Start Times: Public Feedback
• September 21 – October 17• 3,878 people participated.
• 7,958 thoughts were contributed.
Start Times: Public Feedback
• Widespread support for later high school start times was expressed by all groups:– Parents, students, staff and community members.
• This support far surpassed any other theme expressed, including a desire to not change start times.
• The greatest concerns and questions were related to the impact on students and families, with specific concerns about before- and after-school activities.
Start Times: Directive
• The School Board directed administration to create options.
– Option creation was based on the established considerations as well as operational limitations and realities.
Options: Limitations & RealitiesTransportation
• Geography is a factor.
• Most efficient = larger high school routes first.
Options: Limitations & Realities
Transportation• Grouping pairs of elementary
schools by geography allows for transportation efficiencies.
Pair 1 = Bel Air & SunnysidePair 2 = Island Lake & Turtle LakePair 3 = Pinewood & Valentine Hills
Options: Limitations & Realities
Non-public schools• Mounds View Public Schools provides
transportation services to non-public schools: Calvin Christian, St. John’s, and St. Odilia.
• Services for the non-public schools will be coordinated through conversations with the leadership at those schools.
Options: Limitations & RealitiesStudent Connectedness
Opportunities
• Top theme: concern for after-school activities for middle and high school students.
• No secondary schools were placed in the latest tier.
Options: Limitations & Realities
Financial sustainability• We considered options that moved
only high school start times. Those scenarios were cost prohibitive.
• All options presented will be financially sustainable and equal in cost.
Options: Flexibility
• Shifting any tier time earlier or later is possible.
• It would require an equal shift for the other 2 tiers.
