program overview:

In the GBIC Singapore Program, the students embark on an experiential learning journey in Singapore – a global hub for finance, trade, innovati-on and technology, which exhibits a unique mix of cultural influences from China, Malaysia and India. In this fascinating city-state, our participants gain a better understanding of the local start-up ecosystem and meet some of its important players. Besides visiting large Southeast Asian companies, an accelerator and government body, our students become short-term entrepreneurial consultants for local fintech and technology start-ups that provide real challenges to be solved. Two certified professio-nal trainers from People & Friends (Andreas and Janina) offer some guidance and support for the student teams when working on their "Start-up Consulting Challenge" projects.

the “ Start-up Consulting Challenge“ projects explained:

Our group visits each of the start-ups on the first two days of the program in order for the students to gather as much project-relevant information as possible. In 4 highly interactive workshops given by Andreas and Janina, the students subsequently get introduced to a framework that is composed of various state-of-the-art entrepreneurial tools and methods, such as Systems Thinking and the Business Model Canvas. Our participants will thereby learn how to generate value-driven as well as customer-centric solutions. On the last day of the program, each team presents its project results to a jury in form of a pitch and the winner takes home a fantastic prize. Moreover, each morning during the debrief breakfasts, the students get some time to reflect upon their new experiences.

In order to keep everyone energized and let the students absorb the local culture, we will visit some of Singaporeʼs main sights, such as Gardens by the Bay and go on a unique night safari adventure. Our participants will also be able to enjoy a variety of local delicacies, e.g. at the Asian fusion restaurants during our Welcome and Farewell Dinners.

Day 1 - Monday

8:30AM: All participants gather in one of the hotelʼs conference rooms for an in-country orientation session and a “Team Building“ workshop. After discussing some important aspects of this trip and giving an overview of this weekʼs agenda, Andreas and Janina explain the "Start-up Consulting Challenge" projects more in detail. Subsequently, they divide the students into small teams and let everyone engage in a few team building activities. Once the teams have received their respective "Start-up Consulting Challenge" projects, Andreas and Janina lead a project-specific Q&A session, which concludes the workshop.

The morning continues with the first start-up visit at nugit – a data storytelling platform that helps enterprises and technology companies to turn data into into stories, giving the changing world of the digital era a more human perspective. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on the start-up to prepare everyone for the visit. Upon arrival, a nugit manager welcomes our group, holds a presentation about the start-upʼs most recent activities and addresses the challenge they have provided. During the subsequent Q&A session, the respective student teams who were assigned the nugit challenge are invited to take advantage of this meeting to obtain helpful information regarding their project.

In preparation for this program, the students will be divided into 5-6 teams (which may be different from their "Start-up Consulting Challenge" project teams) and do research on a company, start-up or important cultural/historical/political site to be visited and prepare a 10-minute presentation. These presentations are given during the bus rides to each destination on our itinerary in order to prepare the group as a whole.

Gardens by the BayThis is a chance to visit Singaporeʼs most famous nature park, which is home to three waterfront gardens and the world's largest glass greenhouses (Flower Dome and Cloud Forest). Take a stroll through the Supertree Grove, home to the famous 16-story man-made trees, experience the Flower Domeʼs Mediterranean-like climate for succulents and baobabs and enter the Cloud Forest to see the world's tallest indoor waterfall falling from a 115-feet mountain of lush vegetation. In addition, you will be able to take in spectacular views of Marina Bay when crossing the OCBC Skyway that connects the Supertrees.

Chinatown Culture & Food Tour Singaporeʼs Chinatown provides a lens into the cityʼs long history and vibrant present. Our tour guide will take our group to visit traditional craft shops, step into a Hindu and Buddhist temple and let us sample traditional foods as we walk through a wet market, all while learning about the neighborhoodʼs founding by Chinese immigrants. This walking tour covers top Chinatown attractions such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and will shed some light onto the neighborhood's history, which began as a small immigrant community and today represents a Singapore cultural hub.

Night Safari Experience a multi-sensory nighttime wildlife adventure during the Night Safari at the Singapore zoo – the world's first nocturnal park. Our participants get some free time to explore the park by themselves: they can, for instance, take an exciting tram ride through 7 geographical regions or opt for a walking trail for an even deeper journey into the park to see even more animals not visible from the tram journey. Besides observing leopards, the Malayan flying foxes and giant flying squirrels, they can enjoy the interactive "Creatures of the Night Show" where they can learn more about the natural abilities of fascinating nocturnal animals.

#orientation

Prior to the program start date, we provide a digital ʻWelcome Info Package ,̓ which is distributed to all participants in an orientation session held at the university. This package includes a set of experiential learning debrief questions, which the students can expect to be asked during breakfast starting on day 2 of the program. In addition, the package provides the participants with important information e.g. different options of how to get to the hotel from Changi Airport Singapore (SIN), packing tips, information about travel documents needed as well as the official start and end dates of the program.

Arrival Day

The students and faculty members arrive at different times and make their way from Changi Airport Singapore (SIN) to the selected hotel individually. They receive detailed directions on how to get to the hotel in our ʻWelcome Info Packageʼ, which is e-mailed to all participants in time for their orientation session at Pepperdine prior to their departure. Please note: everyone should arrive at 4PM at the latest in order to make it to the official welcome dinner at 7:30PM.

After enjoying lunch at Food Republic @ Capitol Piazza, our participants hop onto our private VIP bus to head over to our next visit at CoinPip – a fintech start-up that helps businesses send payments and payouts to remote workers using blockchain technology. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on the start-up to prepare everyone for the visit. Upon arrival, a CoinPip manager welcomes our group, holds a presentation about the start-upʼs most recent activities and addresses their challenge. During the subsequent Q&A session, the respective student teams who were assigned the CoinPip challenge are invited to take advantage of this meeting to obtain helpful information regarding their project.

In the afternoon, it is time for the first cultural activity: a visit to Gardens by the Bay – a magnificent nature park that consists of three waterfront gardens. Some of its highlights our participants can enjoy there include the OCBC Skyway that connects the man-made Supertrees and the world's largest glass greenhouses called Flower Dome and Cloud Forest.

The day ends at around 6PM giving the students some free time to explore Singapore on their own. Suggestions on things to do and where to grab dinner are given by Andreas and Janina on our way back to the hotel. In addition, a reminder is given to the students to prepare for next morningʼs breakfast debrief session using, for instance, the guiding questions from the ʻWelcome Info Packageʻ.

Day 2 - Tuesday

8-9AM: The day begins with an experiential learning breakfast debrief session led by Andreas and Janina and/or the accompanying faculty members to let the students share their experiences and reflect upon the things they have learned so far.

9:15AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel by our private VIP bus and are transferred to our next visit at ViSenze – a start-up that develops advanced visual search and image recognition solutions to help businesses in eCommerce, mCommerce and online advertising. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on the start-up to prepare everyone for the visit. Upon arrival, a ViSenze manager welcomes our group, holds a presentation about the start-upʼs most recent activities and addresses the challenge they have provided. During the subsequent Q&A session, the respective student teams who were assigned the ViSenze challenge are invited to take advantage of this meeting to obtain helpful information regarding their project.

After this visit, everyone is taken to Pepper Lunch Express to choose from the variety of lunch options available to get some rest and re-energize.

In the afternoon, our group is transferred to found8 (a network of innovation co-working spaces that also offers meetings spaces) for our next workshop, in which Andreas and Janina introduce the student teams to the “Design and Systems Thinking“ methods. First, the teams are introduced to parts of the Design Thinking method (steps 1-3) and Systems Thinking, also called Visual Thinking. Design Thinking allows each team to use their creativity and come up with user-centric solutions for their product or service ideas, which they will eventually pitch to a jury on Friday.

Systems Thinking is an approach which lets you visualize ideas, communicate and solve complex problems more collaboratively and effectively. After getting to know both methods, each student team chooses the one that fits better with their respective challenge at hand. Andreas and Janina help each team to then translate their learnings to their own projects.

Subsequently, our participants are transferred to visit Singtel (Singapore Telecommunications Limited) – Asiaʼs leading communications group and the largest mobile network operator in Singapore. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on the company to prepare everyone for the visit. Upon arrival, a Singtel manager gives our group a tour of the company office space and holds a presentation about the company history as well as its current activities in the Asian markets. A Q&A session for the students concludes this company visit.

The day ends at around 6PM with some more free time for the students to enjoy Singapore. Suggestions on things to do and where to grab dinner are given by Andreas and Janina on our way back to the hotel.

Day 3 - Wednesday

9-10:30AM: Another round of experiential learning breakfast debrief sessions is led by Andreas and Janina and/or the accompanying faculty members to let the students share their experiences and reflect upon the things they have learned so far.

10:45AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel by our private VIP bus and are transferred to the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX) – an investment holding company that provides different services related to securities and derivatives trading. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on SGX to the rest of the group. Upon arrival, a manager holds a presentation on the exchangeʼs activities as well as its role in the Asian hemisphere and our visit ends with some time for Q&A.

After an enjoyable lunch at NTUC Foodfare, we head over to visit United Overseas Bank (UOB) – a Singaporean multinational banking organization that covers retail, corporate and private banking, insurance services as well as venture capital. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on UOB to the rest of the group. Upon arrival, a manager holds a presentation on the companyʼs activities paying particular attention to UOBʼs active involvement in the local start-up ecosystem. A Q&A session concludes this visit.

In the afternoon, all participants gather in a meeting room at LEVEL3 – a unique co-working and events space connected to Unileverʼs regional headquarters. There, Andreas and Janina give their “Business Model Canvas“ workshop in which the teams revisit their Design and Systems Thinking results from the day before and get an introduction to the Business Model Canvas (BMC). With this tool, each student team engages in an iterative process, in which they transfer their results and ideas into different business models. Afterwards, all student teams evaluate which parts of the BMC are most relevant for their respective projects and start to think about how they can use the model to present their final results during the pitching competition on Friday

Subsequently, everyone is returned to the hotel to get some rest, change into more comfortable clothing and enjoy an early dinner on their own.

7:30PM: Our participants are picked up at the hotel and transferred to the Singapore zoo to experience a Night Safari. The students can choose whether they wish to explore the nocturnal park by hopping onto the multi-sensory tram ride or go on a walking night safari to have an even closer encounter with the animals. On our way to the Singapore zoo, one student team presents some background information on the Night Safari to the rest of the group.

10:15PM: Andreas and Janina wait at the Singapore zoo entrance and accompany those who wish to leave back to the hotel.

Day 4 - Thursday

8-9:30AM: Round 3 of experiential learning breakfast debrief sessions

9:45AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel by our private VIP bus and are transferred to Enterprise Singapore – a govern-ment agency that supports the growth of Singapore as a hub for global trading and start-ups, e.g. by helping committed companies to build capabilities, innovate and internationalize. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on Enterprise Singapore to the rest of the group. Upon arrival, a manager holds a presentation on the agencyʼs activities paying particular attention to their supportive measures that are directed towards start-ups. Afterwards, the students have some time to ask any questions they may have.

The morning continues with a second visit at the FinLab – a start-up accelerator that provides extensive support, e.g. in the field of digital transformation to fintech and technology companies. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on the FinLab to the rest of the group. Upon arrival, a manager holds a presentation on the acceleratorʼs activities and presents a few current start-ups that are part of their programs. The visit ends with some time for Q&A.

For lunch, everyone is taken to Food Junction foodcourt, which is close to our next meeting space at the co-working space the hive.

Upon arrival at the hive, Andreas and Janina give a workshop on the “Golden Circle“. With this model, the students learn a pitching technique, which helps them to not only deliver facts and figures but also to focus on their ideaʼs unique selling propositions and purpose. This workshop session also serves as preparation time for the students to rehearse their pitches for the next day and for everyone to determine the order in which each team will deliver their pitch. After going over the juryʼs evaluation criteria, the students gets a chance to practice pitching and receive feedback from Andreas, Janina, the faculty members and the other teams.

In the late afternoon, everyone is transferred to the starting point of a special walking tour to experience the culture and taste the food of Singaporeʼs Chinatown. On our way there, one student team presents some background information on Chinatown to the rest of the group. Besides visiting sights, such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (a gigantic 4-story temple that was completed only in 2007) and learning about the neighborhoodʼs founding by Chinese immigrants, our participants will get to try some traditional local delicacies at the wet market.

The day ends at around 6PM giving the students more free time. Suggestions on things to do and where to grab dinner are given by Andreas and Janina on our way back to the hotel. Additionally, a reminder is given to all student teams to send their final presentations for the pitching competition to People & Friends by 10PM at the latest.

Day 5 - Friday

9-10:30AM: Round 4 of experiential learning breakfast debrief sessions

10:45AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel by our private VIP bus and are transferred to the FinLab once again. There, it is time for the pitching competition as the grand finale of the studentsʼ work. Before listening to the first pitch, Andreas and Janina introduce the jury members (the start-ups as the challenge givers as well as local business professionals) and explain the agenda of the competition. Each student team then gets a challenging 3 minutes in order to present their "Start-up Consulting Challenge" project results to the jury. The pitching competition ends with a short celebration during which the winning team receives its prize.

Once the jury is dismissed, a final debrief session and evaluation of the entire program is carried out by Andreas and Janina as well as the faculty members.

After lunch at one of the Let's eat! foodcourts, our group is returned to the hotel and the students have lots of free time to enjoy their last day in Singapore.

7PM: Everyone gathers in the hotel lobby to be transferred to the official Farewell Dinner at picnic restaurant. Our exciting journey ends with a multi-cuisine communal dining experience in an idyllic garden setting. The day ends at around 9:30PM.
