Sonata Pian’ e Forte by Giovanni GabrieliYour Starlight Symphony Orchestra begins the 2017-2018 season with an antiphonal and polychoral brass fanfare that was written in 1597. The brass fanfare is performed by two ensembles playing in opposition of each other in a work by Italian, Baroque composer, Giovanni Gabrieli. Sonata Pian’ e forte essentially means an instrumental piece using soft and loud dynamics. It is performed tonight as originally intended by Gabrieli with instruments divided into two groups and played on different sides of the hall.

Improvisation No.1 “Aleatory” by the Starlight Symphony OrchestraIf you Google “Aleatoric” you will likely come across a Wikipedia article defining the word as “…from the Latin word alea, meaning ‘dice.’ Aleatoric music is music in which some element of the composition is left to chance, and/or some primary element of a composed work’s realization is left to the determination of its performer(s).” In our concert of “Compare,” I felt it most appropriate to put a work like this next to the high traditions of Baroque and specifically of Gabrieli. Gabrieli is about harmonic order, balance and symmetry. This work is about chance. I have assigned sections of the orchestra in a specific order and asked them to prepare several possible pieces of music, tonal or not. They will determine what they will play on stage moments before that piece is performed. I do not know what they have prepared and they will not know what to play until they have made their determination, whether it is based on a roll of the dice, a blind pick of a card or a random choice of a number. The sections and order of ensembles is predetermined as this: 1. cellos and violas, 2. violins and basses, 3. woodwinds, 4. brass and harp, 5. percussion and violas, 6. low brass and violins, 7. woodwinds and cellos with basses, 8. woodwinds and brass, 9. everyone. Enjoy the original composition because it will never be heard again…ever.

Improvisation No.2 “Aleatory with a Smile” by Special GuestsAs with “Improvisation No.1,” this work is about the lack of harmonic order, balance and symmetry. This work is also about a literal roll of the dice or in our case, a die. Details on this piece will come from the stage.

Intermezzo in B Minor by Modest MussorgskyIntermezzo is one of these works that you feel you should have already heard, but before tonight probably have not. It begins with a powerful opening in ¾ time at a fairly quick tempo conducted in “1.” It was originally written for piano in 1867 and orchestrated by Rimsky-Korsakov. It moves in a fast pace until the trio where it slows to a breath catching tempo. The recapitulation brings the main thematic material back to the front before the unassuming and delicate ending.

Symphony No.60 “Il Distratto” by Joseph Haydn“The Distracted” is a delightful symphony in six short movements that Haydn originally wrote for a comedic play and later adopted into a symphony. The work lends itself to the feeling of an overture, four middle movements and a finale as one might find in a play of that time. Haydn had a great sense of humor and it is prevalent here. Compare this with the typical symphony genre and you will be surprised. Beyond the typical 3 to 4 movement Classical symphony tradition, Haydn writes in a literal music fade out and then later instructs the violins to change the tuning of their “G” string down to “F” before the last movement. During the last movement, the violins in grand gesture, retune the “F” back to “G” thus creating a sliding and tuning effect with the whole violin section.

Capriccio Espagnol, Op.34 by Nicolai Rimsky-KorsakovThis is a very, well-known orchestral suite based on Spanish folk melodies. The composer was publicly celebrated for his creative orchestration, but he wanted a deeper recognition. He wrote this in his biography:

“The opinion formed by both critics and the public, that the Capriccio is a magnificently orchestrated piece — is wrong. The Capriccio is a brilliant composition for the orchestra. The change of timbres, the felicitous choice of melodic designs and figuration patterns, exactly suiting each kind of instrument, brief virtuoso cadenzas for instruments solo, the rhythm of the percussion instruments, etc., constitute here the very essence of the composition and not its garb or orchestration. The Spanish themes, of dance character, furnished me with rich material for putting in use multiform orchestral effects. All in all, the Capriccio is undoubtedly a purely external piece, but vividly brilliant for all that.”

Rimsky-Korsakov had written his book on orchestration and was clearly looking for credibility as a composer not just as an orchestrator. Each movement continues almost straight into the next creating one continuous melodic and seamless flow.

When you compare the works on this program you will find a variety of compositional techniques. This is just a mere sampling that range from a Baroque-era, polychoral brass fanfare to a creative, lushness of the Capriccio. Each is unique and dramatic in its own way.
