STATE OF DRONE REPORT 2018 PG EXECUTIVE SUMMARY01
EXECUTIVESUMMARY
METHODOLOGY
Figures released by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) in December 2017, points to an increasingly sophisticated and regulated industry.
In such a rapidly evolving and growing sector of the economy, adherence and implementation of firm guidelines, safety standards, and compliance will result in growth and a business advantage for the South African drone industry to compete in this developing and under-regulated sphere of the global economy.
Currently, there are 663 Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) registered in South Africa, which tallies with the growing number of Remote Pilot Licences (RPLs) issued of 686. This growth correlates with figures released in February 2017 of
368 RPLs and 468 RPAs, providing further proof that the drone community has come to terms with South Africa's leading RPAS legal framework.
In comparison to the explosive growth seen in RPLs and registered RPAS, the number of approved operators, or ROCs, and training centres remains low with 20 ROCs and four training centres approved. For an industry still in its infancy, these numbers are likely to increase due to the factors of growing market demand and as expertise filters throughout the industry, within the regulatory, operator and training environment.
An analysis was completed on the database provided by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, which contains a list of all drone registrations completed during the period of July 2015 to April 2017.
This database includes the following information:

In particular, the mining industry’s maturity and general reliance on traditional operating methods have been shaken up by the arrival of more data-accurate drone technology. Rocketmine was born of a passion to fill this service gap and ensure that this critical industry remains relevant and ahead of the curve through the safe, accurate and ecient delivery of data.
As with other areas of technological development, the drone industry continues to witness extensive and fast-moving global innovation with new hardware, software and service companies entering the market on an almost daily basis. Consolidation of various areas within the industry continue to develop as expected, with dominant players emerging in both hardware development as well as niche applications, such as mining.
The Chinese continue to dominate the DJI multi-rotor market while the fixed-wing drone market opportunities remain largely competitive. Yet unexplored opportunities also remain in service areas such as forestry and agriculture.
This is the best time to be part of the shift in the drone industry as legislative requirements get tighter and standards of operating improve through the governing authority for unmanned aerial systems.
As with any new industry or technology penetrating an existing and mature market, there are lots of challenges to come. Firstly, a large amount of capital is used to start a regulated and licensed operation. Thus, it is critical to demonstrate that a business can remain profitable within an ever-changing technological landscape; spending money where it counts while maintaining high levels of safety and compliance.
Secondly, marrying old-school aviation and mining practices with new technology calls for an innovative and customised business solution. Rocketmine dedicates time and energy to illustrate the huge benefits of accurate and ecient data production, always through the prism of addressing the client’s primary needs.
Thirdly, compliance with the regulations governing both the aviation and mining industries is a non-negotiable qualifier into the playing field. The challenge remains to adapt and accommodate to these ever-changing but critical guidelines to remain relevant, safe and productive.
The challenges we are and will be faced with, continue to hone our focus on customer service and the solutions that count. The ability to embrace change and find cost-eective, innovative answers to critical gaps in the market will ensure success and growth through 2018 and beyond.

ACCUMULATED REGISTRATION TREND
The industry, as a whole, has seen positive, sustainable registration growth over the past seven quarters – 61% per quarter (or 45% quarter-on-quarter growth).
This is exceptionally high growth, especially compared to South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth over the past seven quarters (which was virtually flat).
Although survey, mapping, inspection focused operators have the highest percentage of drones, the training, film and marketing operators are the fastest growing segments of the drone industry.

Survey, mapping and inspection have been on a positive registration growth trajectory during the period under review.
Growth within the training sector plateaued during the second quarter of 2016 to the first quarter of 2017, with a noticed decline during the second quarter of 2017.
The rapid growth evident in film & marketing applications initially indicated that this would become the dominant sector of the industry overtaking surveys and inspections, however after its growth stabilised, its trajectory is similar to the fluctuations experienced by the training sector.
