STARTING AUTOCAD2006

From the Start Menu select Programs. Then select AutoCAD2006 from

the menu. Or you can double click AutoCAD icon from the desktop.

When you start AutoCAD the startup dialog box is displayed.

The startup dialog box provides you with three ways to create a new

drawing:

-  Create a new drawing from scratch.

-  Create a new drawing using a template.

-  Create a new drawing using a wizard.

-  Start from scratch: allows you to start a new drawing based on the

measuremnet of your choice.

  Imperial (feet and inches)

  Metric

-  Start from a template: allows you to start a new drawing based on

a template file you select from an existing list of templates.

-  Start from a wizard: allows you to start a new drawing based on a

Quick Setup Wizard or the Advanced Setup Wizard.

OPENING AN EXISTING DRAWINGTo open an existing drawing:

-  Select the Open drawing tab from AutoCAD standard tool bar

-  From the select file dialog box, select the file you want to open and

choose open.

Features of AutoCAD 2006 window

1-  Drawing area: This part of AutoCAD window display your drawing

and it is where drawing and editing activities take place. You can

create 2 and 3 dimensional drawings in the drawing area.

2-  Command window: The command line is located at the bottom of

the screen, between the drawing area and the status bar. It

displays prompts and messages. It is a good practice to monitor

the activity that occurs in the command window.

At each stage of the command, AutoCAD will either provide you

with a series of options to choose from or require that you input

values revelant to that particular stage of the command.

Always press ENTER after you input values on the command

window.

3-  Toolbars: Each tool bar consists of a collection of tools that

perform rlated tasks. You operate each tool by clicking on the icon

bottom. The icons indicate their purpose. 

The default toolbars are shown bellow:

4-  Menu Bar: You access menus from the menu bar located at the top

of AutoCAD window.

Commands on the menu that are shaded are not available at that

point in the drawing session.

5-  Status Bar: The status bar is located at the bottom of AutoCAD

window and it consists of the followings items:

- Coordinate readout area.

-  Drafting Setting

6-  Standard Toolbar: It contains Microsoft Office commands such

as New (new file), Open (opening an existing drawing), Print,

Redraw, Zoom, Undo etc. Each icon contains a flyout which

describe its purpose.

7-  Object Properties Toolbar: It allows you to set the properties of

each object such as colors, Linetype, and Layers.

8-  Mouse: AUtoCAD commands from the menus and toolbars can be

picked by clicking them using the mouse. The mouse can be used to

draw or to select objects on the drawing area (screen). With two

buttom mouse, the left buttom is a pick buttom used to specify

points on the screen. The right button displays a shortcut menu or

it can be used as Enter key.

Saving DrawingsWhen you start drawing with AutoCAD, it is good idea to save your work

frequently as you work on it.

You can save it under its original name ( choose file ten Save) or under a

different name ( choose file then Save As).

You can save your drawing using a save dialog box.

In the dialog box under File Name, enter the name of the drawing,

then click the Save buttom.

Creating New Drawings

The NEW Command

To activate the command New use one of the following methods:

-  Click New on the file menu, or

-  Click the New Icon on the standard toolbar, or

-  Enter New at the command line.

The Create New Drawing dialog box is displayed on the screen

Choose the units setting for your drawing, imperial or metric, and

start drawing.
