Match Report;

Queensland take Game One thriller!---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Brisbane,QLD- Queensland were determined to restore home pride after losing the last two Origin Games on home soil at Suncorp Stadium. As usual however they went into the match heavy under dogs and most of the question marks surrounded Quarterback Chris Ahearn who had failed to live up to expectations in last years series.

"It was great to win first up" said Ahearn. "We really wanted to make a statement here at home and I think we did that. They (NSW) now know that this year it's a real contest and we are up to the task". Queensland's victory was built on an incredible start. A lot of the talk before the game was about young slot receiver Joey Clarke. 'SPeedy' Clarke as he is known jumped out of the gates and from the fisrt play from scrimmage took a crossing pattern over the middle for 27 yards. This helped set up a very good opening drive that only floundered when Jason Brennan recorded NSW's only sack of the game. Queensland kicked three to get on the board.

The opening pace was fast and furious and NSW quickly answered the QLd field goal with one of their own. But the excitment levels went up a further notch on the ensuing kick off. Steve Kelly who does not normally return kicks for his team UOW, exploded down the left and his speed carried him all the way 94 yards to pay dirt.

The game settled after this and that played more into the hands of the grafting Cockroaches. Two long drives either side of halftime were finished off by the power running of Jeremy Holmes. Holmes was not starting the game at tailback but Jeremy Andrews who speed was causing the Queenslanders issues left the game with a rib injury on only his third carry from scrimmage.

With NSW now restored in the lead many felt Queensland would just fade away. But fade they did not. Ahearn was confounding his critics and in a flawless display he kept the pressure on. A 14 play drive set up a 30 yard field goal to Jahnayah Crowley. But it was Clarkes night to shine. All game it was a real tactical battle between the teams as Queensland operated out of a 3 wide, single set back formation. NSW countered with either a 335 or a normal 34. Clarkes speed was the breaking point and when he escaped down the left flank AHearn hit him in stride and he was gone. 80 yards for the game winner. The Queensland fans were in raptures and New South Wales were stunned. "We did not prepare well enough" said last years Mason medallist Luke Asotasi. "I am not talking about the Coaches nor the game plan. I am talking about us the players. We took too long to get up to speed. We need to to punish from the get go ion Game Two".
