fan of jelly rolls we have also added JELLY ROLL JAMBALAYA QUILTS by Jean Ann Wright. Finally, we’ve added four donated books: Clever Banners, Panels & Postcards by Mary Mayne, Quick Cozy Flannel Quilts by Rhonda Richards, Pioneer Sampler and Flying Geese both by Eleanor Burns. We hope you’ve all found the library in our new location. As you face the stage, we’re to the left and down the short hall that’s there. Stop in before the meeting or during break to see what we have available.

Project Linus – Lea Robrahn
Since 1997, Starlight Quilters have donated blankets to Project Linus for local hospitals and other
organizations that help children in traumatic situations. This year, we’ve donated 353 blankets. Let’s dig deep
and make more.
WE NEED PROJECT LINUS BLANKETS!
The goal has always been for every member to donate at least 3 completed blankets every year. There are kits
that contain instructions and cut pieces to make tops at every meeting.
Some things to remember for Project Linus blankets:
• When using fleece as a back, skip the batting
• The smallest useable size is 36" x 36"
• The best size is between 40” by 50” and 40” by 60”
• Quilt the top by either tying or machine quilting, at least 6” to 8” apart
• When pillowcasing, remember to sew around the edge of the quilt
Exploring the World with Ethan mystery challenge.
Remember to designate your fees go to the Kansas City
Chapter of Project Linus. Sign up soon! The first clue
was just revealed September 16, 2017.

I sort of messed up this round. I didn't count how many fat quarters came
in. All I can say is I had both arms full and the doggy dish was totally full
of names. Janice McKee was the lucky winner of the autumn blocks.
For September, the theme will be DOTS! Let's see how many dots we can
bring. Some lucky winner will take home the makings of a fun project.
See you in September, Janette Sheldon

I’d Rather Be Stitchin’ – Donna di Natale
A series of quick and easy recipes to get you out of the kitchen and back to stitchin’. .

Pulled Pork Here is an inexpensive, easy and tasty recipe to feed a crowd.
1 – 3-4 lb. boneless pork butt or arm roast (My go-to is the arm roast sold by Costco. They come 2 to a package and usually sell for
around $1.99 lb.) 1 tsp. 1 tsp. olive oil
1 package McCormick’s Memphis Pit Barbeque Rub seasoning mix ¼ cup water
Rinse the roast and pat dry with paper towels. Rub the oil all over the roast. Pour half of the seasoning mix on a cutting mat or sheet of waxed paper. Roll the roast around until it is covered with the rub. Sprinkle more seasoning mix over the roast as needed. Using your hands, rub the seasoning into the meat – pretend you are massaging a muscle. Pour the water into the crockpot and the place the roast in a crockpot. Cook on low for 6-8 hours. Place the cooked roast in a large bowl. Let it cool for a few minutes. Using 2 forks, pull (shred) the meat apart. Salt and pepper to taste. Add a bit of BBQ sauce if desired. The cooked pork keeps well in the freezer for 4-6 weeks. I sometimes use my large crockpot to cook 2 roasts at a time – one for now and one for later.

GROUP GUILD PROJECT
I took 47 more placemats over to Meals on Wheels, making a grand total of 181
this year! They are so very appreciative of these placemats. The director said
that a 91 year old man called and said “You just made my day”. She said a lot of
clients call her to ask about the placemats. I’m lucky that I get to see all of the
placemats. I am so impressed with the quality of workmanship, and the time
and effort you have contributed. You can continue to bring them to the fall guild
meetings. Linda Clatterbuck
Starlight Whimsy
Are you ready? The time is near! The Starlight Quilt Show is almost here!
Is everything ready, or still more to do? Stitching and binding for me; how about
you?
Then, of course, there’s the challenge quilt;
Still not even started! Oh, my, the guilt!
An extra month to get it done, But, once again, I’m under the gun.
Maybe I’ll still get it done for the show,
But, chances are, this year is a “no."
The show is always a beautiful sight - Gorgeous colors and, of course, black and
white.
So, clear your calendars and be ready to go To Starlight’s “Sew Full of Whimsy” Quilt
Show.
