GROUP DISCUSSION

If you only had 30 seconds to describe Christianity to someone, what would you be sure to include? Why?

The Bible says, “Salvation is found in no one else [other than Jesus], for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” [Acts 4:12] Why is that hard for non-Christians to accept? Why might it even be hard for Christians to accept? How is affirming this actually good news?

The Bible contains 66 writings [books], written over a span of 1,500 years, all in agreement as they point to Jesus. There is no other document like it. Why is the reliability of the Bible as God’s Word so important to establish before talking about anything else?

The Sacraments [Baptism & Communion] are given to provide confidence of God’s love and forgiveness for us. Why do you think God would be concerned that we have this confidence? Where have you personally been challenged in this confidence?

Which is more important in baptism, the commitment God is making to the person, or the commitment the person is making to God?

wonderful about being baptized into Christ’s death? Into his resurrection?

Why might people struggle with baptizing babies? For whom is it “easier” to receive the gifts of baptism, a child or an adult? How does it help knowing baptism is primarily a gift God gives, not an act of our obedience?

Acts 2:38-39 says, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” What two significant gifts of baptism are listed here? What is the impact of each gift?

Why do you think God used water as a means of grace? What about its qualities, its availability, its use, etc. make it a great tool for unleashing God’s power in our lives?

AT-HOME WORK Read through Luther’s Small Catechism pp. 47-53, 202-216. If you are baptized, find out when and where it happened. If you are not

baptized, talk to one of our pastors about receiving this great gift. Begin each day claiming the gifts of your baptism, applying the forgiveness

to your daily battle with sin and calling on the Holy Spirit to be awakened in you.
