Walk to School! Stanley Mills is working very hard to encourage students to walk to school to encourage fitness and to reduce congestion in our Kiss and Ride area! This fall, Mr. Stockden and dedicated grade 5 volunteers ran a Tuesday and Thursday Walk to School Tracking Pro-gram to boost the numbers of student walking to school. Congratulations to the many students who received prizes for walking to school during this program! This walk to school tracking will resume in February....but keep up the walking in January, too! Additionally, our staff has helped to get students walking by working with their students on “Walk to School Wednesday”. For the fall, teachers totalled the numbers of their stu-dents who walked to school on Wednesday. Mrs. Zolis’ class in grade 3 had the most walkers this fall! They have been awarded the “Green Shoe Award” for their fine efforts and the trophy is proudly displayed in their classroom! Together, we will continue working to increase the numbers of students walking to school. Even walking once a week can make a big difference to our school community. Please consider what you can do to help Stanley Mills’ to achieve its goal!

Please do not Idle in Stanley Mills’ Kiss and Ride!

Idling of vehicles seems harmless. In reality however, excessive idling wastes fuel and money, and generates needless greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

In Brampton, the average car idles for eight minutes per day. Over a year that costs $114 in gas (at current prices) and releases 202 kg of C02 into the atmosphere.

Unnecessary idling contributes to poor air quality, affects public health and results in faster wear and tear of vehicles. According to Natural Resources Canada, 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than it takes to restart an engine.

Help make a difference for your car and your community: if you are stopped for more than three minutes, except while in traffic, turn off your engine.

Help your family stay warm this winter

Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypo-thermia when working or playing outdoors:

Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at

school.

Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body.

Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra

pair to replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc.

Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and

pace yourself when doing vigorous activities.

Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia.

If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating

caused from an extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia.

If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.

December Stanley Mills Food Drive A Great Success !!!

Thank you Stanley Mills students, staff and parents for all your generosity with our food drive. With your support our community provided many needy families with some hope and care for the holiday season.

Traffic safety in our community

Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and from school. Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school. Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on

any surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school. Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them. When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to keep students safe. Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs. Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let your child out of your car. During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb. Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, stu dents, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect. Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc. Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street. Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They

should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.

Are you thinking of registering your child for French Immersion (FI)? For the 2014-15 school year, parents must register children for entry into grade 1 FI by 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Polar Vortex Written by: Vishal from Mr. Stockden’s Grade 5 Class

Good morning citizens of 5C and Mr.Stockden. I hope you are all enjoying your day. The main purpose of why I am standing here today is to talk to you about the Polar Vortex. I hope you are all bundled up and ready for winter because this winter is unlike any other winter because this winter we are involved with a polar vortex. A polar vortex is a consecutive large cyclone located near one or both of the planet’s geographical poles. You may be wondering what in the world are geographical poles. Well, geographical poles are the two poles, the north pole and the south pole. It is sometimes known as the ‘’Arctic Cyclone, sub-polar cyclone and circumpolar.’’ This cold and low pressure cyclone is very very cold in the winter and turns much warmer in the summer. They usually span 1,000 to 2,000 kilometers long. The main purpose the weather is so cold is because of the polar vortex. If you think that you faced the complete wrath of the polar vortex then I am afraid that you are sadly mis-taken. The vortex has only struck the United States of America. We are only feeling the side effects of the vortex. The citizens of the United States of America on the other hand are suffering from deadly harsh weather and are having a hard time managing their lives. The temperatures are as low as -50 degrees Cel-sius. Here is a fact. Did you know that the Antarctic vortex is far more persistent or in other words, consecutive than the Arctic vortex. It is really true. Well, let’s get back to the point. In conclusion to this, a polar vortex is ‘’bone chilling’’ in the winter but cools down in the winter. We might have been lucky and got ‘’out of hook’’ this time but who knows, next time we might not be as lucky. I learned a valuable lesson during this tragic experience indeed, and that is to always be prepared. You never know what destiny awaits you. Thank you

Polar Vortex Written by: Praveen from Mr. Stockden’s Grade 5 Class

Good morning Stanley Mills. I hope you are bundled up for this cold weather. Do you think that this is just like last year’s winter? Well if you do, then you are extremely wrong . This harsh weather is actually a hurricane named in some places as a Polar Vortex! A polar cyclone is a consecutive large-scale cyclone located near either of the planet’s poles, the north pole and the south pole. It strengthens during the winter time and weakens while summer is in motion. They normally span 1,00°-2,00° kilometers (620-1,240 miles) where the air is circulating in a counter-clockwise fashion, while other cyclones, their rotation is produced from the Coriolus effect. The Coriolus effect is a deflection of moving objects when they are viewed in a rotating reference frame. When the cyclone is weak, the general flow pattern across mid-latitudes buckles and significant cold outbreaks oc-cur. Canada is experiencing a Polar Vortex but we are only on the borders of it. The eye of the deadly cy-clone is located in the United States. It has reached as low as -50 degrees Celsius! Here it as only reached-35 degrees Celsius so compare that to fifty-below zero, LITERALLY!
