2017wasamoreeventfulyearinretailthanmanyprobablyexpected.Thisweekandnext,wewillreviewtheyear,andconsiderwhatitsdevelopmentstellusaboutthestateofthesectorandthestrategiesretailersareadoptingtowin(ormaybejustsurvive).Inthisweek’snote,welookatmergers,acquisitionsandinvestments;nextweek,wewillreviewcollaborations.

LegacyretailersinvestinInternetbrands:WalmartboughtastringofInternet-focusedapparelbrandsandretailersthisyear:ShoeBuyinJanuary,MoosejawinFebruary,ModClothinMarchandBonobosinJune.InMay,Targetinvestedanunconfirmed$75millionindirect-to-consumermattressbrandCasper,accordingtotechnologynewswebsiteRecode,andTargetstartedsellingCasperproductsinitsstores.GroceryretailerAlbertsonsacquiredmeal-kitfirmPlatedforanundisclosedsuminSeptember.
