Start-ups: Together for Innovation

These start-ups are fast, innovative and solution-driven. In the upcoming weeks we will present start-ups out

of these hubs that provide innovative solutions in times of Corona.

Twelve Digital Hubs spread all over Germany build a strong network under the roof of the Digital Hub Initiative. In

each hub, start-ups, corporates and academia come together in order to find answers to the latest economic chances

and challenges.

How Start-ups Can Help Germany’s Mittelstand Beat the Crisis

How has Germany's SME sector reacted to the Corona crisis? Which SMEs have found good answers? What po

tential is untapped and why is cooperation with start-ups so promising?

Germany's world-renowned "Mittelstand" of small and medium-sized enterprises constitutes

more than 93 percent of all German

companies, employing over 60 percent of the workforce.

Coronavirus leading to new business models

Corona has led to companies worldwide having to adapt their business models within a short time. Small and medium-

sized enterprise demand for digitalization in particular has developed a new dynamic. The best example here has been

the relocation of many workplaces to the home office. Many companies have recognized the opportunities of working

from home as a result of the crisis.

The problem that has existed for years among SMEs of recruiting suitable skilled workers from urban centers for their

locations in the provinces has been partly solved by the creation of virtual jobs. Homeworking as a normal case, to

gether with the necessary technical equipment, will allow SMEs to attract qualified specialists from the big cities in

the future.

The supposed locational disadvantage of the provinces thereby becomes a locational advan-

tage.

In manufacturing, the shift to the home office only works to a limited extent. Nevertheless, individual steps in value-

added chains can be digitalized and release new potential of employees who can be deployed in other areas.

Digitalization in SMEs

However, a KfW study shows that there are sometimes considerable differences in the funding of digitalization in

SMEs: The smaller the company, the higher the level of internal funding for service projects. Uncertainty about suc

cess, difficulties in evaluating such projects and lack of collateral unusually stand in the way of external financing

through bank loans. A rethinking within the financial sector, as well as government support programs, is also con

tributing to an acceleration of the digitalization transformation process in the Mittelstand sector.

Innovative SME landscape

The Coronavirus crisis also shows that innovations in particular provide a good basis for medium-sized companies to

cope with the new demands. The innovation potential of German SMEs has also revealed a lot in this respect. Accord

ing to KfW, 43 percent of SMEs have made adjustments to their range of products and services, with the heavily af

fected trade sector being the trailblazer in this respect.

KfW also emphasizes that coronavirus-related adjustments have particularly been made by those companies who

have already produced innovations in the past. The ability to develop and successfully implement innovations allows

companies to respond to crisis situations at short notice, thereby increasing their resilience in times of crisis. Here too,

German SMES are structurally well positioned. The smaller the structures, the faster the ability to react on the one

hand, and the structural orientation of business models on the other.

This means that SMEs have small structures and process flows that allow new tasks, sales channels

and products to be correspondingly adapted quickly.

SME business models typically pursue long-term goals, whereas listed companies normally have a short-term business

orientation with the goal of scaling up new ventures as quickly as possible. Germany’s Mittelstand acts in terms of

generations and can also contribute significantly to the sustainable development of the economy and Germany as a

business location.

Start-ups – What do they offer the SME sector?

What role can start-ups play in this process of transformation within the German SME sector? And just how do the

strengths of start-ups and SMEs complement each other? And what challenges need to be overcome here? Start-ups

have much of what many companies have had to work hard to achieve during the crisis. For example, many start-up

Digital Hub Initiative

In Germany, the Digital Hub Initiative, with its 12 hub locations, provides start-ups with a network made up

of co-working offers, accelerator programs, and support for internationalization projects. It’s not just the

workplace, but the digital business models of start-ups offer significant innovation potential for German

SMEs in particular. Start-ups are typically solution oriented and develop customer-friendly digital applica

tions. Small and medium-sized enterprises can, for example, use these offers to optimize work processes or

digitalize parts of the value chain. They can therefore integrate innovations into their companies without

having to provide internal resources for this development.

employees have worked regularly from home prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Co-working spaces are part of the lived,

everyday routine.

SMEs – What do they offer the start-up sector?

What can SMEs offer start-ups? On the one hand, this is usually long-term business relationships and customers at

home and abroad. Germany is the export world champion, with many SMEs playing a vital part. This means that, even

in the process of internationalizing start-up business models, SMEs can usually offer many years of export experience

and access to existing networks and sales structures. Many start-ups, in turn, have an international workforce - this is

of benefit to SMEs in their internationalization process.

Covid-19 pandemic accelerating cooperation

The process of cooperation between SMEs and start-ups has been significantly accelerated and, at the same time con

firmed, by the Coronavirus crisis.

The corporate cultures of SMEs and start-ups are different, so it is time for both sides to realize that they can only win together by overcoming these

"intercultural" differences.

Germany as a business location has every chance of successfully overcoming the current crisis and working towards a

sustainable future. The trend of trying new things and taking alternative paths has become a necessary virtue because

of the Covid-19 pandemic.

de:hub Journey

The de:hub journey [German only] of the Digital Hub Initiative shows how. “Innovation in Intral

ogistics: Tapping the Joint Potential of Digital Journeys, Processes and Business Models” is the theme of the

de:hub journey which will take place September 24-25, taking in the three hub locations of Dortmund,

Hamburg and Dresden. The de:hub journey is a journey for SME owners and decision makers to jointly iden

tify the potential of digital technologies, processes and business models and make them available for their

own companies. During the journey, participants gain invaluable insight into the work of digital hubs, visit

test labs and co-working spaces. They will also get to know start-ups and potential cooperation partners.

The de:hub journey is aimed at companies that derived part of their added value from efficient and innova

tive warehouse logistics.

Growth in Times of Crisis

Germany proves a reliable location for start-ups amidst the corona pandemic.

Corona crisis affecting Germany's start-ups

The coronavirus crisis has changed the German start-up landscape: Nine out of ten companies have been affected eco

nomically, and over 70 percent fear for their existence - these are the results of a study by the German Startups Asso

ciation. It found that the crisis is already impacting the entire breadth of the German start-up ecosystem, especially

the human resources and tourism segments.

The study also shows start-ups being affected no matter what phase they are in. Smaller companies suffer from the

lack of customer contact due to cancelled trade fairs and events, while large start-ups with many employees are pri

marily concerned about sales, liquidity and future financing. The global market has always filtered out weaker start-

ups - a process that will intensify because of the crisis. One result, however, will be less competition. Technology start-

ups able to complete financing rounds in this environment will have an advantage.

Governmental support measures: two pillar concept

The federal government is trying to ease the situation with a package of more than two billion euros aimed specifical

ly at German start-ups. The initiative was announced on April 1, 2020, and over the past few weeks, the German Min

istry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Ministry of Finance have worked out the details together with

the KfW Banking Group and KfW Capital. "Covid 19 must not be allowed to slow the growth of our highly innovative

companies," said Thomas Jarzombek, the BMWi’s point man on the digital economy and start-ups. “That is why we

have worked hard to ensure that the two-billion-euro package of measures is ready and can now be accessed by

start-ups and small and medium-sized companies. This is how we secure jobs and innovation in Germany."

The package of measures is based on two so-called pillars: In Pillar 1, called the “Corona Matching Facility,” the govern

ment provides additional monies to venture capital funds so that investors can finance highly innovative and future-

oriented start-ups despite the crisis. The idea is to protect young companies’ growth during their development phases.

The Corona Matching Facility uses existing cooperation with public partners such as KfW Capital and the European In

vestment Fund to quickly make public support available to start-ups via venture capital funds.

Pillar 2 is aimed at start-ups and small and medium-sized companies without access to the corona matching facility. It

opens up further ways of securing financing. To this end, there will be close cooperation with Germany’s 16 regional

states, particularly via their investment authorities.

Taking advantage of accelerator programs

The and its network have also adapted many existing structures. Enabling start-ups, for example,

to participate in accelerator programs like the top-ranked  - the HHL Accelerator in Leipzig. Within six

weeks, the accelerator team went over to a digital format. That allows eight innovative teams to continue to work on

energy, smart infrastructure and e-health topics in the coming semester. During the six-months program, startups re

ceive help from a broad network of partners, investors, mentors and coaches in order to set up successful cooperation

projects. The aim is to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in start-up funding in Leipzig and beyond.

Stability in start-up location Germany

These various measures illustrate Germany’s reliability as an international start-up location. Conversely, start-ups rep

resent a core strength of Germany’s future-oriented and competitive economy.

The Corona crisis has had differing impacts on various parts of Germany’s start-up landscape: Whereas travel and mo

bility start-ups have suffered sharp drops in sales, business software developers have thus far only experienced slow

er growth. Other segments such as collaboration tools or e-health even have good prospects of emerging from the cri

sis stronger. During the crisis, digital business models have proven remarkably robust.

The German start-up ecosystem will not disappear – that much is already evident. Compared with other actors in the

economy, entrepreneurs and investors will be empowered and emerge from the crisis more quickly. The hope is that

young tech companies will become even more central to the overall economy because they are more engaged in inno

vation and change and more adaptable than other sectors of the economy.

established companies that explore innovations outside of the company’s day-to-day business. Founders,

companies, and the scientific community work together from the idea to the scale-up. In this way, innova
